Hi all,
Ryan took a pretty nasty fall in his 1/4s today and had to be taken to the med tent. After being looked at by the medics and the team doc it was decided to take him to the emergency room because he wasn't perking up like he was supposed to and also because his blood pressure was running low. On the way to the hospital his blood pressure continued to drop and they had a team of folks waiting there for us when we got there.
As some of you are well aware, it is very difficult to see your son or daughter get hurt and have to be taken to the hospital, but it is especially so when you are in a different country and sometimes they call things different then they do in the states. Apparently they call a triage room a resuscitation room...resuscitation...that scared me to death. After they stablized him they did numerous tests and determined that he had ruptured his spleen. They said that on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the worst his is a 4. Apparently very similar to what Conman experienced in Desoto. The good news is that it looks like he will keep his spleen but he is currently immobilized for the next 2 days and then it will be another 6-10 days before he can get up and around. Looks like our stay here in Adelaide just got a little longer.
He is my only son and he along with my daughter are the two most important people in my life and to see him go through this was by far the scariest thing I have ever gone through. It took everything I had to stay strong for him throughout this but it was his strength that got me through this. With all of the tests and poking and proding he kept his sense of humor and his composure which is more then I can say for Dad. He is a rock and I am so proud of him on and off the track. He is still my little boy and always will be.
I can't say enough about all of the USAC staff, coaches and team Doc along with all of the other BMXers here in Adelaide and online who have helped him or asked about him. You are the reason why we do BMX! The team of folks at the Womens and Childrens Hospital here in Adelaide did a great job keeping me informed the whole way and let me stay next to him through every test. I filled out 1 piece of paper with his name date of birth and address and thats it. Everyone here gets the same medical attention regardless of insurance or anything. Don't get me wrong I'm sure they will be looking to get paid for it, but it has been truly secondary to treating him. I am glad that USAC made everyone buy the travelmed insurance, it is money well spent.
The only things he said to me about today was that he was pissed that he wrecked while in qualifying position and that he won't get to see the elites run tomorrow. He told me that I had to write the blog tonight and post the videos, but this post is all I can muster at this point.
Thank you to all of you who came to the hospital, called me, or expressed concern online or over twitter, it is truly appreciated. Please keep Ryan in your thoughts and prayers.
Tom Goderre (Proud Father)
Tom, from all of us at Aggro, we wish Ryan and your family the best. That's very scary, and we're thinking of you.

Man, Tom...that is the toughest of tough breaks. As I was watching the Twitter updates, and it seemed something was wrong, I became very nervous. I went to sleep soon after, but with the "How's Ryan" question unanswered, it was tough. So much so that Ryan was my first thought when I opened my eyes this morning.
I am glad he is OK and in good spirits. Please let him know he has about 300 million people back here praying for him and cheering him on to a speedy return to the States...and to the gate!
Best,
M

Yo Tom and Ryan,
Having just been through that "terrified dad/good humored kid" thing, I can only tell you that I am on the verge of tears knowing what you just went through. I am relieved he is OK and not surprised about his good spirits. That feeling is best summed up as despair and helplessness.
I know this isn't the extended trip to Australia you had in mind, but it sounds like you're in good hands and I suspect you might be getting better care than many places back here. Plus, being a Yank and all, he's likely a celebrity.

When you're back, I am sure Conman can share some thoughts and advice about how to keep from losing your mind waiting for an organ to heal in a wet chest cavity! Seems like forever but should be right about 4 months.
THanks for all you guys do for us and our thoughts and prayers are certainly with you for a safe trip home and speedy recovery.
XOXO

Tom,
So sorry to hear about Ryan. Like Mike stated it was absolutly great having you update us all. We were all following and posting. The excitement for our riders was huge on her last night.
When you said Ryan fell we were all concerned. I'm sorry he's injured but Aussie hospitals are some of the best. Having been there myself along with my husband living over there for a year playing Rugby we have had our fair share of visits.
Keep us posted thoughtout your now extended stay and our thoughts and prayers go with you.

Tom & Ryan are two of my favorite people & know you are in our thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery. I just wish I could be there to help in some way.
Tom, I just figured out why we became such fast friends through this board as I read your post. WIth all of the drama & bad feelings amongst so many people in the past weeks & months, I am focusing on sitting up until 3am cheering for all of the kids (both young & old) & crying for heartbreaks & now this...we are so very lucky to have each other whether its at the local track or across the world & we need to remember that instead of tearing each other apart. BMX unites us in a very special way that only those of us who are lucky enough to be a part of it can ever understand.
Be proud Ryan, and we will be anxiously awaiting your return.

I wanted to take a moment and express my family’s well wishes to Ryan and Tom. We hope for a speedy recovery and a speedy return home for you both. As with most of the Vintage Crew, we were following Tom’s tweets on the races. It sounded like Ryan was representing the USA very well positioning himself in a transfer position to go to the semis, (remember Ryan is the 16 boys US champ.) As pointed out by Tom, this is a bit of “salt in the wound”. If possible, this makes me feel even worse about the situation!
On a side note, my son, as well as our family has been fortunate to get to know Ryan and Tom here in the valley over the past year. We moved to Gilbert AZ approx one year ago were Ryan and my son Teagon have become good friends, making the move for my son much easier. Both son and dad are top notch in the Overman’s book and are examples for what is best about BMX. Our thoughts, well wishes, and prayers to you both on the otherside of the planet!

All,
Thank you for all the well wishes thoughts and prayers. Ryan is out of ICU and in a normal bed now. The doc came in yesterday and told us to be prepared for a month being here. He said it could be as quick as 2 weeks, but we should mentally prepare for a month. My wife is taking her first trip overseas and should be here mid week, and then I will be heading back to the states while she is here with Ryan. She is mich better equipped then I am to deal with all of the medical stuff being a nurse. He is healing up fine and thanks to Justin Dyar got to see all of the videos from yesterdays elite races which made his day.
You have all been great and I know it has helped his spirits seeing all of the support. Thank you for that.

Tom & Ryan,
Well wishes for a speedy recovery. My heart sunk when I heard Ryan was hurt and to this extent.

He is my gate partner at the local track and a great inspiration. He is a strong and determined young man and most of all a class act. Tom, Ryan and your entire family will be in my thoughts and prayers. Take care " Pickle " and we will see you soon !

I just posted a comment to Tom's last post. I feel so bad for Ryan. Let's keep the comments coming on Ryan's site as I know his family is loving the outpour from the BMX community.
Good on Connor and Mike Fields for throwing out their knowledge of Ryan's injury to them.
