Greetings,

O.K., so we cleaned out the parents garage 2 years ago. Just got around to opening a few and found boxes of pristine issues of BMX news, AZ. BMX news and the bullsheet among others. These have got me remembering names and places that was long forgotten(or so I thought).
I found an AZ. post from a year or two ago and was amazed that some of the BMX racers from AZ/SoCal scene in the 70's are cruising this site. Thanks for the recommendation Cheez.
As I used to publish a BMX newsletter every week for a couple of years, I have almost EVERY race result from the PHX. area from mid '76 to mid '78 as well as much of the SoCal published stories and results.

If there is enough interest in this post.......I'll add images as much as is practical.

Yes, that's the way I remember it too. The publishers name was Kris Bartlett ("mothers custom" team sponser). She often collaborated with Bill Bear (Johns' dad) and Bob Jackson (of reservation raceway fame) to promote the NBA in AZ.

Come on Az. Old School! I've got stuff on: Bear, Beach,Catchings,Timmsen,Kase Bros,Battle Bros.,T-Bell, "Meat", Young, you name em!

Green machine, kinda the Z-boys of the AZ BMX scene.

Roger White (13sr State fair race) We both went to Alhambra. He raced a Webco Ultimate for Landis on Indian School and 47th I dated his sister for a couple years. I DNFed in that 13sr main.

LOL Ladmo wins the celebrity race (Wallace and Ladmo show, PHX thing). surprised he could go that fast the dude was tall. Would have thought a little guy like Pat McMahon would have smoked them
toothtwister
Roger White, I remember him well. I thought he rode a Suzuki for the longest time. Man, that was a rare bike then. Can't imagine now. I may have a pic around here somewhere of him. we rode in the same class most of the year.

Felicia Stanard, Rogers' sister.........youz a playa
cheez
So you knew the Stanards then? Felicia and I met in 84 were gonna get married in 85 but it never happened, oh well. Her Brother (blonde one with roid rage) had what could have been a bad azz 66 Mustang but I don't think he ever got it running. I had a yellow 72 Merc Comet with a well built 351C 4v/Top loader/9" at the time and used to give him allot of crap about putting his car were his mouth was. My comet was running 11.OHs. In the early 80's that was damn fast for a daily driver street car

I went steady with Sharon, Rogers Sister from my Sr year to one year past. Rogers Dad had a sand rail and I used to go the Glamis and Butter Cup with them.

Playa, no not me, more of the serious relationship kinda guy, even then
toothtwister
been out of town. More stuff soon. Anyone have the AZ-1 district 1 final totals for '78?

O.K.,...here's a reach: I remember a DG BMX cataloge with Stu, Skibel, Bottema all jumping on the cover. Anybody have an image of that ?
CharleyGnarlyP290
That is a really great find. I am hoping someday someone will find a stash of '80 thru '87 ABA results. I am working on a project and really want some info from those years.
toothtwister
Hey Cheez....you ever drive that Comet to GCC ? I saw a buddy at the reunion that was totally into the street scene in the 70's/80's. He remembered a yellow comet that would cruise through GCC occasionally.

Yeah I went to GCC. There was another guy who also went there that had a yellow Maverick w/Cragars and a scoop. We belonged to the same car club, Central Arizona Street Machines. I think his name was Kenny, kinda of a doushe. I could never get him to run me he always had some lame excuse. Used to cruise Metro allot. I'm sure you remember doin that it was in your back yard.
toothtwister
Metrocenter....aahhhh ya, cruising, babes,beer,brawls......many memorable "wasted" weekends........wouldn't trade it for a thing!

As I go through these boxes, I have to say, for only having 10% of the rider base as Cal., AZ put out some damn good talent!

Image (1) 1976 "Kawasaki Grand Nationals" at the one and only Saddleback Park. We all got are butts handed to us big time.....but never again! My sister still has that Kawasaki plate with the image of Dave Clinton for winning. Does Reilly still have Clintons bike?

I'll be in town for Thanksgiving was thinking of hittin Black Mountain for Wen. practice. Gotta check to see if they will still have it the night before TG. They did before.

Any of ya old farts up for a few laps?..........................or a few beers? drinks.gif
toothtwister
Just teasin ya Tom, everybody knows you were fast ! Laps....hmmmmmmm, Well, the reason I stopped BMX was that I nearly lost my left leg racing motocross at Beeline dragway under the lights 4 days before the whole Patterson team was coming to pick me up in AZ. and heading out for a summer tour. So.......hell ya!.................just need alot of those beers first !
cheez
Was your wreak at the 2nd burm at the end of the front straight? I remember two guys locking handlebars just before the entry and going through the fence. Some little girl who was sitting on the end of a tail gate got the worst of that one. I used race at Beeline. Remember the night it rained mud?

toothtwister
No, there was a left hand drop-turn into the "bowl" in the middle of the track. They just watered it and I didn't know. Threw it Left with the leg out and.......both ends went out under me. I was "flying" an inch off the ground and when I landed at the bottom my upper leg was trapped under the bars and the lower half came straight up. My toes(well boot toe) actually hit me in the shoulder. .....No more BMX :-(
mxmug
So an mx crash finished your bmx racing. I think Brent Patterson also got hurt racing mx. He ended up coming back to bmx if i remember correctly. Too bad you missed the summer tour.
toothtwister
Yeah, that would've been an awesome summer. It was bittersweet watching all those guys that I knew becoming "superstars". But, things happen for a reason I guess. I 've been wildly blessed in my business and personal life. In almost every business challenge I can relate it to something I learned Racing BMX, publishing the AZ. BMX news, or being part of the creation of the A.B.A.. I've actually been thinking about setting up some kind of award (scholarship or something) If the A.B.A. would have it. I don't know where that might fit in with them. I'll tell you what though, I don't think "rubberized" tracks are BMX!!! maybe I can set-up an "old school" award for the top rider whose tires actually slide on DIRT.............whaddya think

Ah yes the bowl. One night a guys throttle stuck (or he freaked) and he launched his bike right outta there into the annoucers stand/snack bar. The older guys used to call the top of that drop "the slippery nipple" Now 30+ years later I understand why

"toothtwister" I'd guess you doing something associated with dentistry?
toothtwister
Yes, I'm a Dentist.

I started Kidz Connextion Dental Centers about 9 years ago and it has been a remarkable adventure. We help low income children from all over Arizona and have been very successful doing what most Dentists won't touch with a 10 foot pole! When I started, I got alot of "funny" looks because most Dentists want to do the "glamour" work....cosmetic stuff etc. When the economy was great......I was an anomaly and had a difficult time getting other Dentists on board. Now that the economy sucks, we are looking solid as a rock and now have 7 Dentists working at 3 locations with plans to expand nationally in the next couple of years. Anyway, I've never stopped competing and have always credited some of the success to my BMX experience and have reached a point where I would like to "pay it back" to my roots if you will. Any suggestions ?

Lee

Very cool and inovative place Lee. I would have thought that maybe having it so open might create problems? Like one kid freakin out (even with all the cool stuff to look at) then that having a domino effect.

Props man you are doing good things good2.gif

Az/ So. Cal old schoolers,

Have some more pics to post and need help with rider I.D.

These are from my first( and only) pro races in '77. First one is from the '77 AZ. state fair which was NBA. I'm # 101, Kenny Nachman has the ridiculous holeshot, and I THINK # 14 is a guy named Kris Parentreau. Please confirm #14 and any help with the other rider would help. You can't see him, but Eric Rupe is behind Nachman.

http://www.bmxhosting.com/is.php?i=2490&img=IMG_2209.JPG

Second is from the very first ABA pro race in Chandler, Fall '77. The rider out front is a super fast local rider named Al Schott. Who is the Mongoose rider ?

http://www.bmxhosting.com/is.php?i=2491&img=IMG_2202.JPG

Although I did'nt place in either of these races, I held my own for being a 14 y.o.

Thanks in advance, Lee "Leroy" Harding

More stuff,

The newsletter I published for 2 years. At first "AZ. BMX News", then "Short Strokes".
Did my best to imitate Bob Haros with the artwork..........imitated yes, duplicated ...not hardly.

The Thunderbird Park track was gnarly!

Thanks for the blast from the past.
toothtwister
First ABA pro race.................Bryan Curnel ??? maybe ? anybody ??
Racer
If its 14S it may well be Kris. If its 14X its Jeff Utterback (in his Bel Ray days Im guessing)

in the second picture Im guessing it is Garrett Russell
Note you can kinda make out the first letter of the last name on the back of the jersey.
toothtwister
Hey Erick,

The #14 jersey is from "wheels & things" in San Diego which makes me think Parenteau. I've got other pics from that very first ABA pro race that show the same mongoose factory rider next to Stu. However, they're both running paper plates with drawn on numbers so ????. The hair hanging out the back looks like Curnel, but I just can't believe I wouldn't remember gating with him. He was a "biggie" then. Good to hear from you & thanks for the help.

Lee
Reilley1
That is indeed the legendary late great Gabriel "Kris" Parenteau flying the Wheels N' Things colors.
toothtwister
Thanks, Rick, I havn't forgot about the Kawasaki plaque....I'll PM you.

Im still thinking the Mongoose racer is Garret. Curnels jersye back woulda started with C and thats clearly not a C. Most dont remember Garret.

Mike,

Great to hear from you ! Man, you, Bret and the Battle brothers were a "fixture" at PXA for a couple of years mid seventies. I'm sure I've got some results/stories with you in it. I'm busier than a one-legged man in a butt-kicking contest right now, but I'll post em up ASAP.

BTW....look at page 1 "Winternationals" results......WHO DAT beating Davidow, Mingus, Clark in the 14 Ex !!!! no shame in finishing behind Utterback either....those are some big "names" !!!

Best of Everything, Lee
MKase
Lee,

Thanks for the memories, Its amazing to see those results from back then. It really made my day seeing them, Especially of me taking second behind utterback smile.gif . Cant wait to see some more when you get a chance to post some up, A great big THANK YOU for posting them.

More stuff...First race in Yuma 1977 and PXA results 1976.

I had just lost a HUGE race at Trabuco Canyon on Sat. to some guy named Greg Hill..... I was traveling with the Flemming family and Carl (Kyle's dad) was giving me the "business" The whole way from Trabuco to Yuma and I was P.O.'d. The poor S.O.B.s in Yuma got an angry thumping Sunday just so I didn't have to hear it from Carl all the way back to PHX.

Hello, I was reserching some vitage mongoose stuff and your conversation on Bryon Curnel came up, I have a 76 mongoose which I bought from a friend back in 77-78 no later he raced bmx and was sponsered he lived in Alameda county last name of Porter. His dad's name Les they were in big time hit all the races anyway I got the frame fr him he told me he had a friend that had one he told me the story that someone raced it' been so long ago the story I really can't remember evrything that he said, and so when I was looking up the serial #'s above the "C H 6" was stamped 05 BRY being the second owner could this possibly be a team riders frame I spoke with vintage mongoose, and I was told in fact sme did do that if any one knows stuff in this area I would love to hear it thank you.
toothtwister
Interesting,
I don't know anything about the mongoose stamping (there is a Mongoose serial # thread). However, that would be very cool if you could link that to a "factory" sponsored frame. Nice frame either way....best of luck.
