hi --

can anybody please explain the differences between the 3 generations of '84 haro masters? i can tell that the coaster brake bracket's above the chainstay on the newer ones, but other than that, have no idea how to distinguish them.

the gen 1's were made by torker, and the others in taiwan, right?

thanks!

The 1st Gen has no chevrons on the gusset, serial number on the dropout and the coaster brake bracket is on the bottom.
The 2nd Gen has no chevrons in the gusset, really slim chain stay top tubes at their end (Reason why they came out with a 3rd gen to correct it), coaster brake bracket still on top and has serial number on the dropout
Third gen also have chevrons, it has has thicker ends at the top chain stay tubes, Coaster brake bracket under and serial number under the Bottom bracket.

Here goes,

1st Gen is Torker made, has no "Chevrons" in the headtube gusset, the coaster tab in UNDER the chainstay, serial # is on the rear dropout (example: TGG XX54 F). The seatmast on the 1st and 2nd gens is shorter then the 3rd gens. The stays are of the same diameter (non tapered).

2nd Gen is also Torker made and has no "Chevrons" in the headtube gusset, the coaster tab is on the top of the chainstay, serial # is in the same location as 1st gens but is a different format (example: T 0384XX11 M). The stays taper substantially to the rear.

3rd Gen is Tiawan (Anlun) made and has the "Chevrons" in the headtube gusset, the coaster tab is on top of the rear chainstay and was beefed up a bit, the serial # is under the bottom bracket (example 8403XX55). The seatmast is higher on the 3rd gens to help from cracking at the base. The stays are tapered, but not as much as on the 2nd Gens. The stays are closed on the dropout ends.

The 3rd Gens basically were the final and strongest version and the basic design remained into '85 with the execption of the platforms on the rear and the tapered front forks and pegs.

All gens had machined headtubes and bottom brackets.

Hope this helps.

My 2nd gen '84 Master, I've had it since 1991. The fork is newer.

This is a 3rd gen survivor I got off the original owner a few miles from my house
