Full Version: Titanium seat and post?

I got an 89 Elf the other day and it had a titanium post and the seat said titanium on it too. Were these a combo set? Whats titanium about the seat? The rails? Who made em? The elf they were on had all high end parts and set up for an expert sized rider, but the seat almost looks too big for it. Id have thought they would have gone with a uni seat for weight savings but since it had flight cranks, i guess it was a larger expert sized rider.

Im just curious about the seat and post. I've never seen either of them before.

I thought i had better pics of it than I do. Ill post a better pic in a little bit.

the seat looks like a odyssey svelte ti. the only seatpost i have heard of BITD that was Ti in a simple design without built-on seat guts like that was Brand X. but i also wonder if was possible for someone to just get a hold of say a military stock ti pipe with correct diameter and maybe cut it down a little and use that...? i dunno that one might be a far stretch of my imagination but it seems plausible. i think the brand X ones were stamped with their logo, so it seems that probably does not, or else you would have seen that.

I was thinking the same thing about the post. I didnt see any stampings on it but ill check again in a second. My wife just got home with her camera and i can take some good pics of it.

The post is slightly bent also. Titanium bike components werent always the strongest. Seems like every titan bitd had been rewelded at one time.

Definately not like my brand x it has a fixed alu. seat clamp and x logo.

I made about 20 ti posts back in the day. Old military stock that I bought. Simple design with smaller diameter piece, welded at top, for basic seat guts. Sold em for $20 each! No markings or stamps. Still have some of the old military stock in the garage!

The seat is a Selle Itali Flite saddle. The said Titantium down the side like that. Look on the under side it should say Selle Italia and have a cirlcle with a number in the middle which is the date code from selle italia. Post I have no idea.

You are correct about the seat nbl...after further review, i found the logo on it. No stampings on the seat tube so it probably home made. thanks for the help.

Correctiion:

Flite seats do no have the circle date stamp like The Selle Italia Turbos do. I pulled my Flite seat out last night and the date stamping changed between the two models. Mine has the numbers on each side of the center ridge in the smooth section on each side of the Selle Italia logo. 09 on the left side and 89 on the right side.

My seat base is exactly the same as yours other wise, so they may have stopped stamping them at some point or yours just didn't get stamped.
