Full Version: What kind of 26" cruiser is this?

Hi there,
I'm hoping that someone out there might be able to help me identify the manufacturer of my 26" cruiser. Please see the photos I've posted.
My guess is that it is a '90's era frame due to the cantilever braze-ons for the back brake but I'm no expert. The narrow gauge tubeset makes it look older. There is good attention to detail on the frame; the welds are clean, the rear brake cable guide is a nice piece and there are braze-on cable guides running along the right side of the top tube. The stays are capped. It seems to be of decent quality and I'm assuming it has a chromoly tubeset as the frame is fairly light.
Some nice folks have suggested that it may possibly be a CW, a Free Agent or an L&S (Boss USA) and from what I can tell the L&S/Boss appears to be the closest possibility but still has slightly different shaped dropouts, a chainstay gusset which my cruiser doesn't have, and old style calipers. The tubing diameter looks about right though.
Anyways, if anyone can lend an idea I'd be grateful. Thanks for your help and expertise!

mr coasterbrake
i'd rule out Boss - they had distinctive dropouts.

free agents should have both reinforcing rings on the head tube and head tube gussets.

has similar/same drops as a free agent, though, but so did quite a few frames back then.

how long is the head tube? kinda looks like maybe a 5" from the pic.

Sure looks like a Boss to me.

A-1 Locksmith I believe

That has to be it. Thanks Todd! I'm reading up on the origins via an old post which you were a part of: GBJ Bikes?

From what I've read it is definitely true that the stays are super short on this bike. Are most people setting these up as street riders now due to the fact that it's difficult to put a fat tire on the rear?

I'd be very grateful for any more information that you could provide!

Thanks again.

Cruzer Todd didn't get his name fer nuthin'. A-1 is a good call.
Those were made in San Antonio and sold here in Austin at a local locksmith/bike shop near the UT campus. Late eighties up through mid to late nineties.
Where did it come from?
Where are you located now?

I'm in Madison, Wisconsin. A friend of mine picked it up at a rummage sale here and pretty much never touched it. I got it from him. I'm really curious as to how it made its way up here from SA/Austin. Were they mostly a local brand or did they have distribution?
Thanks for the info. I plan on cleaning it up, replacing the headset, the rear axle needs to be re-spaced, replacing the rear brake calipers and the tires. Not exactly sure what tires I'll put on yet. I'm open to suggestions.

My buddy Mean Mel, who currently works for Cothron's, worked at A-1 back in the early/mid 90's. I'll ask him what exactly was going on these with bikes, he would know better than anyone.

That'd be great, thanks! Another curious aspect to this bike is the name 'John West' etched into the bottom bracket. I dunno if this was a former owner or what but it may shed some light somewhere.
Again, I appreciate your help and expertise.

Talked to Mel yesterday and found out some stuff. He said......

No more than 25 of theses frames were made

They were made by Fabweld

The frames all came with GBJ stickers on them (the owner of A-1's initials)

A-1 is still in business as a mobile locksmith

Geometry is loosely based off of OM Flyer angles

They were all sold locally here in Austin

Thanks cruzertodd. And thanks to Mean Mel also! I really appreciate the information.
I wonder if I could get any of those GBJ stickers...

And if you look at the photos again you'll notice a Texas Longhorn sticker on the head tube.
That would definitely indicate that it came from Austin, TX.

Thanks again for all the great information, everyone. If I were to replace the bars, headset and possibly the crankset, do any of you, or does anyone here have any good suggestions for top, period correct options?
