Or, should it be painted another way?
As noted in a much earlier post, I was undecided as to what color to paint my Quad, but I have finally decided to go with the original Candy Red.
What I want to know is this color possible with powder coating, or is there a better way to do it?
I do not have a clue about paints and powder coats and whatnot.

I have seen candy red listed as a powder coat color, but I have no idea how it looks compared to true candy red. "Candy" paint jobs usually run a decent amount of money due to the amount of labor that goes into the paint job. Not counting primer, your looking at around 9 to 11 coats since you have to do the base coatings, the clear gold and clear coat plus curing time. If the Candy red powder coat isn't to your liking, you can go with a nice polane paint in the color you want and add some pearl to the paint. It isn't as cheap as a spray bomb job but it does look really nice and fairly close to candy red. It was years ago and that bike is long gone but I used the same red as 1988 Ford Thunderbirds came in with the pearl.

Candy red is possible with powdercoating. Something that will help in overall appearence is a shiny basecoat such as a chrome or silver metallic powder, this will enhance the effect. When I use to do candy colors a good brand of powder was Tiger Drylac it wold lay down real nice and not have some of your typical orange peel that some powders tend to have.Typical Price on a custom coa job such as that could be $200 maybe more and some of that is just because of the minimum powder order. If you could get lucky and find a shop around that may have some instock. Hope that info helps.

candy red is completely possible with powder coat. I have a powder in stock that doesn`t even require a base coat. It does require a clear to activate it (hence why it`s called a "dormant" color). It looks really great with lots of depth.

Down here in OZ Roberto does a Candy Red and it's very good. I have my Vbars done in it.

Yeah we used to have our own powercoating facility, and using a 2 step process, like a base coat then the candy red on top has the best appearence....as dadoftwins mentioned a chrome or a metallic silver base, depending on if you want a "metal flake" appearence will enhance the color or overall result you seek. The dormant as the other poster mentioned is another option, but not as "candy" as the base then top coat. Good luck to you

I woulsd like for someone like that to do the work for me, but I am extremely paranoid about shipping my frame anywhere. That thing is irreplacable.

I totally understand the feeling. I actually drove my frames up there (about 1100 miles from me! Luckily, I've got family within a half hour of him). He repaired my Torker that i've had since '80 and this Goose. If it helps, his garage is absolutely stuffed with irreplaceable bikes! If you can muster the courage, Tim is definately the man.

That looks GREAT Brisben! Did you just clean up the chrome and coat over it? I love the look of transparent colors over chrome, but I can`t force myself to coat over a good chrome job...

Screw it. I`ve got a chrome `86 free agent micro mini sitting in the garage collecting dust. I`m gonna hit that sucker with some powder...

There are good powder coaters in Bakersfield. If I remember right I think American Fabrication is one. Kris Mulhause that runs Metro BMX uses a shop there in town quite a bit. He can refer you to one. No shipping necessary.

...although you may want to use dudes that are on this site, I guess.

Australia's version of Chip at C4 labs, Roberto at Lewis & Sons Powdercoating, here in Brisbane did the rest, he buffed the frame then hit it with a candy coat over the chrome. Collectors in Australia send their stuff from all over the country to him.

Different to the Dormant red, which I understand has a silver undercoat, then the red, then a clear on the top

The dormants have their own built in base coat. It`s weird, when you first shoot the powder (I`ll use red for an example), the dry powder is red, and the coated object looks velvety red. Stick it in the oven and it turns silver. Not just "kinda" silver, I mean straight up chrome looking! Then you clear coat and bake again and the red comes back out, activated by the clear (hence why it`s called a dormant).

Profile has offered their cranks powdered candy apple red as a limited edition color. I just got them and while not as good as some of the pics over chrome/nickel, still very nice looking. Very close in color to Profile's red annodize.

This guy is so kool that if I bring him a totally prepped F/F he charged me $60.

YES .... $60 to powder a F & F !

His finish was very smoothe on both the TT & DT a little orange peel on the seat mast area only.
