Heh heh... came across footage of the last time I really tried to dial in tailwhips. About 8 years ago, some trails in Bithlo, FL. Last attempt resulted in a severely sprained right wrist with a couple broken finger/hand bones... yeah. Awesome. Never did them since. Maybe a footplant one here and there.
Enjoy.

Man, that`s EXACTLY what I did when I first started learning them. The one piece of advice I got that turned it into something I could roll away from....
Use your arms more. Use the bars to get the frame around instead of trying to kick it all the way around. I pulled off about 8 out of 10 last time I rode but now I don`t have time to wipe my.....yeah.....let alone ride my bike so I haven`t been able to relish in my own success

Yes, I do know this... I am just not very good at putting stuff into practice. I dont know why, it is wierd. sometimes I have to quit a trick for months or years, then when I come back and try it, bam, got it.
Tailwhips, though... man, I dont even know if I really want to go back and try them.. I ride with to many guys who do em ALOT.... and see alot of brokend ankles, legs, sprains, deep shin diggers, ball rides, etc.... all the time. from guys who can do em in bunnyhops, 360s, flips... it is a trick that you WILL mess up on, and when you do, it hurts. lol.
I did pull em before, but this was back in the era when people were just starting to do em... and usually causgt their frame. I caught with my right on frame, left on pedal. right around the time Taj pulled the first to pedal one... I remember hearing that and thinking that is crazy....

Have you ever tried bunnyhop tailwhip.
I have tried and tried with no success. I can get the frame around but can`t keep my legs up long enough to get my foot over the top tube. Without the kick of the lip of a jump I just don`t "float" long enough.
(but then again, I also ride a bike with a 21.5" TT so it spins pretty slow compared to some of the shorter bikes)

What's crazy is that you try these hard tricks with no safety gear! No wonder why when you crash & burn it hurts so bad! If I was gonna try a tailwhip jump the first time I'd have a helmut, knee pads, and gloves on!
