Not too long ago I signed up on Facebook. I used to be on Myspace a lot and some friends from there said there was a bunch more of our old friends on the other site and some stuff about our 20 year high school reunion too, which will be next year. So anyway I signed up on there and met up with my friend Jill who I hadn't talked to in years. I posted some pix of my bikes up on my page and she commented on my purple GT and told me she still had her pink one. She kept it all these years and said she just couldn't get rid of it. She had since moved to Florida, and when her mom told her they were thinking of selling it at a sale before they moved down there themselves, she said she wouldn't let them sell it and they had to bring it with them. She's pretty cool like that. Somewhere along the way when she told me she still had it and wasn't sure what to do with it, I jokingly said she should give it to me. She then said she would but didn't know how to get it to me. So without stretching out this story with every e-mail we had with each other, she said I could have her bike because looking at all my others, she knew I'd take good care of her and make her nice again.
So now the next awesome thing, Lou, who's also the guy who introduced me to this site like 5 years ago, said he'd pick it up from her and mail it to me. How freaking awesome is that?!!! He lives in FL I think about an hour away from my friend. He has it right now. These are the pix she sent me of it. Total survivor, the exact same bike we used to ride around on the streets together with when I had my green Trick Star, and later Haro. A little dirty, but I think a good cleaning is going to do wonders for this one. I'll get more pix eventually, but this is it. Oh yeah, and her (the bike) name is Lola.

hey don, did you have something to do with those bars originally getting put on there?

Nov 12 2009, 06:10 PM
Lol, man I can't remember. This was like 25 or so years ago. Could be at least indirectly. I know they were my favorite since I saw them, ordered them to be on my first bike shop bike, and we all looked at the same magazines and stuff and talked about what we wanted. I just can't believe none of us ever hooked up a cable through that potts mod bolt for her. What the heck was wrong with us?! I want to keep this as original as possible, but she wants me to make it nice again. I may get the bars re-done, they're pretty beat, and put a longer cable on there for that potts mod. Just because it's something I should have done years and years ago. Looks like that frame is going to clean up perfect, the rust should come off the bolts and cranks no problem, and I'm sure I could get the wheels and seat looking nice.

Very Nice!!! The funny thing to me is those are the exact same bars I just put on my 86 PFT build. I always loved those bars! I bought a blue set bitd for my Haro FST I had.

When you first said you were just going to clean it up, I was skeptical, but that is like night and day. Great job!

WOW, did that come out nice!!!!
I may have to try the Mothers Aluminum Polish on mine.
Just my humble opinion, but I'd leave the headtube sticker (and all of the others) on there. It fits right in with the little nicks and scratches, that when all together, give the bike it's character.
But, YMMV.
Either way, VERY sweet job.

Thanks everyone! Its coming out better everyday.
I cleaned up the pedals.
one clean, one dirty

all clean

cleand bottom brakcet and sprocket, OA'd the cranks

Cleaned up the stem. (still dirty pic below) The potts bolt snapped when I was putting it back on though, so I had to replace it.

I got the white chain clean too. I really thought I was going to have to replace it, but I scrubbed it with WD40 and a toothbrush to get the dried up gunk and dirt off, then OA'd it to get the rust off, then just kept wiping it off until it looked pretty awesome. I don't have a before pic other than a pic of the bunch of parts on the table onthe first page, because I thought it was hopeless when I started it. Oh well.
Here's a mock-up with mags. I want some white GT tires and am going to clean up the Z-rims and get them back on, but I just wanted to get it ridable. No seat right now, I'm looking into a few.

Wow. That's by far, the best "cleanup" job I've ever seen. Like someone else said, it's like night and day. Excellent job on that. It looks great with the mags by the way!

Thanks a lot!
No paint, just polishing. I just used Mothers aluminum polish and paper towels. Just rubbed it around lightly until it started to look bright again, then shined it up with a dry paper towel. I'm not sure why I decided to try it on paint, but I did and it worked awesome. I'm still going to get the Woody Z-rims back on it, but I haven't been working on them. I'll get to them though.
Thanks! Don
