Straight from Lenny boys!
Seth Buccieri sold me all his old BMX bikes, frames and parts. Including the original STR 1. He has kept the STR 1 in his attic for more than 20 years! The clear coat is crinkled but the metal is awesome. He couldn't have rode it much, ever.

I would bid on it, but there are people in this hobby with pockets deeper than I\'ll make in my life time. The question on my mind is this : should it be built?

This should go to the bmx museum not ebay.
But if it ends up on the bay, it'll sure be fun to watch.

It will be interesting to see how high this goes. It must be built back to original condition and not refinished. Just my opinion

Bruce, slap yourself for me so I don't have to make the trip.
This frame was long ago deemed gone, destroyed. Some said only one was ever made some say a handfull or so were produced. Either way it (they) were all believed to have been destroyed. a fact myth that was verified by the then owners of SE.
It has been thought for years that this bike would never turn up because no examples existed.
For it to turn up, with ironclad provenance, is probably the biggest event in bmx collecting history.

The Redline Monoshock is one of my favorites of all time, and one of the rarest too, but RCain's got a great point! There are 4 Redline Monoshocks known of already, and even though as I said before it is one of my all-time favorites, it just doesn't have the aura around it that this Original SE STR-1 Frame has!!! I'd call it the #1 Holy Grail of Vintage BMX, but I think there are a few Holy Grail-esque bikes out there that could be seen as Holy Grails as well, like the: '75 Redline Monoshock; '73 Redline Big-Loop; '75 Redline 26"; '79/'80 SE 24/26" Quadangle; '80ish GJS 24"; '74 Cook Bros Monoshock; etc. I guess it all depends on who you ask! And, if you determine the Holy Grail status by the type of bike & the number produced or that currently exist, or by the rider who rode it, or a combination! I know some who think Dave Clinton's Kawasaki is the Holy Grail--even though a ton of Kawasakis were made! But, I'd say it is the general concensus of the Vintage BMX Community that the Original SE STR-1 is considered the Holy Grail of Vintage BMX--especially since nobody knew if one still existed for such a long time now! And, the Redline Monoshock might follow it in at 2nd--especially after the article printed about it in that recent BMX Magazine--I don't know how they determined it was the #1 sought-after Vintage BMX Bike though--I think the writer was just a big Redline Monoshock fan!

I don't remember any surveys or polls about it! lol. If there were a poll, I'd have probably voted for the Redline too! lol. As much as I love the Redline Monoshock, I'd have to give Holy Grail status to the Original SE STR-1!!!!!

What RCain and Scubadoo said x10.
I can't believe Tim Cook didn't stumble across this a long time ago or Seth or Lenny at least posting it a long time ago. "What? This old thing?"
scubadoo79
Nov 17 2009, 08:21 AM
That's exactly what I was thinking Todd!!! Why now, and why didn't one of the big dogs get to this earlier? Maybe they knew about it, but just didn't say anything because they wanted to buy it, but the owner didn't want to sell at the time, and so they didn't want others to know it was out there?
And Aggy, yes, it does look like on the Blue one that the gusset, from where it is on the Brown one, was moved up to be under the BB rather than behind it! It also looks a little thicker than the Gusset on the Brown one! Did anyone notice the second gusset or connecting piece that is actually under the tubing of the Blue one, connecting one chainstay to the other just behind the bb? That piece is not on the Brown one either!

I'd say it's Dayton coupe #1/prototype the area between the cowl and rear tire is slightly different than any other Daytonas I have seen,a little shorter

I believe we have the social network of Facebook to thank for this. Lenny is on there and is re-connecting with old BMX buddies, just like a lot of us. He just happened to have this crown jewel in his possession! Facebook connected me with the one person I knew of that ever owned a TW (besides Pete or Denny Davidow) and of course it was the first thing I asked him about (it is long gone). Yes, I love technology. One more thing. As awesome as this find is, it confirms why the BB design was changed to the Quadangle configuration we all know...that BB set up is gross. Yeah, I said it. Ha ha.

Thats worth a whole lot more than the STR-1

is it? by worth do you mean historically or intrinsically or $$$? while it has a wider audience for potential buyers with more of them having the ability to lay down giant loads of cash, I think if you base it solely on what they mean to each passion, in comparison the str1 could be argued to be its equal, if we take MONEY and popularity out of the picture. This is after all about history, not money, correct?
Personally in this stage of my life, the car is cool....REALLY cool, but really means nothing more to me than something I will most likely never have a chance to own, say as important to me as a Stickley or a Gauguin and I was never a participant in that scene so other than showing off, to me owning the car would mean no more to me than using it to stroke my ego when others freaked out over it, but I still appreciate what it is, just not any more or any less.

Shoot I couldn't afford either the car or the frame, but I would say the car's impact was greater in it's arena that the frame was in it's IMO
My money is on Juan to come up with it, ebay or not

See to me, the quadangle was by far the most original frame ever built and while that shelby is probably my most favorite design/look, it was not a complete departure from car design at the time.
