My buddy John helped me install the wood floors in my house and while doing so, noticed all my BMX projects lying around and mentioned that he still had his old bike from back in the day. He went on to say that his father had bought he and his brother two Redlines in '78 so they could start racing. His brother had lost his but John's was sitting on the side of his house and was apparently in pretty bad shape. I told him that for helping me out with the floors, maybe I could clean it up for him. He kind of laughed and said "Sure, if you want to try."

Here it is minus the Tuffs, seat, & bars.

And then the final product minus a brake cable. I used parts that I had here at the shop and decided to put some new three piece cranks on for the bling. Era correct bashers are not allowed to comment tongue.gif , this build was for fun and to help a buddy out with the resources I had available.

And here's John when I surprised him with it.

Kurt.
Great job Brian - I bet he was stoked. You don't see many yellow MXIIs either. Nice work!
Cook Bros Seeker
Nice job. I had an MX II and III BITD. Loved those bikes.

Man, that is an awesome thing you did. You can tell by the pics that the rest of the guys are jealous. laugh.gif

Really cool that you could "clean up" your buddy's childhood bike. I'm sure it means a lot to him that it's his og bike and his friend did the resto job.

MadCowboy
Awesome! Nice job!

Sick stuff. I don't really venture over here very much from the New School forums but this is really rad.
Lonewolf
Hey man, can we be friends? That was awesome. We need to know what you did. Was it magic?
Awesome.
Lonewolf
Crisco, I think you are on to something with the jealousy. Or they think the whole thing is silly. A bike resto like that is anything but silly.

Way cool.

Well done sir!

Thanks for all the comments guys, I really appreciate it! This was really a fun build and it meant a lot to me that this was John's first BMX bike from BITD and we were bringing it back to life.

Lonewolf: Even though we've never met, I consider us friends since we share the same crazy hobby and meet here on this great site every day.

As for the friends in the picture: I think they were scratching their heads as to "What's the big deal? It's a kids bike??" My little hobby is lost on most of my friends, except those that had/or raced BMX BITD. I'm the one in the red hat over John's shoulder.

Now for the magic: The frame was in pretty bad shape but straight. I used my Dad's sandblaster, stripped the frame, and gave it to my brother-in-law who powdercoated it for me. He works at a high performance boat shop and is their mainline mechanic (you should see some of the engines he works on!). This was his first frame (definitely not his last if I have any say in it wink.gif ) and he did a great job matching and laying the yellow down.

I replaced the Tange forks (too much work to save) with some original Redline's. The Tuff's were in bad shape as well so I robbed a fresh set from one of my Hutch's (Tuff II's). I also bought a new set of Redline cranks to help set it off with some chrome. The rest of the parts I had lying around.

Here's what John helped me do.

That room is for football. The bike room is around the corner. wink.gif

awesome resto, and big props for doing that for a friend!

yeah, I've come across those that think its "silly", I usually point them to ebay to show them how "$illy" it really is. Most of the time silly turns to sick, (cause they threw it away!)

Thanks, that means a lot coming from you! Your builds are top notch and I still think your 24" Cook Bros is the baddest thing I've seen.

Wow, what a great story-thread.

You two are lucky to have a nice friendship like that!

enjoy it!

The red line looks great in yellow. As far as era correct, the cranks finsh that bike off nicely. Good job.
