I now have all of the parts to assemble my 83 Redline 600a, but I have a few questions...

1. What is the preferred way to attach crank arms to the spindle? I've heard others have worked them loose over time. Would a nut w/a nylon ring work better then a nut and lock washer?

2. Does the chainring get mounted on the frontside or the back side of the spider?

3. Where should the seat post clamp be mounted... in the middle or at the top of the tube?

Tapered spindle cranks will work loose regardless of the type of nut you put on them . How long they stay tight depends on usage and they should be checked regularly .
The chainwheel should line up with the freewheel once the back wheel is in the frame .
Seatclamp at top .

Thanks Joe, I've always put the seat post clamp in the middle. I'll put it on right this time.

Not an expert opinion here but my opinion none the less. 1. Lockwasher & Nut 2. Ring outside spider 3. Seatpost clamp on top. Oh, & thanks for restoring this piece of art!

sarcastic_hand.gif I know...I'm trying!!! I actually just got the spindle/BB bearing set a few days ago. I had soccer and bithday parties all weeken and B-Ball at night so I just have to find time. The next pic you see will be fully assembled, I promise.

the correct spindle nut is a flanged and knurled nut (looks kinda like a regular axle nut, but different size. usually black). you can get some from most bike shops.a little loctite helps.
