Like I mentioned in one of my posts earlier, its a geographic thing. Slang is different in all parts of the world and what might be acceptable somewhere may not be somewhere else. Saying "jew it down" wont draw near the criticism in an area where there are relatively no jews around. In fact, I've never had someone balk at the term and I've been saying it all my life. Ive been saying it before I even knew what a Jew was. And it isnt just me, it is a very common slang used in these parts, regardless of what chriscobath says.

Yall have made your point. I will refrain from using the expression here. Im not here to get you bent out shape. Im here for the love of BMX. If I offended you, I apologize. It wasnt my intention.

Again, comparing what I said to a pejorative like the "N" word is apples and oranges.

And regardless of what they claim, Jews are not a race. It's a religious preference.

OK FIRST OFF NO ONE JUMP ALL OVER ME FOR THIS. THIS IS NOT AN ATTACK IN ANY WAY TOWARDS ANY ONE RACE!

There are two topics going on here. Whats funny is the Profile is in Hawaii. And the bike in Hawaii fueled a Racial or ethnic debate. Hawaii is as racially diversified as you can get. In Hawaii we grew up calling each other racial names. It was just part of growing up and for the most part no one meant anything by it. Racial slurs like:

Filipino - Flip
Japanese - Jap
Caucasian - Haole
Hawaiian - Coconut

The list goes on and on - you get the picture. Each race gets teased here for its uniqueness. We tease each other out of love for the most part. I am half Chinese, part Hawaiian, American Indian, Portugese, Irish, German and Dutch. Its all in how its done and how its taken. The "Jew him down" comment wasn't meant to harm anyone. It was just a phrase that some may find offensive. I used to use the term Nig Rig also. Used it all my life. I had no idea what it meant until my last fire captain explained it to me. So I stopped using the term. But, if I had a Black friend who I was close to and cared about I would probably use it around him - all in fun. Its just how we tease each other here. We grew up a little differently here due to the multiracial atmosphere.

Lets just let the issue at hand go and get back to the Profile. Two vintage guys Rust808 and BU808 are on it. Lets hope they find it and post some pics.

The Profile is at Kewalo Basin on Kono's dock. The frame and fork have extensive rust. Someone will need to examine them closely. The front hub has ridges, so I'm guessing it's a GT. The rear hub has MCS stickers, but has the general shape of a Gyro. The stem might be a DK. Cranks are one-piece. Note that the tires are flat, so it probably hasn't moved for a while.

I sent BU aka Bone808 some pix, hope he'll post them here.

Aloha,

Figured it was at Kewalo Basin. Only due to it was seen while taking a fishing trip.

Jeremy,

Well said on how we grow up here in Hawaii. It is like no other place were you grow up playing with different ethnic groups and can get along with each other.

I guess I didn't make it clear, but the Profile is still there. I just went to scope it out as Rust and BU were going to try to get it from previous posts.

Jeremy & BC,
You're absolutely correct...we were raised in an environment quite unique from most of the mainland. Unfortunately for us, with everything being global, including this forum, we need to be more PC (Politically Correct).

I can see where the culture in Hawaii is very unique, it also very similar in many ways to Trinidad & Tobago where there are many different ethnicities, Indian, West Indian/Afro Carib, European white and Chinese as well as the religious component of Hindus, Muslims, Christians etc. On those islands the ribbing doesn't so much focus on ethnicity as much as it does island/caribbean rivalry which is for the most part good natured. Not always, but mostly.

And my remark was ill natured?

Let me get this straight, you are offended to the point of calling me a racist and a bigot not 3 posts earlier in this thread for saying jew it down, but actual racial slurs directed at islanders is mostly good natured and perfectly fine with you? Can you be any more of a hypocrite? I guess its all good natured as long as it isnt directed at you? As long as your wittle feewins arent hurted?

Nevermind those questions. I already know the answer regardless of what your next post states. You're a toolbox and i give a rats *** what you have to say anymore.

Your still not getting it, EVERYBODY has heard it before at one time or another in their life and the term has been around for a long time. It may have been more acceptable to some in this countries more racist times but that is no longer the case.

AND... I'm not acting all shocked, I just don't like the fact that you are defending your statement by saying its the norm around here (Texas) to use that term like we're all straight off the farm country folk (or rednecks as you put it) that don't know right from wrong on how to talk in the big city.

The term is not a racist remark so stop referring to it as one. I did not make a racist remark so it being the "racist times" or not, is irrelevant. Given the current situation with the Harvard professor and the president sticking his amateur foot in his mouth, the "times" you speak of is debatable.

I live in a big city. Grew up right here in the D/FW metroplex, the same one you live in. I have NEVER had someone balk at the term "jew em down". Just because you dont say it, doesnt mean other people here dont. You (just like me) are not a representative of everyone in the state so worrying about other people's perception of you because of what I say is lunacy. Perhaps it's you who isn't getting it. I don't care how I make you "look". Seriously.

You say "straight off the farm country folk" like its a bad thing. Aren't you doing the same thing to country folk that I did to Jews in this statement? You stereotyped a group of people. Typical glass house stone thrower is what you are. You wont be needing that Windex anymore, pal.

I am just replying to comments made to me. You are the one who chimed in with suggestions of changing my vocabulary, after I already stated that I would refrain from using the statement here. If people would stop trying to browbeat me for doing something everybody does, sterotyping, I could easily drop it. But that hasn't happened.

your post = redundant, stating what has already been said, unnecessary.

my posts = rebuttals to comments made to me, about me.

Big difference.

All this time all you people are spending being angry about Cowboys statement is time you'll never get back in this life. And why don't you spend that time with your kids or spend it being nice to someone or helping someone. I believe that Cowboy meant no harm in his statement and would never call someone a Jew for having a Jewish name or if he knew they were Jewish I seriously doubt he gives a s**t about someones heritage or faith and thats good enough for me. And furthermore most of the people crying aren't even Jewish!! WOW now thats what I call wasting precious moments of your life. There's a saying here in Hawaii - "Don't be Chang" or "You are so Chang" or sometimes someone will just say "Chang". I have used it many times and still do. I have had it said to me many times. In Hawaii Chinese people are stereotyped as being "tight" with their money or "frugal" - (Much like it seems Jewish people are stereotyped on the mainland I guess). Thats how the saying probably originated here. I am 1/2 Chinese. I take no offense to the saying at all. My grandma who is full Chinese says it all the time. I guess what I am trying to say is I think we are going so far to be politically correct at times. Those that you think would be offended by certain comments really don't care.....OK well not all. But, I am sure Madcowboy meant no harm in the statement at all. Yet, most of this sh_t storm is being directed at him. A bit oversensative now days I think. But, hey now I'll get flamed too I guess?

Religion is irrelevant. Its a group of people. I referred to one group as cheap and frugal, and in your haste to jump on the MadCowboy is a racist bandwagon here, even though I never mentioned anything about race, you referred to rednecks and country folks as ignorant.

Now tell me, who's remark was more insulting. Would you rather be called cheap or ignorant?

Wow, this is an interesting thread. I'm surprised that nobody has found this bike yet. The next topic can be "Check out the Profile I scored in Hawaii" or "Someone just stole my bike!".

I grew up in Northern NJ, it was a racially, ethnically and religously diverse place, a lot of people used racial, ethnic and religous slurs and people seemed to get along fine. I know in other parts of the country it is not done. When I left NJ and moved to NC, things were different. They considered themselves "Southerners" and the rest of us "Yankees" or "Damn Yankees". Since I grew up in NJ, it didn't really bother me because I have been called worse. I have since moved to Florida so I'm not sure how its done here.

No madcowboy, I don't. You just refuse to get it. Stop making assumptions about me to justify your own lack of common sense and awareness. I'm new here to Hawaii, and I keep hearing about all the slang terms folks around here use for each other and you will not catch me using them here. I don't know anyone, I'm not nearly familiar enough with anyone here and for damn sure no one here is familiar enough with me to call me by anything but my name (to my face at least).

It's not about being PC Cowboy, it's about common sense and respect, which everyone deserves, even your sorry self. So you keep on going the way you like, I'm sure all in all you're a decent guy but you function in a narrow world and this reflects poorly on you, not anyone your slang may be referring to. Far from hurting anyones feelings, it's simply unfortunate. Unfortunate because who here wants to risk friendships or introductions to someone like yourself knowing just about anything inappropriate can and will come flying out of your mouth. If you've got it to say about Jews, then you've got it to say about someone else you either think isn't there, or think doesn't matter.

Let me put it in another light for you. Lets say this track here in Hawaii opens up and one day, the hottest girl there just happens to be Jewish. We don't know it, you don't know it, we've never seen her before but she's hot and we wanna get to know her. She makes eyes at someone (maybe even you) and assuming you are straight, you're interested which relegates everyone else to the task of wingman. That's the male code as I understand it. If you're not helping, you're hurting. So, conversation rolls around to that Profile sitting on the dock and bam, out of your mouth comes the slur. Now what? It's done. None for you, or for anyone else seen talking to you because we all, by association just flew through the jet wash that is your ignorance and are pulling a chord to bail out.

Don't worry about the "someone just stole my bike" post. Smiley doesn't have a computer. He was rockin' a GT 20" Compe although now I think he's on a red Trek 20".

And this racial deal is on the wrong thread. I grew up in Los Angeles and now live in Hawaii . . . and never in the posh neighborhoods. Plus, I'm as white as the day is long. So I've been, in effect, somewhat of a minority since I was 5. Gringo, White boy, Hoale. It's all the same. It only takes a little bit of skill to see where, or should I say if, there is any malice in it. I'd say there usually isn't . . . in my experience. And yes, my friends (mostly not white) and I share racial jabs back and forth, but in person and all in good fun. It's kind of hard to express malice or humor in a comment while typing without using the stupid emoticons. So I'd say let's leave the blue or off-color comments to a restricted site. One that isn't supposed to be about "little kids bikes". Watch, now I'm gonna get heat for talking about the stupid emoticons. diablo.gif

The only colors that matter here are Rust and Chrome! Let's let Obama (also from Hawaii) make uninformed comments about race and get back to that little kids bike. I tried a number I had for Smiley but it's disconnected. No surprise there. God speed brothers . . . even if you are from a different race, religion, sexual orientation, planet, whatevers. Sheesh!
