First off I want to say I know every father thinks there kid is the smartest, fastest, and all of that. He started riding about 6 weeks ago he has advanced riding really fast. Where we lived before there was nowhere to ride a bike so we did get one for him till now. He is addicted to riding his bike. My son is 4 he will be 5 the end of this month. In our housing complex there is a 7 foot tall quater pipe. Just for fun we were letting him make small turns at the base. In four days once a day for 20 to 30 mins he is getting close to breaking the lip of the ramp. My son is tall for a 5 year old 46 inches (3foot 10inchs) He has very good control and style but he cant bunny hop or wheelie very big. I need to know what to do should I let him continue or slow him down? He is riding a Eastern Dirtdigger I bought new for him it was a left over I got a good deal on. Please dont bash me on the bike I never thought he would take to riding like this. Thanks for any help. Oh I know not one thing about freestyle. When I was young we had bikes but no parks and BMX was only in Mags like bmx action.

What does your son think? Meaning what is his confidence level? I would let him explore the ramp but just make sure he is well protected so when he does bail he stands a chance of not hurting himself. That is great though your giving him the freedom to try it out!

Like I said I dont know much about this. He have very basic elbow and knee pads and a bike helmet. He will be getting a full face bike helmet this weekend for his Bday. I am getting some videos so we can watch together. Thanks for any help. He really wants to ride on a BMX track. There are 3 tracks with in 10 mins of our house. We wont let him do it yet because he is advancing so fast. When I say we I mean the wife! Do you guys like bmx full face helmets or motocross helmets? Im sorry to be such a newbie about this. This bike thing was just something to pass the time till we had the money for a pw50 dirtbike but he is riding so well Im in no hurry to get the pw50. I am a motocross/enduro guy so all of the bmx stuff is new to me. Thanks

A BMX full face would be lighter and cooler for him to wear. Like you I've done more MX riding in the past only now coming back to BMX. You picked a good place for advice. This site is full of great knowledgeable folks who are quite friendly and always willing to put in their 2 cents. Some kind of a chest protector might also be a good investment while he is learning and getting his skills down.

As a parent of 4, I say make sure he is padded up, wearing a full face, and let him at it!!! You might have the next Jamie Bestwick there. Let him progress at the rate that he feels comfortable at but keep an eye on him. Heck even better get yourself a bike, some gear, and ride with him on that ramp!

Thanks for the information. I am looking for a bike now. My family and I are living in Colombia South America. I am a big guy 6'3" 250lbs and there are no bikes down here for a guy my size I can find right now. Im still lookin though. Thanks

I agree pad him up, let him rip. If you have three tracks that close let him experience the racing side also.

If you didn't grow up on bmx bikes, and you're used to MX, then I would suggest going with 24" or 26" wheel bmx.

Check out:

VOLUME SLEDGEHAMMER 26" wheel bmx.
SE OM FLYER 26" bmx
Texas Fireman's Cruzer 26" bmx

We The People Avenue 24" bmx
FIT CR 24" bmx
SUNDAY Model C 24" bmx

Blackmarket MOB, Riot or 357 26" MTB-BMX - (you can run a rigid fork or swap to suspension fork if you want).
ATOMLAB Trailking MTB-BMX 26"
