Thomson Elite/ mystery carbon/ Ti seat Vs. New Uni Pro "Hammerhead"

Also some pre-market shims.

In spite of Mike thinking I have a direct affiliation with Uni (He's not who I'm worried about), it's no more special that any of us here would have if we emailed or called.

There is a story of a purchase confusion that goes along with this whole thing, but to protect the innocent and all the good actors connected with this new seat, I will refrain from boring you with details.
Mr. Berg has asked me to test his new "Shim Dandy" and "Shim wow" seat shims.

I can say the Shim Dandies work great and fill a void that was missing with the uni seats.
Now Unis will fit basically any frame.

The Shim Wow (funny name), I guess was just a prototype print sheet? It was paper but the paper was elaborately marked and had printed on it simple usage instructions for what seems to be an aluminum adhesive foil that will make your post fit snugly.

I guess the combination of the two shim methods, plus the availability of the 7/8th and 1"post diameters will make any uni fit any frame.
The way it seems they work is they are all long 1/3 circumference sleeves that go together to nearly join around your post and fit snugly into the frame. The picture only has two.

The shims work great Mr. Berg!

The seat: Looked really good.

The weights:

That Thomson post was cut down as well.

3 ounces difference, cool.

I'll keep the three ounces to avoid having one of those funny looking Uni seats on my bike. I could never, ever get over the look of those.

It looks like what it does. It's a seat, it's super frickin' light, rigid,,, and it stays tucked out of the way from literally every angle. Plus, it will rise up to a semi usable height.

I say it looks fast.

I just don't think 3 ounces is worth it. I'd rather have a nice, padded seat to sit on during cool downs.

kinda like those totally ugly and heavy shimano cranks you fawn over.
Jason F.
and like that other seat doesnt look retarded??? come off it, guys will spend 200 bucks getting ti spokes to save a few GRAMS and your worried about you little butt hurting when you can depending on the seat and post you have save over a 1LB!!!! get with it, its not about looks its about weight and winning.

I don't like, nor run DXR cranks on my bike. Although when you factor in the weight including bottom bracket they are lighter then profiles. So I don't get where the "heavy" comment comes from.

And I feel sorry for anyone that thinks 3 ounces is going to win them a race.

i've been thinking about the getting the new uni-seat, it even has a little storage area for your junk.

sarcastic.gif

All kidding aside, does the seat come with the shims? and what is the cost of the uni's?

Wouldn't storing junk in your seat offset the weight savings that you just received by switching to an Ugly-er-um-Uni seat?

Then you haven't seen some of the races I have.

A race is not one single event, but a long series of moments.

I'm not a mathematician, but a 3 oz. weight advantage is a repeated advantage over the entire course. With every pump or every pedal, any weight advantage repeats itself throughout a race and stacks itself against the weight of another's bike.

In other words, by the end of a race, your bike was several pounds lighter than your competitor.

I've watched one of our local experts spank his class week after week on a 30lb, off the shelf redline freestyle bike after his race bike got broken. This going against kids that were on 2K dollar race bikes.

People make way, way too much of small weight savings. The only place it really matters is in rotational weight as the more rotational weight you carry the harder it is to get things spinning. Saving 3 ounces on a seat/post combo isn't going to give you an advantage. I guess if you think it's giving you an advantage then more power to you. Half this sport is mental anyway.

Honestly, if it were that important then why don't see see all the AA and Elite men running Uni seats to save 3 ounces? The only person I see running a "mini" seat is dR. The rest of the guys are running normal seat/post combos. Why? Because weight in that area of the bike isn't that important.

I would like to see and full on weight comparison on a scale.
Brandon002
Profile GDH (arms and spindle only) 28.5oz
Profile 4 bolt spider 3.1 oz
Profile euro bottom bracket 5.3oz
Total - 36.9oz

Shimano DXR cranks (arms, spindle and bottom bracket and attached four bolt spider) 35.9oz - total

There's a 1 ounce difference. So I don't see how people that love profiles can call DXR's heavy.
Lonewolf
Brandon, you got me.

Okay, you are right. Heavy race bikes are better than light ones.

Never said heavy was better buddy. Just that people make way too much out of tiny weight savings.

These shims are pre production. As far as I know, this could be the first time anyone has seen them.

I do not know if they will come with the seats, but if they don't, they couldn't cost very much. As far as I know they are available.

Cost of seat: Good question. I have no idea. I know that Mr. Berg is doing a new promotion where they have never been less expensive, but the website showed $50 for the 7/8ths post and $60 for the 1". An ebay store connected to the company had them for $32.

He said the prices on his website were incorrect and that it was too much and needed to talk to his web guy or something.

I also sent him the link to this thread last night, so he may be able to chime in.

Maybe he'll become an advertiser, because there are a lot of BMX dads hobbling around here.

I like how these seats cup-de-ballz. BECAUSE

And my balls are always bouncing
My ballroom always full
And everybody cums and cums again
If your name is on the guest list
No one can take you higher
Everybody says I've got
Great balls of fire...

hey just trying to make people laugh!

well 1 ounce lighter I am shocked because the weight I saw on the arms a while back was like 3-4 ounces heavier, so you got me, they are still ugly as all get out though look like something on a mgx wallmart mtb, and I am a BIG fella and my profiles dont flex so I am at loss at why people think they flex, I just cant and wont run aluminum cranks especially ones that make your bike look cheap, maybe they need chrome plated.... laugh.gif

you weight weenies want to add weight to the cranks with chrome plating? wink.gif

As far as the flex is concerned, hop on a bike with DXR's after riding your profiles for a bit. You'll notice the difference. Profiles are great cranks and I ran them almost the entire time I raced. I recently switched to the Rhythm pro cranks and will never look back from running two piece, external bearing cranks again. The ease of install, the feel when riding them can't be matched. I love em.

IMO both seats are ugly. As far as having a package pocket, I've been running an "anatomical seat" for awhile, but come race day I wear a jock strap. I have to 'cause sometimes they fall behind my legs and then it hurts when I move suddenly. It mostly happens on the car ride to the track but still. When I race I like everything to be nice and tight you could say and yes, my balls are always bouncing, to the left and to the right. It's my belief that my big balls should be held every night, lol.
