I know, we are doing it to help support the site, and I know alot of people are down on there luck right now with no jobs and cant afford to join, but you never know. If this goes well, maybe we will do a all members one or some kind of other contest. With SBC on the loose, you never know what may happen next so beware!! hahahaha. What a bunch of hooligans!

Thanks all!!!

So far so good

My dream STANDARD is a normal STA with the exception of a 2" downtube. I was told the largest you all could do was a 1 5/8" downtube. So that is my 'dream' Standard STA since it's not available wink.gif

Oh, and it has to be white with baby blue stickers. That's all.

I've been going to "get around to" becoming a site support for a while now. Since going to Rockford for the first time this year. This thread got me actually do it. All I have to do is narrow my dream bike down to just one bike. More to come ...

DREAM BIG, AND THANKS FOR JOINING!

My dream machine would be a 24" race version of an early 70's Rollfast "Scoot" Cro-mo with modern (125RC) geometry and a looptail rearend. 1 1/8 headset, euro bb, and canti's
Strictly badass.

I was going to maybe run the gauntlet and post something up, and I still may. There are plenty of good ideas, descriptions and great executions, but the more I think about it, Cains rollfast idea really floats my boat. Not so much to see a looptail, but to see some slammed banana seats actually racing would be a hoot.

I love that bike of his.

Also, I never thought it could work so well, but by giving a description, it's like the best form of cad (The reader's imagination). From an objective viewpoint I have not found any ideas lacking.

Everybody's stuff sounds and looks pretty cool.
nvmyslowride
Alot of neat and unique ideas, but keep them coming, we need alot more!!!!

My dream frame is a 70's retro inspired, chromoly race frame with new school (125R) geometry. WARNING: If you build my frame, a big fat guy is gonna ride like a rented mule. I see it as a 20" but it could fly as a 24". To me 70's means very big gussetts. I'm thinking like Mongoose Motomag but instead of just a round hole, the Standard "S" logo. American bottom bracket for flat black, one piece (Ashtabula) cranks. I'm not too picky on how the rear triangle is laid out but it's gotta have a coaster brake mount. Old fashioned type on the chainstay. No v-brake or 990 mounts. I think a plate style (caliper) brake bridge with the script "Standard" logo ingraved in it would be really cool. I plan on Tuffs with a coaster brake so the brake bridge is just in case.

You said to "dream big" so here's the big part. Ashtabula style, flat blade fork with 1 1/8 threadless steerer. I don't even know if that's possible, especially for a big guy. If anybody can do it, you guys have got to be it. If the fork doesn't fly a flat black tubular fork will work too.

A good 70's retro color is a glossy pumpkin orange for the frame and flat black for the fork.

That's about it. Thanks for a great opportunity. It's really great to see what everyone else is intersted in.

Thanks, Dan

Another very cool idea!!!! wink.gif
ANT DOG 3:16
I can still remember the "good old days" Joe rich & luck-E coming to RAMPERTIA in jersey(south plainfield) I had no idea the company would become a powerhouse. Rick you are a hero in my book. You stuck it out.

Should be open to all members (imo) But this is mikes site, So I respect what he is doing. Hope to see some cool designs.

After some thought I figured I would speak. In my first quote I said How I respect rick for sticking it out. And I still do. But I can't phantom why you would have to be a site supporter. Standard has been kept alive because of it's reputation. And quality. biggrin.gif

My 2nd quote, I still believe that it should be open to all members. After all how many non supporters- are jumping at the chance but can't afford to do it? At the end of the day people are still gonna buy standards & support vintage.

I am stating my personal opinion. I do not know if their are inside deals. But I just think if it were made to all, the results would be even better than what you expect.

nvmyslowride
I understand your point. let me make a few emails and see what they have to say to open members having a shot!!

Thanks

Nick

ANTDOG is 100% right.what the flip. people lost where they came from and all they see are $$$$?
rick is one of THE best hands down.but not going to let anyone in on the contest, thats retarted.
stupid if you ask me.i was going to buy the new flatland frame.but when i saw the price tag,i changed my mind.don't want to hear the sales pitch about this and that.now days people are loosing jobs, houses, automobiles, etc.WE NEED a company that will design killer frames forks and parts without doing a second mortgage on their house.
finallyracing
I mentioned my idea to you about two months ago and I would LOVE to see it happen. A chromed out Thruster Tri-Bar 26" with that wicked rear end.

22" Top Tube.
Euro Bottom Bracket
Headtube angled for racing. Oh yeah, I'm dumb enough to put this baby on the track!
Short rear tri.
Short BB height. (Long seat tube, I think.) I need a lot of leg room.
Did I mention all chromed out?
Plus, 1.5 hole chrome forks to go with this awesome frame.
Can anyone say "Rockford 2010?"
I'll get with you on angle specifics later but this is THE build of my dreams. Let's do it!!!

Oh, and the bars. Don't forget those awesome Thruster bars! I'll even pay out of pocket for some of those bad boys!

I assume that, by "people," you're talking about me, right? I mean if you have something to say, say it, you know?

To suggest that I'm over here rubbing my hands together, counting the few $35 donations that come in, you'd be kidding yourself in a major way. Out of nearly 20,000 members, fewer than one half of one percent are Site Supporters.

So, when the opportunity arises to make their donation a little more special, by providing cool events like our Site Supporter Breakfast at Rockford, or this contest, I make no apologies for having their proverbial backs. The intent of making this contest for Site Supporters was to reward their contribution, not necessarily require people to join (but thanks to those who have). In retrospect, we should have just done it in a private forum open only to members of the Site Supporter Group.

Even if I were inclined to change the rules for the contest (which I am not), it would not be fair to change them midstream.

This is the first, of what I am sure will be many promotions we'll be doing with advertisers like SBC. Some will be open to Site Supporters only, and some will be open to all members.

It should be noted that making it a Site Supporter only contest was my idea, and should not reflect poorly on them. But under the "no good deed goes unpunished" statute, I'm sure they'll take some flack for simply waking up in the morning.

Contrary to altruistic fantasy, running this site isn't free. And, even though being a Site Supporter amounts to only $2.91 per month, the donations help a lot in covering expenses like hosting, upgraded software, and the plans we want to see realized in the future.

The bigger question is: why is it that some are not willing to forgo a cup of coffee, or a single longneck each month to help a site on which they spend so much time? I think I know. It is the all-grown-up version of the kids who asked for a ride to the races every weekend, but never offered up a nickle of gas money. (incidentally, I would use direct language here, but I am addressing a multitude). Certainly, those out of work, or experiencing other hardship are not included in this group.

With all that said, let me take a moment to say "Thank you to the Site Supporters of VintageBMX.com!"
Please understand that it is not only a title under your name, it is a BIG statement on your part, and I *SO* appreciate that statement!

Best,

M

P.S. I'm locking this thread for 12 hours, because I do not want it muddied up with a debate about Site Supporter status. If you want to reply to the above, feel free to do so...but do it in the Site-Related Technical Support forum. Fair warning, though, that if you choose to wait for the thread to be unlocked, and post an off-topic response anyway, it will be summarily deleted.

To all on here who are upset that it is a site supporter contest, I am sorry. When i joined up I was low on money also, still am today, but like after post 10 or 20 I loved what i saw and joined up anyway, and met some really cool people, and made some great friends, and talked to a few icons I thought I would never talk too. But due to the economy I understand why people are upset about this contest. Just remember this. SBC is doing this to support a site which it seems everyone loves and enjoys, and like me, I notice a lot of you on all hours, it is addictive!!

SBC is also donating their time to build you a one of a kind frame. Rick is giving up many man hours of labor to design the bike, make the materials, pay his head guy to build and design, pay for powdercoat and stuff like that, all out of pocket! Lets say his shop rate is $50hr and it takes 30 hours to design and build your bike, thats $1500. Not to mention SBC pays for advertising here. BMX is a cut throat world and there is little mark up in a lot of BMX items, so most do it for the love and passion of BMX and not to get RICH!!

Everything SBC you seen on here is from me and Rick, and Sean M. We do this after hours. I have countless hours of my own time in getting you guys pictures, making cool threads, answering questions at home and at my paying job (shhhh). I even talk to some of you on my personal phone. I DO NOT GET PAYED FOR THIS. I do it for the love and passion of BMX and for you guys. I am ready to have my first child, and if you read in my post, I will have my laptop there in the hospital to answer question and updated pics, if that is not dedication, what is. And it is not for Just me, ITS ALL FOR YOU..

So now between Mike, Me, and SBC I hope you understand. This is contest # 1. There could be many more. Don't spoil it for all. Good things happen to people who are patient!!!

Thanks

Nick

You make some excellent points. I'll be a site supporter.
nvmyslowride
To all who has joined to either support the site, or to post at this contest. id like to say thank you. Id love to see more contest like this from other companys and give more people chances. Maybe this will start a fun trend of contest and really make this site rock even more then it already does!!! Maybe a contest where every BIG COMPANY site supporter donates a part or 2 and we can do a contest for a complete FULLY DECKED OUT bike? Stuff like that!!!!!

Thanks

Nick

Is the submission time up? I just sent you a PM as to my submission. I'm hoping to have it ready tonight.
nvmyslowride
No sir, you still have time, I really want to extend it another month! I will have to ask Mike!!!

IF IT WOULD BE OK WITH MIKE, ID LIKE TO START WORKING ON NEW DONATIONS AND GET A BIKE TOGETHER. COULD BE ANY BRAND, AND START LOOKING FOR PARTS, EXC....

Just a test run.
nvmyslowride
i LOVE THAT BIKE, NEED A BETTER PICTURE!
Lonewolf
Lonewolf
It's compressed 95%, so you must click it to really see it.

Fire away.

Comments welcome. -I think.

Geometry is the typical, new school xxl race. 74, 71, 21.75" tt, typical 125R bb height, 14.5-15.5 chain stay.

I really hope you guys like it.

If it needs to be explained, I will.

I am of the old school, but I enjoy new school design as much as anyone.

I took interesting influences from several bikes and here is the list:

Hutch/JMC (ubiquitous looptail)- I'm not so much into loops like a lot of people here, so it's giving a nod to the very name of this website. - Old school flair.

Intense (general loose interpretation of the top tube profile) I'm not too big on Intense, either but I know they are great bikes and I always loved old man Toby.

Schwinn Stingray (In this case it's a twin wishbone sweeping downward to a point on the down tube and a wishbone at the head tube coming to a point at the seat tube.)

Haro sx comp (upsweep on rear of the top tube) Lowered rear triangle height necessitated a higher connection to the seat tube, plus I think the Haro SX Comp is one of the prettiest frames ever done.

Eastern Grim Reaper Ti (Holes in frame) Another High end bicycle frame which removed material for added lightness. Since I imagine this frame in steel, the holes are actually bridged through the frame as a solid tunnel, adding more complexity than necessary, probably more weight than necessary, but would introduce interesting lateral tubing flex behavior, with the hopeful outcome of stiffening the rear of the frame for better power transfer (negated by simple rear dropouts, obviously). Maybe I should throw some 3D at the drops.

Ducati (trellis element of the top tube) I thought: "What would make this look like an exotic?" Well, if you fall back on what you know to be exotic, and having been an owner of one in the past, I threw in one of the most defining elements of one of the most exotic motorcycle marquis' -A trellis perimeter frame element, using extremely thin walled tubing and small diameter where, as a whole, should be strong in a compressive capacity. When you land you are putting compressive forces on the top of the frame. The color red penetrates through the colors gray and black, in a zig zag, all the way to the head tube which further delineates the trellis element/ exotic nature of this frame. Not intended as simple.

Ferrari (medium camel leather saddle against red seat underpinnings, post, clamp and frame. A "red out" contrasted with camel toned leather. This color combination was used in virtually every Ferrari factory racer from 1948 ( Tipo 125) through the 70's (P3/P4), an on. Just a personal thing for me.

Maserati "Birdcage" (More influence of a visible steel perimeter frame) as relates to something exotic.

I like black, but If I'm forced to go with a color it's blue. Otherwise, for exotic impact, it's red.

Red, certainly not my color, but I wouldn't mind having this rig in red!

Yes, the rear pseudo brake bridge is a bottle opener! I had to put that on there.

Exotic is not often a term associated with the world of BMX. You have High end builders SBC certainly being one, but we don't have Ferrari producing BMX equipment.

What if we did? What would it look like?
THIS is what I intended to explore with this frame.
Criscobath
My dream frame (pardon my lack of drawing, cad, or photoshop ability) would be a 26" frame w/ 21" tt, old direct link style chain stays, seat stays, and drop outs, VDC style pierced head tube, and American bb.
Lonewolf
Bump.
nvmyslowride
Kinda slow in here for a cool contest!!!!!
4130_nasa
Dang Lonewolf...

spend the weekend drawing bikes or something?

Looks and sound good. (especially the bottle opener)

I like.

nvmyslowride
That is sweet!
Lonewolf
Thanks guys. It was actually posted I think Friday night. I wish it had only taken me the weekend. I've been working on that for days and days and must have over 20 hours in it.

I got pissed that no one was paying attention to this thread ( my work), so I bumped it.

It makes me glad that you guys like it. I would let it be known that I like most everyone else's stuff, very much, as well. Even the guy's who have no illustration.

If I could, I would try to draw everyone's design for them, but it is so time consuming that I would be an old man, or at least out of beer, by the time I was done.

I have 4 beers today and I feel like I'm at McDonald's because I'm lovin' it!

...Right, how many times have we sat around waiting on a 'bike design contest' like this...? scratch_one-s_head.gif
And everybody has responsibilities. The ones that can't be ignored... and yet another week/weekend goes by. wacko2.gif

Here is the start of mine. I still have a fair amount to do. It's a cruiser, using the same geometry as the 125RC. It's a little tough to tell maybe, but, the lower tube(s) are 1 continuous tube.

Dude, you have a very interesting design and it's very expressive given your inventive approach.

There is a distant likely hood I would have gone with the bottle opener, but you absolutely made me have to do it!!!

Good stuff.
ufoDziner
Lonewolf,
I like your design, I don't think I get the top though. The way it looks to me it would be very flexible. Maybe it's just because I haven't ridden a bike with anything like that. Very nice design I must say. An attention getter for sure.

Well you didn't read my write up. It's okay. It was a long write up. What you aren't seeing from the side elevation is that there aren't two top tubes there are two horizontally opposed wishbones which straddle the head tube and seat tube.

I am working on an isometric view and it'll be ready in a day or so.

There is a lot more going on than what you are seeing.

Think crane boom, and you would be close.

Thanks for the good words. The Isometric view is dramatic.

Comments are welcome as long as they are good! smile.gif

Ufo, I'm diggin' the single tube action!
ufoDziner
No, I read it. Just didn't quite get it from what I read. I understand a bit more now. I'm interested to see the iso.

Thanks for the compliment. I hope I have the time to finish my model. When/if I do, I'll put up a 3d pdf. They make it quite easy to see everything. I like the old Redline top tube wrap, which is what got me thinking about doing it. I also thought it would be sort of slingshot-ish with the smaller bottom tubes, and Morales-ey with the tubes under the bb. Looptail for fun.
