Went to Hawaii for 2 weeks, had a great time. Took my DH bike, got to ride 6 times on some excellent DH trails.
Also went out fishing, on a boat docked at Ala Moana.
Saw these fine bicycles chained up next to the boat, and the interior frame bar on the inside bike caught my eye.
Someone's ancient Profile Champ, rusting for who knows how many years. BB and rear triangle were looking awfully rough.
If it was in better shape, I would have made some moves on it. I'm sure there are a number of VBMX folks that still would have made their move : )
Funny to see, took a quick pic...

To me, Im not offended. Im catholic, however, it would upset me if some of my jewish friends got upset with this on the board.
Why not say "haggle"

I think this is a geography issue more than anything. Saying "jew em down" is pretty common here and not meant to be derogatory. They say it on the radio and the tv. Im sure if the jewish population were bigger here in Texas, there would have been someone "offended" and made it not so commonplace. As it stands though, "jew em down" is a pretty common colloquialism here and I was honestly surprised that someone would take offense to it. "haggle" just isnt spoken around here.
If I offended someone, my apologies.

That a thing is pretty common doesn't make it right. That you are not Jewish means you are not a judge of what is or is not offensive to that particular religious group. Your naivety is also astounding when you say "it's pretty common here and not meant to be derogatory". Oh really? How then did that phrase come to be in a place like Texas? If not derogatory, what then was it meant to be when a proper English word like "haggle" or "negotiate" just doesn't fit the bill of insult?

sigh.
I dont have to be jewish to understand that my use of the word only related a religious sect with being thrifty or tight with their money and had I wanted to offend someone, I would have certainly picked a much more personal subject to do so. Can you imagine if every white man from the south got offended every time he heard a redneck joke or every christian was called a bible thumper, or every time Europeans reference fat americans, or chinese people with being short? The innernetz would grind to a crawl from all the keyboard pounding and tobacker spittin but for some god awful reason, relating a jewish person to being careful with their money has people pulling out their hair. unreal.
BTW I dont speak proper english. I speak texan. It resembles english but not quite the same.

Btw, the reference to "Jewing" is not common place in Texas. I think your post might be the first time I've heard it in about ten years. However, it's common use might be associated w/ the class of people you run with. I don't find it's use acceptable at all.

The adolescent thing to do would be to state the word in the same manner that you find unacceptable. It wasn't unacceptable for you to say it, but it is for someone else? That is the true definition of hypocrisy. Now try to save what's left of your dignity with another insult.

Hey MadCowboy,
The Jewish population of Texas is about 131,000 out of 22 million. Approximately 0.6% of the total population. That's according to a couple of websites that track Jewish populations state by state.
Find a temple in your area and ask one of your fellow (Jewish) Texans what they think about the use of the word in that context. I have a feeling you'll come away with a better understanding of why it's not acceptable, even if it is assumed to be 'okay'. And if you continue to think it's 'okay' after talking with one of them, then that's a deeper issue that probably won't be changed by anything said to you on a bmx forum....

"Jew" and "Irish" are not pejoratives like the "N" word so don't even try putting them in the same category.
I've been called a redneck. It doesnt offend me because I am proud of who i am. Perhaps you people should be proud of who you are, then you wouldn't be so easily offended.
Now continue on with your browbeating and calling me names like bigot and racist and thinking you are better than me so you can feel better about yourselves. Ill be the scapegoat. That doesn't bother me, either.

QUOTE (kcmobmx @ Jul 22 2009, 08:21 AM)

You people?
The people who were "offended" by my statement. Not necessarily directed towards you.
Sometimes "stereotype" and "prejudice" are confused. Stereotypes are standardized and simplified conceptions of groups, based on some prior assumptions. Stereotypes are created based on some idea of abstract familiarity. Prejudices are more specific - they are predispositions to
differential behavior patterns.
The keyword here is differential. Am I any different than my comparison of jews being frugal? What if I am frugal? We all are, to some extent. Whether it's a misconception or not, it is still a perception of Jewish people. Was my comment being negative towards Jews? That's a matter of perception. Being frugal doesn't necessarily mean a bad thing, so you have to look at intent. Was I intending to belittle Jews with my remark? No. I stated early on that I wasn't and for you people to sit here and pass judgement on me as some kind of bigot or racist is ludicrous. I have never posted anything here in that manner and this certainly isn't one, either.
Fact is, we all stereotype in some form or the other, consciously or unconsciously, everyday. It is a natural part of communication in our society. There are just as many positive stereotypes as there are negative and for someone to say stereotyping is wrong, perhaps they should understand the meaning of the word before making such a statement.

Madcowboy, you assume the people admonishing you think that they are better than you. An interesting choice of words and those are indeed your words, not ours. It seems to escape your imagination that many of us simply exhibit more common sense than you. Various members of the board are generously SHARING their stories with you on gaffes they have made that led to an enlightening moment and we've all had them at one time or another. Clearly you are capable of this enlightenment but unfortunately and stubbornly you choose to wallow in your ignorance if not just outright defend it. It is unfortunate.
Now back on topic.
How many people are going to show up for that Profile? More than two people and the asking price will skyrocket. There needs to be a coordinated effort I think.

That BB does look rough. All the better to jew him out of it for next to nothing

MadCowboy.
For what it's worth I'm from West Tx...In the 1960's and 70's it was somewhat isolated from ethnic diversity in the small towns (just had mainly Caucasians and Hispanics) but most small towns have grown with the World now and are in touch via mass migration, cable and internet. I've learned the hard way but there are 2 things going on here with your post on getting a good deal for the Profile Cruiser..
The "misleading intent" and "Jew" association (Misleading Jew) is is coming off insensitive and self serving to Non Jewish straight shooters and more than likely Jewish Folk that are straightshooters. To use a rusted BB angle to mislead someone that the bike is worth "next to nothing" is normally just called "Swindle" and normally regarded as shady...but instead you used "Jew" him out of it for "next to nothing".
Tone calls it "Haggle" but Haggle is different because it is negotiation & agreement... and isn't a "Swindle" (which is lying about something to get it for "next to nothing")....Obviously that bike is worth something to the someone that owns it and therefore locks it up, you can find out what they think it's worth with questions and negotiation, or "Haggling"... then instead of going for the wallet you can hit them on the back of the head with a tire iron, grab the bike and haul outta there like a @#$%^&.... That's my 2 cents if it helps you out down the road.
