There used to be local contest here in Minnesota in the summer. Marty is from here and he left to go to California, rode for Mongoose. When he came back to visit he hit up the local contest. He definitely had the skills. He hit the quarterpipe a few times but mostly rode small ramp and flatland. Here's a few shots.

One thing he did, not too many people can claim. He made the cover of Freestylin".. That had to be every riders dream....

Did he ride with his brakes "euro" style? Front brake-right hand, rear brake-left?

I remember being at one AFA Masters (Tucson 1987 maybe?) where he slammed HARD during his vert run. I remember seeing his whole body bounce when he hit the concrete. Ugly.

I didn't know but looking at the pix it sure looks that way. The way he's got the right grip toward the seat, and the right lever pulled way in in the other photo up there while doing the no footer. I never would have caught that.

Odd to see this post. Marty recently moved back to Hawaii. He did have skills but all I can think about though, is the fact that he was stealing my tortilla chips today. He still rides and spent the summer helping out at Woodward West. And yes, his brakes are still backwards. Screws me up all the time.

I'm gonna show him these shots tomorrow at the shop.

Yes, Marty runs his brakes left handed and always has.

Marty did marry Skip Hess's daughter and have a lovely daughter...unforutnately they did get divorced in 1994 but things are cool.

It would be great to ride with Marty again and unfortuately I'm in a six month traveling work project so can't make the the Woodward OS event.
