Full Version: to resticker or not to re-sticker that is the question

I found a really nice survivor '87 Sport and I am trying to decide whether to re-sticker it. The paint is really good on this bike so I am not powdering it. The original stickers are no longer yellow for the most part and they are pulling up a little in some places. So my question is do I apply the new stickers or leave the old faded ones on there? Since I'm leaving original paint I can't decide if re-stickering it will hurt its value or help it.

even still has a reflector!

First of all, NICE BIKE!!!!!! 87 Sport, so awesome!!!! One of my all time fave's. That's a tough one on the stickers. For me it wouldn't be tough, I'd leave the old ones on it. I know the yellow is faded, but they look real nice from here other than that. But man, sitting there with the new set in your hands, do I replace them?, do I leave the old?, lol. You're going to have to make that call. My opinion is no, but if you want to make it look like a brand new bike, seems like that's about all you'd have to do. I know they don't like talking about value and all, but since you mentioned it and if that's what you're going for, leave the old ones on and give the new sticker set with it if you sell it. That would be your best bet for that. Ones that want a nice new looking sticker set wouldn't mind putting it on themselves, and those who would pass because of the new sticker set who would have wanted it more with the originals will still be interested.

Man, I need to find a white one as nice as that!

It is in pretty amazing shape. I don't think whomever owned it must have ridden it like we all did. Couldn't believe the made in Taiwan sticker was still on the upper seat tube. Crazy. Good idea on giving the sticker with the bike if I sell it.

Lol, I know. That "made in" sticker would have came off right with the reflectors back then.

I'd leave it alone, looks great as it is. cool.gif

Awesome survivor, leave the original stickers!

The answer is "not to re-sticker".
Everyone has the repros these days, and in the future even fewer people will have the OG ones.
Keep 'em! They are in awesome condition too for their age! Never mind the faded yellow, that's what make them cool

exactly
Pauly
I'd be more concerned with re-treading that bike then putting on new decals.
It looks great but please dump the knobbies.
crowe-t
If you have a set of NOS decals and the paint is real clean without too many nicks/scratches then I'd say re-sticker. However I wouldn't replace original decals with repros.

I'd leave it stock for now, ditch the nobbies for some comp or GT tires (the 1st issue GT's were my favorite for flatland back in the scuffing days) and track down some 48's.

I had a master w/the same color combo, kneesavers & chromed 48's w/coaster brakes. Man I miss that bike.

Yah, don't worry those crappy tires were on the bike when I found it. They are one of the first things I am changing. I have never liked those tires unless your on dirt or something. I also need to replace the chain with a properly colored KMC, this one is blue and I don't remember them coming that way. Also the front brake pads are wrong. Other than that its a damn nice survivor.

I think Brian P years ago was one of the first to push the survivor movement, and after I accumulated and completed a few restorations I decided to start collecting survivors with all the scratches and tatty stickers. They really tell a story.

I'd leave the originals on and find a frame at a later date to powder and sticker if you're looking for a project.
Larryboy
I see everyone's point, but I gotta go with Crowe. I'd put the new decals on. Actually, I'm personally OK with repros though.

Two thoughts. First, one of the coolest things about the 80's freestyle bikes were the asthetics. The styling of the 87/88 Haros is unmatched IMO and the colors were a big part of that. Just look at PJ's Master a few threads down. That is smokin'.

Second, it's not like it's YOUR survivor. If it were I'd probably be more likely to agree with leaving it alone. But maintaining someone else's history (which you don't know and doesn't look to be much history anyway based on the lack of wear) doesn't seem enough reason to keep it looking less than top-notch.

I know I'm in the minority, but you asked for opinions. Either way it's a classic ride. Dig it.

Save the new set for a later project. The ones on it look fine!
justlive
I think it looks great as-is. I definately wouldn't re-sticker it. The paint is great and the decals are fine. Another thing to consider is, if u do decide to re-sticker it more than likely the old stickers will pull up some of the paint as well. I've seen that happen on many of those bikes through the years. I would just leave it be.
Spicoli
I wouldnt touch them...nice bike !
boxline69
Keep it as is!!!

OG is best and more desired!!

I got the exact same bike as yours and my stickers are cracked, - so yeah, I'd remove the old stickers and resticker it. But your stickers are Yellow on the "Sport" word wereas the original stickers are white.
donvader
The word was yellow on the 87's like his here, it just faded a lot real fast. The color scheme got rid of the yellow and changed to white on the 88. I remember, I had one of each at the time. They'd crack by the seat tube under the seat clamp and Haro would send me another. Well, I'd bring it to the bike shop and they'd have another in a few days. Gotta love warrantees sometimes. I still have my 88 with the white letters. Here's a pic from the 87 catalog, that yellow would fade real bad, and my old blue/black 88 one with the white letters, just to show the difference. It went to white and silver words in 88 on the blue frames.

My old 88 frame today. On the other side, the word Haro is in silver and Sport is in white.
Lonewolf
Those were great looking bikes. Do not re sticker. Keep new stickers with it. If you ever go to sell it, just sell it with the new decals.

It's a survivor. Don't mess with it right now. Check back in 15 years.
