My son has been drooling over the Sunday Funday and his borthday is coming up. He is an average sized 12 year old and used to race but now plays other sports now in addition to riding street/trails/park. He moved up to a 20" Eastern Shovelhead last summer from an 18" bike and I'm thinking of helping him out by getting all the relatives to pitch in and get him a new bike. Apart from his old race bikes, all his street stuff has been used and purchased with his own money.

What is the general consensus on this bike for a complete new street bike? Price from Sunday is $480 for the Expert model and I'm not too familiar with what all the other brands have to offer in that range. Are there other bikes in that price range that would be a better deal?

The main thing that jumps out at me is that it isn't a full cro-mo frame... Alot of other companies are offering full cro-mo frames at the $500 price point.. The We The People Trust is really nice, also DK has the Effect @ $489 which looks to be a pretty decent ride..

First, I'm a huge fan of the Funday!. I've been riding the frame for about a year now & love it.
But I have to agree, that for less than that price, you can get a few other bikes that are full chromoly & similarly spec'd.

Now if you were willing to step up a notch to the Funday Pro, at $650 (which I believe is the suggested retail), I don't think there is a better complete. I feel it is even better spec'd than many bikes costing more.

At 12 years old, he is going to have a tough time breaking that bike even if it isn't all chromoly. More importantly, the spec is great. Full of Odyssey parts. That is the stuff that usually blows up before a frame. I think it's a good deal for the money. If it is the bike her really wants, get it for him. If you get him anything else, it'll be a disapointment.

That is what I was thinking last night as well with regards to the frame. If anything, it could last 2 years and then upgrade the frame only and he will be fine. And like the second point you mentioned, anything else and he will be disapointed. I asked him last night if there were any other bikes he liked and he said no. Why he likes it, Aaron, and it is just a funny name and my kid is quirky like that.

I know Jim personally, he puts a lot of work and effort into designing his frames. I've had a 2nd Wave for about a year and half and so far it's been worth every penny I spent on it. Hands down the best frame I've ever ridden in 20+ years of doing this. I would say go with the Funday.

Second, Third, Fourth on the Sunday. I ride a first wave 20"tt and the geo and build is spot on. My first taiwan frame ever. I built mine from scratch, but I dont think you can go wrong with a Sunday complete. Your son has good taste. JD

For those interested, the new completes finally arrived in the US last week and are being shipped to bike shops this week. I'll be getting my son's bike from Empire BMX.
