It's not "NEW SCHOOL" it's reproduced Old School, if he made something that looks different from what was made 25 years ago I might reconsider my thinking. I own originals of everyrthing he makes.

aren't the Johnny Chopper cranks reproduced old-school as well? what makes them better than the Hutch branded ones? don't they both use the Profile 48 splined spindle? I am cornfused...

I also can't understand the allergy some of you guys have towards the Hutch remake gear.
Why would you prefer to buy these off of Gary when they are clearly Hutch knock off's, and then say you won't buy Hutch gear because they are knock off's? What's the difference? The price you pay will probably end up not much different by the time you buy the bottom bracket, spindle and power disk!
By the way, Gary does fantastic work and he is a great bloke to boot!

whats the cost?
Gary's JC Cranks v JDB's Hutch Repro's ?
your answer may lie within ?

Jul 10 2009, 04:34 PM
the Johnny Chopper site doesn't list the Hutchesque cranks anymore but their 2 other styles range from 199-235.00 (add 35.00 for chrome) for the arms. the Hutch brand cranks (yet to be released) are said to be in the 600.00 price range but will include all hardware (Ti hardware and spindle) and the power disc. by the time you add all the hardware with the JC cranks they are in the same price range...

I will say this, I think Hutch should offer their cranksets with the option of buying arms only.

Who do you think is making the Hutch cranks? With less profit ofcourse atleast they will be the same quality . Don't u people get it?

My stroker cranks were 200 shipped for the arms only, but compared to profiles it was worth every penny.
I don't think price has been the problem with the perception of Hutch stuff, it has been the method.

I don't think they do. I'm actually glad Scott chose not to jump the shark and do these for JDB.

I paid 50 GBP for my DX Cranks ! never spent more than 200 GBP on a set of full wraps either, not a big fan of Aerospeeds now or bitd, i've now got Profile's on my Trickstar, good enough for me....
600 bucks for a set of repro cranks is still a lot of cash, especially in a falling market!

Gary's sh!tz is the bomb and great prices to boot. I have a set of stroker cranks and a set of profile boxes - strokers beat the profiles hands down. Also, Gary will do custom rides - I want him to build a ride for my son - h*t*h like.

600 dollars for chinese made hutch cranks, i dont think so. you make this in the good old usa then it might be worth buying. i hope john makes all of his retro hutch stuff in the usa, but i have a bad feeling that this will not happen, and thats a real shame!!

A while back in one of these threads I mention that JDB make retro stems like Kappa. He thought I was making them. The dude actucally called me at work - WTF. I use the hilter term loosely - don't want to offended anyone - sorry.

Here's my set of JC cranks:

Beautiful attention to detail, non of the ground down welds and polishing issues that some of the manufactures suffered.
Chromed in the UK though.

It is rumored? Yeah, because you started the rumor. And +1 on learning to use a calculator.
It would be nice to make them in the US... but the only manufacturer that I know of in the US that could get up to speed quickly would be Profile (and why would they make a competitor's cranks for them?).
So why doesn't Hutch just build a crank factory and make their own here in the US? I'm going to guess because this is a low volume item and is only possible if an existing manufacturer with experience and tooling to make cranks produces them.... which as far as I know doesn't exist in the US (except for Profile). Does anyone know of one? If so, let me know - I'd like to get some cranks made and be able to charge the "Made in the USA" premium

Hey, if everything is going to be made overseas, maybe the new race jerseys should have white sleeves with red dots, you know, to signify the Japanese flag instead of the stars from the United States flag.
Just a thought.

Original Aerospeeds are rare why?
1) Few people bought them back in the day
2) those who did broke them and tossed them in the garbage
Thus rare!
Now you are discussing the quality of repro cranks that very few people will actually ride? ...have fun!
Oh, and Hi Brett!

Considering I paid 300 for the Profiles and only ended up using the spindle, bearings and spider, 500 isn't bad for something high quality, with good chrome and a powerdisk. I paid 200 for the JC arms only. Add in the profile spider and spindle, polish job on the profile spider and chrome bolts and I have bunch in that setup.
