Does anyone out there know where I can find a set of these 26' Motomags? They look absolutly awesome! I am guessing that they were custom made by someone. Please post or email any information.

Thank you,

Paul

I recall this had been discussed but I had not heard of any actually being built. The biggest issue was cost. I am curious to see if these are real.

They are real! I do not have a picture, but I was told the back rim had a Bendix coaster brake hub! Any info where I can buy a set for my KOS??

Material cost is significant. The round blanks for 16" size would be $100 each. Solid round is not made in sizes large enough for 20", much less 24" or 26". Therefore, you would need to start with plate stock, which means you are paying for and wasting the material in the 4 corners. My guess is $600+ for each piece, just for material.

The 24" and 26" sizes are beyond the typical Y-axis travel limits of 95% of the CNC machines out there. So now you're forced to do 4 setups instead of 2 to shift the part on each side (more time for setups), or hunt for a machine shop that has a larger CNC that can do 26"+ travel in the Y-axis. Of the 5% of machines out there that could do this in 1 setup, many of those CNC machines are older (i.e. slower), which results in longer run-times. Of the "modern" shops who are running a newer Haas VF-5 or larger, those in many cases are shops doing work for aircraft/aerospace or automotive, and are likely to charge, say, $100 to $120/hr. rather than $60 to $80/hr for work performed on those larger machines.

The net result: you could expect a realistic price of $4,000 to $5,000+/pair if you were to commission these to be made. Whoever made them either has deep pockets, connections, or both.

I remember seeing this a couple years back. Totally cool!

John,

Thank you for the great information, I was told that these rims could be obtained for less then half of what you said they would cost, still expensive, but considering what new cranks, pedals and stems are going for these days that would not be a bad deal! Do you have any idea who could be making them? Do you think that they are American made?

26" MotoMags. I'd love to build a retro style, Single Speed MTB with a set of those. or something.

I have no idea who would make them for $5,000, much less $2,500...or less. I know I wouldn't.

It's much easier to justify $5,000 wheels for a custom motorcycle compared to a custom bicycle.

I never rode Motomags in the old days but as a goof I put one on the front of my Kappa/GJS last year. It was so stiff it made the ride horrible, not to mention the weight of the dang thing. Sweet on a chopper, but I think they would look bizarre in 26 inch form and be unpleasant to ride with. Can you imagine getting a finger popped in there as that giant, winged aluminum behemoth spins around? Ha ha.

I am think putting those wheel with the blue retro 26' Mongoose that someone on here has made, would be like putting peanut butter with jelly!
I was told, that these rims are being made in a limited quantity and that they would cost less than $2500! They are going to be available with either a coaster brake or a free wheel.
They may be a little on the heavy side, but they are obviously for cruising and showing off rather than riding on a half pipe!
Does anyone have a picture of the custom blue 26' goose??

Here's the motorcycle version.

I sold my 396 Camaro a couple of years ago, I have a new GT 500 Shelby now, it is a lot of fun, but I still miss the Camaro.
In the last couple of years I have started playing around with BMX bikes again. I have had a couple of floval's PK's and a RRS. My current project is a 26' Mongoose to ride around the streets with my daughter.

Well this is 1 of 2 that were custom built a couple of years back. The owner is in Washington. It's one of the best 26"ers I have ever seen.

That is a sweet bike! Do you have a picture of the second one he built? I agree, that is one of the best 26' BMX bikes that I have ever seen.

I took that photo last weekend in Portland. Here's another:

WOW, that is a sweet ride! Are the rims a one off? They would look great on that KOS, but they would look awesome on the 26' goose!
Kurt.
Not a 26" Mongoose - but damn close in style (Oz built '82 Cyclops). I'd like some 26" Motomags for this!

Sodbuster
They do look cool I guess but I bet they roll like the Flintstone mobile. mellow.gif
