This has been discussed more than once i'm sure...But I am building a 24" Floval flyer and was wondering about a few gear options? I will be running 180mm cranks and my first thought was maybe 44x16?

What do you run on your cruisers and why?

Hey Chris. The answer to that question can vary wildly. It depends upon what type of track you're running, the size of your rear tire, whether your a spinner or a torker and your overall physical makeup. As I found out over the past twelve months, it's something only you can figure out, and you have to do so through trial and error. As a starting point, the norm for cruiser is 41/18. I'd suggest starting there.

For me, since I can't spin for crap (I'm an old fireplug of a human), I run 40/17 with 180mm cranks and a 1.75 tire. Even on short tracks where spinning seems the norm, I seem to do better with this ratio. But it took me a few months to figure that out.

Best of luck,

ya, i don't ride cruisers but from what i have gathered everyone seems to ride with an 17 or 18 f/w
w/ a 38-41 front sprocket as opposed to something with a ?-16 tooth gear ratio

can't tell you much more than that myself

Thanks for your input, I understand it can vary alot and I am willing to try a few ratios but I am just looking for a starting point. I want to run somewhere around 24x2.2 or so. I don't race so it will mostly be a bike path cruiser and I will hit the track occasionally for some different workout. Thanks

Ok let me try another question.
I am 37 5'8" 195lbs and a little on the mushy side(not alot, but I am working on trimming down). My kids are at the age to ride on the streets by themselves and I want to join them and feel kid like again and maybe even hit the track a few times.(not racing). What would be a good gear/crank size combo to go with?

I would go with 175mm 41/18 on the 24

I'll second that. This will give you the most flexibility in cruising around (won't take you an hour to get going but will let you spin a bit for some speed), and it will put you right in the mix with everyone else on the track.
