BMX TEACHER
I don't know how many people are left around that remembers my dad, but those who do, I wanted to let all know about his passing. He has been sick for a while and this was expected.
For those who didn't know him, he was dedicated to making BMX better. He spent a lot of time at the tracks helping parents and riders understand BMX. He was into the science. He made things better. Made his own parts for my and sister's bikes. Later I will show some of this advanced science he produced. My name is Tommy Merryman and my sister is Kelly and we will miss our dad. Thank you for letting me share.

Wow, Tommy, that is bad news, indeed. Even when expected, when the moment is at hand, it is never easy. Condolences to you and Kelly, and your extended family.

Thank you for posting here on this most difficult day. Hopefully the warmth of your "other" family will help make this time more bearable.

Best,

Carruth Family (Mike, Lyn, Fiona, Jordan)

May God bless you and your sister, Tommy. Very tough to lose a parent. It doesn't go away for a long time.

I lost my mother in 2007 and I am only half of anything I was before that point.

You must remember your dad would want you to press on and fight against all the hard spots in life. Be strong in his memory.

Looking forward to seeing his contribution to our sport.

He sounds like he was a cool dude.

I was going to start a thread in BMX racing, but it is fitting that Doc is in the Vintage BMX racing category. Let me start by saying that my heart is out to the Merrymans. Doc meant more to BMX in Ohio and Michigan in the early 80's than I think any thread will do justice. His contributions to making the riders in MI and OH better are unparalleled. He truly had a passion for teaching the art of BMX. It was both a science and an art to Doc.

Personally, I owe a lot of credit to my success on the track to Doc Merryman (as is the case for a bunch of riders that I know throughout the 1980's and 90's). As Tommy mentioned he worked to make things better, but he always explained to the kids and the parents why he was doing it. He watched races (and racers) with a keen eye and would help them to best use their talents on the track... even if that meant that his own children would be competing against them. The epic battles between Melanie Cline and Kelly Merryman developed because of Doc.

It's funny now that I have my doctorate people sometimes call me 'doc' as a nickname and I always correct them. To me, there was only one Doc. May he rest in peace.

Tommy,

I remember your Dad from Crossroads.

Very sorry for your loss.

Tommy and Kelly, my condolences. Bmx Prof you did a great job putting into words of what Doc meant to BMX. He truly loved helping kids and BMX. His bikes were innovative and precision machines. May the man in the mechanics jumpsuit and little hat always live on in BMX lore and in our memories. RIP Doc Merryman.
