Anyone know where I can find new bearings for Redline 401's. I just sent the crank arms out to get re-chromed and ordered new chrome bolts/washers off ebay. The spindle is in good shape, but the cups/outer cups, lock nut, etc... could be replaced.
Any ideas?

Good Luck with that one. I suppose you know the difference between the thread sizes of most common bottom brackets. The older typically US made stuff uesd a 28TPI configuration(Astabula, Schwinn,Mongoose, Redline 401). Later, the 24 TPI type became more common as the Japanese parts kinda took over(Takagi, Sugino, SR). I haven't seen any distributors even carry a 28 TPI BB fopr a few years. Kinda got phased out.
Even a high quality 24 TPI is hard to come by.
To answer your question, I have had luck at old Schwinn dealers as of late. Since their bikes used the 28 TPI BB, same as the Redline, alot of shops still have old stock. Although it is becoming less common.
I also keep my eyes open for old Schwinn bikes at garage sales, etc. Only the US made ones, though. Sometimes a BB will be in decent shape on one. Good source for headsets, too.
Also Ebay has some come up from time to time. I would steer clear of the Tioga Bear trap. It is too wide for the 401 spindle.

Try to find a Tange or Mongoose BB for them. They are on ebay quite a bit. I've been using a Mongoose BB for 27 years. No problems.

Yeah the 28TPI BBs definitely do turn up on e:bay. I run a Tange one on my Flights.

If you can't find a 28TPI Goose or Tange BB set which work well for the early threaded flite spindles.
Matt & I both recommend the Hayes (or is it Hanes ?) sealed bearing BB they made bitd for 401's.
You could try to find one of those on Ebay or travel back in time , whichever is easier.
Matt still races our 1984 XL TA in the Vintage races we have here with single pinch flites & that slick sealed
oldskool BB setup.
