Hey guys i hope you can give me some advice. I came across this Hutch Trick Star Delivering pizza and had to have it. I have never restored a bike before have always restored cars and need some help. I think it is all original, that is what the previous owner told me as he was the original owner. My questions is, it only has the back wheel so I came across a set of ACS wheels that i want to put on it if it want kill the value of the bike or should i look for a original skyway mag for the front? It needs to be rechromed but i don't want to rechrome the frame is it is worth more original. I know some cars are worth more original then others. I have provided two pics I can take more if you guys want to see more. I got the bike for free and didn't know what i had until I found this site.

Nice find, especially for free!

An Oxalic Acid bath might clean that up for you...look for the thread on it in the Tech section of this site. As for the value, Trick Stars aren't exactly rare but still seem to fetch decent prices whether original or redone. It's really up to you. If it were mine and the chrome was pretty shot---big pitting, sections bare, etc---I'd get it powdered.

As the wheels are concerned: Trick Stars were sold as a frame and fork set as well as complete, so really, you could put anything from the era on there. Z-rims, Arayas, Tuffs...

The bars are definitely Hutch (and worth a bit themselves) but the stem looks like a Tuf or Pro Neck or copy (not original), the green chainwheel/OPC cranks/pedals were installed by the owner, and I'm not sure if that's a Hutch seatpost or not. You have a Hutch donut clamp (desireable) and a white Dominator seat which is worth something if it isn't totally shot.

Again...good score!

If you were an Itson flatland fan use Z Rims.
If you were a Dominguez vert fan use black Tuff wheels.
I myself prefer chrome, spoked rims.

If youre going to leave it chrome than chrome spokes wheels and everything else chrome.i saw a test of the trickstar in bmxplus and that has to be the best looking bike ever all chrome

Give it an oxalic acid bath as agentheinz stated and based off the state of the chrome then decide what to do with finish on the F and F. Regarding wheels, do whatcha like. Acs Zs would be nice. Myself I am a Tuffs guy but again since the Trick Star was sold as a seperate F and F there is no right or wrong. The only thing you might consider would be based on the date (get the serial number and we can then find out when it was made) certain wheel styles where more popular at certain times. For example if it is a really early Trick Star, Super Pros would not be era correct. But that only matter if you care. It is your bike build it how you want.

Nice find! I am happy for you.

Serial number is 0645813 The neck is a tuff neck, The seat is in really scratched up looks like the back end of it has been eating the asphalt alot. The forks and handle bars will need to be rechromed. I use a shop in pensylvania for all my car chrome and they are really good but it takes them at least 6 months to get stuff back to you because they are always busy. The frame only has two rust spots(right under the donut clamp and on the neck of the frame) I am including pics of those spots. The seat post needs to be rechromed also how do I tell if it was made by hutch? I dont want to pay to rechrome a generic seat post. I like the chrome idea for wheels as i am going to leave it all chrome. I think the rear wheel was a black tuff wheel? I like the look of them also. At least I am going to have 6 months to decide on what wheels to put on it since I cant decide i like the looks of so many rims. Does anyone know what kind of yellow acs wheels i have on the front of the bike? I like the looks of that wheel also. i am going to give the frame a oxalic acid bath this weekend and let you guys know how it turned out. THANKS ALOT for all the info you guys have gave me so far biggrin.gif

I'd have C4Labs powder coat the F & F and handlebars. The new sealed bearing Skyway Tuff 2's are best - they are super fast low friction wheels compared to the oldschool Skyways.

Wow! First - welcome to the vintageBMX. Second - thats a really nice find. I wouldn't worry about what people would expect on a TS, but build it with components you prefer..make it your own. I also wouldn't worry about the worth of the item..it seems you obtained it without thought to its worth..so I'd build it without thought to the worth. If it doesn't clean up well, I'd have it rechromed or powdercoated don't worry about if it hurts the value or not, just have fun and enjoy it.

Didn't get to give the frame a oxalic bath this weekend having problems trying to find it where i live. I plan on buying some off ebay and then I will take pics as it eating the rust off.
