Maybe a stupid question, but being a bit older now, I'd rather not find out the hard way.
So I'm having problems with getting air out of a quarter w/ vert. When reaching the coping should you bunnyhop slightly, or just ride through it and let the coping push you out slightly?
Basically I'm looking for a step by step how-to.

If you mean true vert (like, actually straight up and down) you should be able to just ride off the top and get where you're needing to go. If it's actually a mini-ramp (radius of the transition is greater than the height of the ramp) you will have to bunnyhop away from the transition a bit as you ride off the top. Otherwise you'll end up on the deck.

Yes that makes sense, and I'm talking about true vert.
I don't agree with the new way of referring to mini-ramps as quarters. If it doesn't go to vert than I don't consider it a quarter.

OK, then we're on the same page.
With vert I'll actually try to push into the transition (the vert) a little bit and then hang over the deck a little bit (a little bit, don't hang up) and then upon re-entry tuck a little bit so you come in compressed and have something to pump with as you go down the transition. But at least initially, just ride off the top.
In fact, don't pull away because you could end up down in the flat bottom which could be painful.

Airing quarters has been my nemisis for years. I just started airing out this year and it took a good 6 months of solid 3 days a week park riding to get to that point. You definately want to pump the transition. The faster you go, the more you pump. If you don't pump enough it will kill your speed and height. If you pump too much you will pull off the ramp and land low on the transition. Really your just resisting your forward motion to start traveling up, so its more of a resist than a true pump. On smaller ramps that are under vert you actually need to pump like you are bunny hopping. However, not at the coping, it is done uniformly from the bottom to the top of the ramp. On vert all the pumping is done in the transition and then you just ride over the coping while starting to make your turn. If your airing higher that 4 ft. you can start to make your turn after both tires have left the coping. Airing quarters is the hardest thing I've ever tried to learn on a bike. You can think about what to do till your blue in the face but the best thing to do is try over and over and go a little higher each time because it is 100% feel and you should feel comfortable and in control. When it starts to feel good its time to start going higher. Hope some of this makes sense!

and then one time you relax and case and go over the bars cause your elbows have been blown out and you dont have much grip, and boom, your afraid and have to start all over... or just forget about it. lol.

The only way to go big out of transition ramps: take your balls out of your purse just before hitting up the park. I have been working on this technique for over 20 years. No guts no glory

When I was a wee lad and we built our first QP it didn`t take long to start getting just above coping. A couple of weeks later and most of us were getting foot high airs, and it stayed that way for most of the summer. Then we built a starting ramp in front of the QP and were getting the same foot high airs with half the pedaling (small yard). One of my friends decided to just take one extra crank into the ramp and shot up about 2 feet out. Of course that led to a week`s worth of one upmanship and a few of us were hitting 3 and 4 foot airs out of this little quarter pipe on a regular basis. Many months and a new (and bigger) ramp later we had pics in the local newspaper of 3 or 4 of us a solid 6 feet out (that`s how tall the height meter was anyway). All stemmed from getting comfortable with the technique then going a little faster each time.
Flash forward to about a year ago. I was at the skatepark with one of the best young riders around here (kid named Spencer Bass). I was back to getting my 1 foot air and was obviously frustrated. Spencer told me instead of going straight up and back down, try to carve. Not just a little, he said go as fast as I could and just carve as many sheets of plywood I could. Once I got about 4 he said "ok, now get both tires above coping, even if it`s just a couple of inches carving that far." That eventually turned into getting a couple of feet out. Nothing to brag about but fun.
Two completely different approaches (the old quarter pipe was only 12 feet wide, not a lot of carving there) with the same principle. Get a technique then take it up a notch at a time.

when and IF i ever have a house and a backyard to build a big half pipe, i've been thinking of having a super wide section, maybe the middle 12 feet or maybe one entire side to be a massive roll-in.
what do yall think.
seems like it would be a great spot to learn to blast big airs.

Much easier to type rather than do, however, as jesboogie says, you have to commit.
Many a time I have gone in half-assed and nearly split myself in two on the way down.
