My 3 children seem to have a knack for picking up thorns(plus me occasionally). I am sick of changing tubes two or three times a week. What is the best flat protection program? I'm not too crazy about the thick thorn resistant tubes because they are so heavy, not crazy about the green goo or other goos because they are messy and a pain. What you all using?
I searched several forums here looking for this topic, to see if it has been covered before, no luck.

I change tires with goo in them all the time at the bike shop....so I vote thorn-resistant tubes.

Danscomp sells a tire liner that protects the tire from thorns. Either that or go with the Danscomp Trails tubes... they are more then three times as thick as the standard tubes, although a lot heavier.

They work great. They're a kevlar tape that goes between the tube and the tire. I like to get them a little bigger than the size of the tire (example: 1 3/8" for a 1 1/8 tire) that way you can protect a little of the side wall too. They are very light compared to both goo and heavy duty tubes. If I remember right they are about $40 for both tires.

I vote for thicker tubes or tire liners. Your kids aren't gonna notice the extra weight if it's an "everyday" bike. If it's their race bike, then get a second set of wheels and run regular tubes for racing and thick tubes for everyday riding. It might even be better training for them - kinda like swinging a bat with a weight on it.
The green stuff doesn't work that well - it just slows leaks down - and it's messy and stains everything it touches.

another vote for liners or thicker tubes.
my shop experience is probably about 90% failure rate for slime/goo - so much so that we stopped selling them/it at both the shops i've worked for since slime came out.

try Stan's no-tubes sealant in the tubes. Light weight and works as good as slime.
