Since I can't afford to buy any DVD's right now I'm currently digging this video rockin' some old Public Enemy:

What's your favorite?

That's an awesome video. I've said it before, but I can't refrain from repeating myself. That era was when flatland peaked IMO. There's some individual tricks now that are harder and impressive, but the overall style of that era is WAAAYYYYY cooler than modern flatland.

I'll be honest, as hard as modern flatland is, it's actually pretty boring to watch.

What's amazing is that all those York dudes totally reinvented the sport. Once their style and tricks hit, the superstar pro's looked like... 1985 again, and it was time to play catch up, or fall off the face of the earth. Many did, and thrived with this new style, but a lot of others... their day in the sun was done. I really like this era also, but for me, the 86-88 years will always be like.. "my era" that I hunt for videos for. Once bashguards and street riding came about, I lost interest. It's soo rad that after that came this crazy new world of flatland, then long after, this crazy new world of street, which incorporates flatland, yet is like.. impossible, LOL.

Modern flatland now, yeah.. It doesn't do anything for me. I can see how good some of these new dudes are, doing insane things on bikes without brakes, but it's so technical, it loses the style. I remember going through this back in my skating days. I would be busy throwing long, beautiful backside grinds on curbs, bombing hills or boardsliding along park benches and all the "new wave" of kids would be standing around, endlessly trying crazy flip tricks and what not while not even rolling, on boards with wheels that barely covered the bearings. I remember thinking... that's not even skateboarding.

Same with a lot of modern flatland.. it's like.. not freestyle. It's who can learn the most, the fastest and the most difficult tricks in the shortest amount of time, compared to really showing the style. Take someone like Rick Allison busting one of those windsurfers, Woody with a top gun or Aparijo busting the big toothy grin during Miami hop hops in comparison to some spinning in circles, brakeless whatevers, nowadays.

Wow, rare appearance of Dino Deluca riding for SE!

Woody is one lanky dude in this vid.

Vander...

Love that flyout over the van at the end, was that Eddie?

Ahh, the memories.

Good stuff on youtube, but I highly recommend the DVD set on eBay that has over 30 hours of freestyle old school footage. I am still going through it all! Has everything, I love Team Haro AFA, 101 Freestyle Tricks, GTV, and on and on. I still got some of the old VHS's and just ordered new copies of the books! Great stuff. I never would have thought that I would rediscover my love for freestyle and be back 100% at age 35.

I found this one the other day by chance. I used to have it on video tape. Don't know whatever happened to it:

I like new school flatland, personally. Old school, new school, it's all cool. I've posted this new school video before. I think this guy has a lot of the same style as the hoods in the first video:

And my own video from back in the day seems to be doing very well, 15,000 views since I put in on over 8 months ago.

Seems it is most popular in California. I pulled some good tricks but I also was very sloppy on alot of them, I don't know why this video is doing so much better than my others lol!
