STANDARD BYKE COMPANY “BUILD YOUR DREAM FRAME” DESIGN COMPETITION

Have you ever wanted to “blend” the attributes of your favorite BMX bikes together (front end from one, middle section from another, and your own idea for an innovative rear end) to make the perfect “dream” frame? Well, one way or the other...here is your chance.

Standard Byke Company is giving VintageBMX.com Site Supporters the chance of a lifetime—to concept and realize their dream frame. Dream big, get picked, and you’ll be riding it before you know it.

TO ENTER: Develop a concept (you can use pencil & paper, CAD, or just describe it in this thread—illustrations or CAD highly preferred), and post it in this thread.

HOW THE WINNER IS CHOSEN: On September 1, six finalists will be chosen from all entries, and the community will vote on the best design to be produced from September 2 – 9.

SUBMISSIONS SHOULD INCLUDE:
Primary Purpose: Race, Freestyle, Flatland, Trails, etc.
Design Facets: Looptail, double diamond, etc.
Geometry: Top tube length, BB height and style, all tube sizes, angles, etc..
Finish: Color(s) or Chrome

ONE SUBMISSION PER MEMBER, PLEASE, so give it your best shot!

If you have any questions as to production constraints or shop capabilities, please address it in this thread.

Rules.

1. Real designs only. Nothing crazy like a lowrider tandem, or “science fiction-fantasy” concepts like a twisted square tube.

2. Winning design will be chosen based on originality, the design’s feasibility to go from sketch to steel, and the production capabilities of Standard Byke Co.'s shop.

3. Open to VINTAGEBMX.COM SITE SUPPORTERS only. Site supporters help keep Vintage going and growing, and it’s only $35yr.
Not a site supporter? Sign Up Here

4. Production will take 6-8 weeks from the date selected.

5. Winner picks the finish and/ or color(s) from the palette offered by Standard Byke Company.

6. One submission per member. Each submission can have two additional revisions before the September 1 Deadline. The latest revision is the one that will be considered by the judges.

Here is my post

Due to the SBC - SACRED BROTHERHOOD OF THE COBRA

I would start with the classic SBC 125, then at the head tube, I would do 2 1980's style gussets(LIKE ON OUR CUSTOM 26'' IN THE SHOP) , with just a "R" cut out in them. In the back where the old 80's bikes had the brake bridge, like where it said (hutch) exc. I would have lazer cut out of steel the letters SVT and welded in there as a brace and for looks. Bike would be done in Ford 1993 Cobra red. 1993 cobra emblem decals on the bike, the rear deck lid decals on the down tubes, 5.0 in chrome on the top tube. With the SBC cobra decal on the seat tube. Ford oval emblem decals on the forks, but with SBC and not ford in them. may have the drop outs redone with another design in them, who knows.

All of this since I am a ford guy, and a Mustang Cobra lover. and where do you think the SBC cobra came from.

Stay true to the COBRA!!!!!

Pics later I am at work so i cant post pics!!!!!

Nothing crazy, just my dream bike or one of them!!!!

BUILD 3 OF EACH NORMAL COBRA BIKES IN RED, TEAL AND BLACK, AND DO THIS 1 ® MODEL LIKE FORD FOR A LIMITED RUN? HMMMMMMM

*Polished neck with iron cross logo on top

*Chrome hoops

*Polished Bullseye hubs

*Handmade leather seat with Standard S logo

*Chrome cranks

*Chrome Bullseye pedals

And

Painted like this

Headtube gusset like this:

Red and white old school pinstriping here and there, "Standard Chongo Blanco" on downtube
nvmyslowride
Very cool, I love that style
knowayback
Bloody'ell, so exited about this comp!
I've wanted a custom Standard for so damn long....
Can't imagine i'd win cos my dream frame really isn't that creative, but what the hell; tis worth a go.
Basically what I dream of (literally sometimes!) is a XXXL STA frame cos i'm 6'6".

Primary Purpose:
Freestyle - primarily street

Design Facets:
Pierced top tube STA style design
Triple gusset!
True Temper OX Platinum tubing (of course!)
Integrated & SBC engraved head tube
Mid BB
No brake mounts, cable guides or gyro holes

Geometry:
Head tube angle: 74.5
Head tube length: 5"
Top tube length: 22-3/8" (center to center)
Top tube OD: 1-5/8"
Down tube OD: 1-3/4"
Seat tube angle: 71
Seat tube height: 9-3/8" (center to center)
Seat post size: 25.4mm
BB height: 11-5/8" Mid
Chain stay length: 14-3/8" (slammed) - 14-7/8"
Chain stay OD: 1" tapered to 7/8"
Seat stay OD: 7/8"
Dropouts: 1/4" thick for 14mm axles

Finish:
Gunmetal Grey

As I say; pretty unoriginal apart from the dimensions, but as far as i'm concerned Standards are dialled enough as they are.
I'd just love a frame by my favorite company, scaled up to fit a giant sized rider.

Pretty much gonna have my fingers crossed till the 1st September!
nvmyslowride
Just to let people know, product does NOT have to be Standard products.

Im still waiting for someone to break out the idea of a custom 26'' thruster tri-bar with some wicked stuff designed on the frame, crazy 80's retro, or something crazy like that, it is about all bikes, and I dont want people to think its just standard items you have to post, but to those Standard posts, thank you and they are always welcome!!!! And so far, pretty cool, keep the ideas coming!!!!!

EXACTLY!!!
Greg_Hanna
Heres how I see it (I can't do CAD or draw a straight line).

The top tube would be two tubes butted together welded down the middle. They would pierce the headtube and be finished in front of the headtube like a sawed off shotgun. At the seat tube, the dual top tube would pierce or or continue around the seat tube, transitioning into the seat stays (maybe tapering into smaller dia tubing).

The down tube would just be oversized and ovalized Sting/Judge style at the headtube and BB.

The rear triangle and dropouts would be Thruster style. Dropouts need not be crazy
thick.

Integrated headset and Euro BB.

Same geometry as a 1992/93 Elf Double Cross Pro size 20".

Finished in Gun blueing or Shotgun Black.

Call it the Sawdoff or Shotgun.

Greg Hanna, that is some gangster shite.

I love it.

But, If I get my dream cruiser, then my wife can use the smaller SBC cruiser I currently use... Decision made. Now off to take CAD classes...

First I would like you to use proprietary forming technology's 3al/2.5v titanium

Head tube 5in flared

Down tube orbital geometrically enhanced tubing , slight flair on bottom at head tude
connection, and at BB connection

Top tube enhanced diamond shaped (pft)arched 2 degree's in center of lenth . 21.5 in
flared ends

Seat tube round for good contact points (big enough for other tubes to intersect)

Chain stays teardrop(GET) 15.7 in v-shaped gusset behind bb

BB 11.8 high ub230 (cannondale-Diamonback)

Drop outs like the Haro with chain adjustment bolts built in .

Steering angle 74 degree's

Seat tube angle 71 degree's

I have to get back to you on the parts !

iTS QUITE IN HERE, WHO IS WORKING ON THERE DESIGN?
Stoneking522
well since Rick already builds up the best frames how could I change it? Hell I guess I'd give him my gear ratio tell him to have the rear wheel slammed to the front. Make my frame just a little bit stiffer which we have talked about anyways and do some really cool color combo. everybody and there mother seems to have black or red or something along those lines. sorry no ideas really. I just really like a simple design that works. to me there's no reason to try to reinvent the wheel. Rick, Jessie, and the rest of the guys at Standard make great frames everyday, and I'm glad to be part of his team and even more greatfull that I can call him a friend as well.
nvmyslowride
Mikey,

I know a place in mommoth that does the best craziest powder jobs have ever seen. We need to get the bikes sent there. he has like 1000 colors in stock. there nuts. We can get you something done for sure. May cost a few bucks extra.

I want someone to do a cool bike, so I can send it to sedlock and have someone do a real evil knevil tribute bike since he painted evil's bikes and helmets, and not a cheap hoffman knockoff, a real deal!!! all airbrushed frame!! How cool would that be? and he lives 5 mins from us!!!!

Unfortunately i can't afford to support at the moment.
Guess i'll be sticking with my deuce deuce untill i can afford to make my dreams out of OX platinum.....
JiveHandle
I don't have any ideas for an entire frame, but I'd love to see someone design a frame with copper plated finish -or- engraved/etched designs in the tubing, if that's possible.

I'll draw the frame tomorrow , too tired from riding right now .
smile.gif No cad ,free-hand . Been checking out how this chick does something simular to anodizing with Ti frames , her finish products looks wild . I do realize it would cost an un-realistic amount to tool up for this frame build but you (standard) did say Dream Frame . So thats what this is . Good nite gonna go dream some more .
n2o
Okay, no drawing or CAD for me either, sorry. Here's my idea:

It would be a looptail frame, as close to the oldschool looptail PK Ripper rear end as possible. The seatstay tubes would continue to the headtube, making it a Torker twin top tube frame. You could weld the "plate" at the seatpost tube exactly like the Torkers were for strength and support, as well as small plates between the top tubes, exactly as Torker did. If added support was needed at the headtube (NO Torker headtube gusset if possible), I would like a small plate on top of the twin top tubes at the point where the twin top tubes meet the head tube, but the edge of the plate facing back towards the seat should be arched in towards the head tube, as opposed to just being straight. I would use a standard round tubing for the down tube, ending with a european BB. This would be a race frame, but just like the old Torkers, it could also be a freestyle frame. I'd prefer it to be a 24" frame but a 20" would be cool too. The basic geometry and top tube lengths from the Kappa "K" frames should be applied to these frames, as I always thought the Kappas rode great.

I'm not sure if this design is structurally possible, but it would look cool in chrome or white!
IronHide
I'm throwing my stake in the ground now, but this is still a work in progress. I'm rethinking the gussets and seat clamp arrangement. Maybe going with some laser or water jet cut plates vs tubes for gussets.

19" TT
13" CS
11.75" Mid BB
70 degree seat tube
74.5 degree head tube
Removable break hardware
Integrated head tube
1" seat post
14mm drop outs (5mm thick)

Gary,
your always dreaming up ways to better, already cool bikes.
I love this RL20II re-design.
I want one!

nvmyslowride
it is super cool, come on people design! it dont have to be CAD to win!!!!!!!!!!!

UNIQUE BRING IT!!!!!
4130_nasa
Throwing mine out there... This one has the influences of old dead bikes as well. cool.gif

nvmyslowride
SUPER DOPE!!!!
RCain
My dream machine would be a 24" race version of an early 70's Rollfast "Scoot" Cro-mo with modern (125RC) geometry and a looptail rearend. 1 1/8 headset, euro bb, and canti's
Strictly badass.

n2o
I'm seeing a trend here with the twin top tube ideas...... biggrin.gif
Scottbronxton

My dream O/S influenced ride would be a Hutch backend(with smaller thicker dropouts) with a 250s (copied 250 angles + tubes - no need to re-invent the wheel) frontend 21" toptube - or maybe 21.5". Mid BB + int headset

Mostly for trails & parks - guess you could do a lighter version for race.
Gary Mason WWR
Twin top tubes flex and will break on big hits .

Heres a simple drawing

GR8BNDINI
Like others before me, I cant draw, would'nt know how to use cad if I did have access to it. So here is my best description of my dream frame.

First things first she's a 24" for racing. (actually just cruising around and looking cool)

Specs and geometry.

Top tube length 22"

Heat tube angle 73.5 degrees

Seat tube 72 degrees, 27.2mm (I could be flexible on diameter if need be)

Chainstay length 15.5"

Bottom bracket heigth 12", American bb of course.

With all that out of the way I'm going to do my best to describe her from front to back. Basically I just want to take design elements and styling from my most faved and put them into one frame.

First, integrated head tube with that super sweet cursive Standard logo engraved into it, man thats just sweet.

Next is a great big, fat, honking down tube like a Nomura.

Top tube that extends past the seat mast, with a cap stamped SBC, and seatstays welded to it, and integrated post clamp, like a JMC.

I want the two plates welded in back of the bb with holes in them like a Patterson.

Then of course a loop tail, with diamond shaped dropouts like the older rare P.K.'s, and chain tensioners built into the loop like a Cook Bros.

A gussett welded at the bb, seat mast, down tube area, like a Race Inc.

And a good ol' Made in the USA plate welded to the seat mast, like a Robinson.

And finally finished in anti-freeze green.

I realize she IS going to heavy as an old Cadillac, but I dont care, it WILL be the baddest cruiser on the block.
