Same terrain, same tricks, bigger bikes.

click, watch for LOL @ 4:46

(the question those people are really asking you is "when are you going to shave your legs, buy some spandex, and start respecting the French?" hahaha)

Too bad mtn is about 8 years behind bmx, HA!

I once had a neighbor tell me, "Now, don't hurt yourself riding that little thing". I thought about telling him "likewise", seeing that his diminutive, mail-order Asian bride was standing next to him, but I didn't want to be rude to her.

I don't really like seeing mountain bikers ride street or skateparks most of the time, but I like watching those guys ride dirt and natural terrain freeriding. I'd ride a 26" if I could build up something BMX-y and reasonably inexpensive and light; kind of a supercross/motard BMX.

I just think it`s way cool that people are doing the same stuff on a 26" bike that a lot of riders can`t do on a 20.

Plus, most non riding simpletons see freestyle on a 20" bike and think "oh yeah, that`s that thing all the kids are into. When are they gonna grow up and get on an adult sized bike?" Well, to see that video it`s like saying "OK, I`m on a big bike now. You gonna try and tell me how to ride like an adult?"

I saw a 50+ year old man do a little kickout over the smallest little roller on a MTB trail last weekend. Made my day.

I just spit soda all over my comp LOL, but definately some good riding on there

Some MTB guys look at BMX and don't think of it as "real riding"
Some weekend/touring road guys look at MTB, and BMX, and don't think of it as "real riding"
Some triathalon riders look at weekend/touring riders, MTB, and BMX and don't think of it as "real riding"
Almost all serious road bike riders look at triathalon riders, weekend road/touring riders, velodrome, fixed gear, bike messenger, cruiser, trials, and all forms of MTB and BMX as "not real riding"

And then everyone else rolls by those guys and thinks, "when will that nerd take off that spandex supersuit and get a car? Why didn't they stop riding bikes when they were 14 like everyone else?"

Point is there's going to be someone who thinks what you're doing is funny looking.

How you choose to respond to this is up to you.

Just to illustrate, my point was simply that when people see us riding around on 20" bikes doing tricks they think "hmm...doing tricks on a kids` bike. How...childish. Why don`t they ride a grown up bike?"

When guys do the same tricks on big bikes it`s like saying "Ok, I`m on a bigger bike. Can I be called an adult now (yeah, I still get rad)"

See, what people REALLY want to say is "why don`t you get too friggin` lame to have any fun like me so I can call you an adult?"

Dig BMX Magazine put out some t-shirts not too long ago that said "THIS ISN'T SKATEBOARDING" on the front. They really need to do another one that reads "THIS ISN'T CYCLING".

My thought is why give in to "them" and move to an adult sized bike only to have them still not respect you? I say screw "them" from the outset!!!! Give me BMX or give me nothing! Just cause I am getting old does not mean I need bigger wheels and supension!

This was my Adolescent ride. (I've had this for 22yrs)

This is my 40+ year old Adolescent ride. (I've had this for 11yrs)

Right now I have Fun on both, and no one tells me how to have fun but me.

I use to have people ask me that when i was in my twentys. Now that i'm in my fourtys nobody says a thing to me.
BS
I was at the trails one time (Twin Palms in Riverside) and the cops rolled in and were trying to kick us out. They were talking to us like we were little kids or something and I told them, "I'm 27" (this was 13 years ago). That seemed really old back then. I'm 40 now and I still ride the trails although usually legit ones in somebodies back yard or an actual park these days.

I respect the mtb stuff but I really do think it's best on a 20" for me personally. I keep kicking the idea around of getting a 26" jumping bike but I just can't bring myself to giving in to it. I feel like if I stop riding the 20 then I'll actually be old. As long as I'm riding my 20" I'm still young. HA!

I agree with so much of this. Unlike you, I'm not a jumper, but I love the feel of a BMX. I've tried other larger wheeled bikes in the past, and I just don't like them. I can't even see myself riding a cruiser. Like you said, it really is best, on a 20".

I've finally come to realize that I'm just not the "go big or go home" type. I just like riding my bike off road, and cruising through the woods. (The occasional small jump is a great plus, but I just don't feel the need to grab huge air.) I started spending a lot of time at mountain bike trails this year, and plan to spend more time there this year. I ride them on my old BMX race bike. For me, it's just a small single speed mountain bike.

In the past I would have agreed that MTB is behind the times but then I watched a few movies and now im thinking they might be 8 years ahead of bmx. Some of the things they build is very ingenious. I also lauged @ 7:45. Big jump to tree, ouch!
Just JeffB now
For statement purposes only, there is nothing (did I say nothing? nothing) I have seen done on a 20" that I haven`t seen on a 26" as far as jumping goes. The 26er guys just just send it all off much bigger jumps. While it took a few years for the 26 crowd to catch on they are pushing right alongside the BMX ers now.

I haven`t been a fan of 26" freestyle until fairly recently, but after watching a video like New World Disorder 10 you almost can`t help it!
Jake77
Yeah NWD 10 is the movie I have. It is a must watch for anyone who rides a bike. There are quite a few parts that push the envelope further than I ever thought possible.
