Full Version: Need Advice On PK Build

Hi all,

Noob here. Planning to do a retro new school PK build with the 2009 white/red frame and a majority of parts coming from coloretuffs.com. (Do they every return emails or answer the phone, BTW)? I've got most of the details down and am almost ready to order parts. Here's the one question I have:

I'm trying to avoid any parts that are not either red or white, but want to keep the retro look throughout. I've chosen white Profile cranks and am wondering what options I have in the way of retro chain rings....

There's this one that doesn't require a spider, but it doesn't look retro to me. Can anyone confirm?

The other option is to use the profile 5-spoke spider, but it's not available in red or white as far as I can tell:

Maybe if I powder coated the spider white to match the cranks, I could mate it with a ring such as this one (but in red):

Any thoughts or other ideas?

Thanks!

Ed at ColoredTuffs.com is a good guy, but he stays pretty busy though. Business, kids etc. Powder coat is definately an option. Ask around about powder coaters for your area. Probably best to get everything you'll want powdered done at the same time for best color match and price.

this is what mine looked like with the knight retro spider on it

I had the same debate with myself when building my retro Quad...I decided on the Profile Imperial on my Flights no less lol...not really retro, but they are trick billet goodness, and accented my other blue anno parts nicely !!

OK I picked up this NOS piece in 44T for $15 and will give it a go with the Profile 5-bolt spider that I'll try to get powder coated in white...

That doesn't look bad at all. I had also looked at the JW sprockets which are also pretty sweet...

I really wish S&M would bring the Motoman sprocket back into production.

Nothin' says retro like this...

Thanks, and I will do. I should post pics of my '81 or '82 Redline MXII also. Got it as a kid. But I forget which year it was. It needs a little restoration, and I'll get to that next. Always wanted Ripper back then, and the 2009 white frame with red decals just speaks to me!!

I'm sure you have a master plan for a color scheme, but sometimes I think two colors is a bit much -- when you add that third accent color, it's pretty sweet. So I would be tempted to go with the silver spider. And silver is a good, neutral accent. Then again, I would probably go with the red imperial sprocket overall. Have fun with the build!

Yea, I may just keep the silver spider, and use a nickel Izumi chain. I was starting to think that a red or white chain would be getting a little too over the top.

I like the red sprocket you have. I've been looking for a red 44t sprocket for ages. Great price too.

I got lucky and found it on Ebay. The same seller has a 45T one just like it, if you're willing to go with 45T.

I myself also used the Profile Imperial on my 07 P.K. build. I agree the style of the sprocket is'nt very retro, but it is anodized in many colors, which is something that is VERY hard to find in this age of all black bikes and slammed seat posts. Either way welcome to VBMX cheif, and good luck with your build.
