i noticed this on alot of the retros, esp. the quads, the paint chips very easily, i am not sure why? and the ironic thing is, is that the cheap non-retro se bikes paint does not chip, but the high quality retro frames chip very easily, its very annoying, i hope on the 2010 models this does not happen. the overall bike it self is much better than my older quads, longer and stronger frames.
i meant my older quads of the early 80s, to short for me now, and they break to easy, but the newer retros are much more longer and stronger than previous years, except for the paint, it looks nice but chips to much.

Well, I only had my OM for a few days before I took it to a powdercoater because I willingly wanted to change the color.
I talked to him yesterday when he told me he was done stripping it and was getting ready to shoot it. He mentioned the old finish was pretty tough.
It may be a combo of multiple things, the color, the frame material, atmospheric conditions where you live, etc...
To generalize it as a mass scale issue with the finish simply falling off by itself but only on the "high dollar bikes" is a bit extreme.
Someone call the wah-bulance...

Also, have you ever thought to handle things properly?
ie...
Go to your dealer and ask them to contact SE about a possible defect. Instead of coming here to ***** about your issue.

I dont know man, I ate POOP last night on my OM, only damage was a gouged up pedal and bar end. My 09 Quad has a bit of chipping on the rear drop out, but Im pretty sure thats just par for the course.

My 07 Quad is very chipped. Oh thats right. I ride it all the time.
Honestly it does chip pretty easy. Not too fussed though. It's not rare and I can fix it after I kill it a bit more.

My PK Ripper came out of the box with chips on the forks, the bottom of the head tube, and around the bottom bracket. Surprising and annoying....however, a trip to Autozone and the purchase of a bottle of 'Cardinal Red' touch up paint solved it for me. Less work than complaining about it to invisible corporate types.....

Ha. I've been called many things over the years, but this is the first time for "invisible corporate type." That's funny.
Ok, FYI- All retro bikes will come with touch up paint for 2010. And quite a few other bikes in the line as well. I have informed our factory many times about the paint quality on some of the frames. They are aware & trying to find a solution. And bikes are being packaged better now also so they'll arrive in the best condition as possible.
Word.

The paint just doesn't stick like it used to. Needs more lead...
