The Red Baron
"My opinion"

I had retired from racing long before these vids were shot. I had been on the recieving end of both intentional and un-intentional 'berm shots'. Things happen.

These are video clips taken from a distance and at the point of contact I cannot see all the details.

In the first vid, the Murray rider 'appears' to have given a hard shot to the lead rider. I do not know the Murray riders history, is that the way he rides or was he caught up in the moment and made a bad decision. What about the lead rider, could that have been the way he rides and this was payback?

In the second vid, I think the lead rider could have held on. It did not look like much of a shot. But again it is hard to see the details at a distance and at full speed and from not knowing history of all parties.

Those are great videos. The guys who won or benefited from advanced positions would say that all is well. While the guys who crashed (or got crashed, depending on where you stand) would say those videos are lame. ohmy.gif

They are a moment in time and they are what they are. Rubbing is racing. We've all done it. cool.gif

hehehehe... That pretty much happened to me at cedar over the second obstacle, the nasty step up and ended in a separated shoulder. smile.gif Now I call Cedar "The shoulder grinder". smile.gif

Anyway, that kid just looked at his front wheel all the way out of the gate and as soon as he gained it, he moved over HARD. That's nasty racing biggrin.gif

Thats terrible ,believe it or not that happens at about every 35-39 cruiser main i race [i mean unless u back down it does]
There has been quiete a few occasions i have done it myself ,primarily out of revenge to getting it done to me the moto before .
Alpha
maybe it's just me being old school... but rubbin's racin and it all looked like normal racing to me.

then again, i race cruisers and it's pretty much just like it was in the late 80's - 90's... unless you know the people you're racing with it's pretty much a free for all once you get on the track. off the track it's all good. on the track it's watch out...

IMO unless you intentionally try to take someone out it's all good in between the chalk lines. Some of the new rules are interesting to adjust to but this is what it is... racing is an adrenaline fueled contact sport with speed.

there's always the lawn chair you know.....

Ok - I am the Murray rider in the first video. Sorry David McKnight. It was not intentional... He was a good friend and competitor.

Side note, and I realize before typing this that it will not help my case, David absolutely parked me at the Charlotte Motor Speedway national a month or so before this race - in the *semi*, with us running first and second. So, while not intentional, at least it happened in the main event... and I do not believe that it was intentional. We raced many times after this race and never had another incident.

Thats so unexciting huh brad ?He he .
You really cant see enough as a spectator to make a real call .Its cool to see this stuff after all these years .I had thought you needed a green darth vader helmet ,lol.Good stuff buddy ,hope your not too bent i used you for a laugh..

Brad, I wish that there was vid of us going at it @ Ashville in 84....remember?

That was Brad's first introduction to the Ultimate Sin....lol

So funny Mike. I almost commented on that as well. The only other on track issue I can recall is with Crehan. Asheville, NC - my first national riding for Murray in 1984, and the first time I ever raced against Mike Crehan. Mike and I are in the same 13 cruiser moto. I am leading the first moto into the final corner. ***WHAM*** I took a big hit as Mike used me for the berm and put me in the cheap seats. I literally ran into the fence that went around the track. I will let Mike comment on his intentions, but my guess is that it was a honest, aggressive move that resulted in a pretty hard hit. I think I won the second moto. When the third moto comes around, I am in second headed into the final corner and Mike is in first. I seized the opportunity to "repay" the favor. I think I even pedaled in the middle of the corner to make sure I got there... I put Mike in the same place he put me. I won the moto, but got DQ'd and did not even transfer out of the motos. Not sure Mike if you protested or if it was just so blatant that the flagman had to call it. Regardless, it was intentional, and I deserved what I got.

We had 2 years of great battles beginning with that race. We never had another on track issue that I can recall. Plenty of tough racing and emotional outbursts, but never another instance where contact was made, intentional or otherwise. Lots of respect my friend... lots.

SWEET
That second vid is the race that got Pritchard kicked off of GT and earned him the nickname "Mr. Controversy".
I was there.
MadCowboy
Pritchard wasnt afraid to play dirty in the turns but im not so sure he was there. He just took the inside and he would have had to hammer the brakes to make that turn without touching him. It was cruiser class, afterall. Wouldnt suprise me if it was tho.

Steve, it is an honor to be mentioned in the same category as the riders that are in the Hall. I would like to think that the biggest reason I have never been nominated is b/c it has historically been for ABA BMX, and I raced very little ABA during my career... but who knows. Where I grew up, there were no ABA tracks and the NBL dominated the scene. Obviously, I raced all the guys that were prominent in the ABA, and was fortunate enough to win 4 national titles during my 6 years on the national circuit. Maybe now that the HoF has been widened to include all sanctioning bodies, I might get some consideration. That by itself would be a huge honor... but it is not something that I can or will dwell on.

Keep posting the videos.... we are all enjoying them very much.

You are so right Brad, it wasn't intentional, however you were between me and the finishline. Overly agressive, you bet, but racing you sometimes that was the only way I could beat you. I guess it all comes down to the start. If you got the holeshot, most likely you won, if I got it I did (most of the time, because I had a habbit of crashing). I know other people have said that they remember us going at it at other tracks, but like you I don't think so. I never minded getting beat by Carter, Mitchel, LaBerge, Riblet, Callahan, Backus and so many more, but since the first time we met @ Ashville I just didn't want to see the blue and green in front of me.

That was my first NBL national (I think), I went to a few ABA nats and the Jag World's before that, but no NBL.

I think that I did protest, just for the simple fact that you gave me a taste of my own medicine, which when I was a teenager I couldn't handle. I think if you look back and try to remember they called us to the last turn and when we we're both standing there he asked me if I wanted to go foward with the protest and I said yes. I think I remember you just throwing up your hands with the look that would kill....lol

If your name was on the HOF ballot, I WOULD NOT THINK TWICE ABOUT VOTING FOR YOU, not at all. The same way that I vote for Deanna, I'll keep voting for her until she gets in. Much love briother.

I just got done watching all the videos that Steve uploaded onto You Tube and its amazing how many names I heard that are back out racing today. No wonder the cruiser classes are so crazy now! Thanks for taking the time to post all those.

Didnt get to accually see it happen but i was at trumble in 90' and heard a big booo in the crowd kinda like brads cheering section ...I seen a rider high tailing it to the s&m tent laugh.gif turns out it was brian foster i think he was running from dave cullinan after boosting him over the turn .

I wish i had a few of mine on tape or photos .I had some trouble with a foreign rider in superclass in 90 .He costed me some $ by jackhammering me on the straights for no real reason in qualifiers and motos .I took about 3 races worth of this and the perfect opp.arose in turn 3 at nashville i did the pedal check and he went firmly down to the moto boards -i never had any trouble with him again .Allthough todd corbit came over to me after the race and asked me what was my problem .

Btw uploading these videos is as thrilling to me as seeing my own videos i miss seeing all you guys at the races .

I remember that race well... there was a LOT of physical racing going on in the cruiser classes... That last berm was a long sweeper so you really had to aim at someone to hit them hard wink.gif ... I was racing 25-29 (or 25-34?) and got run completely off the side of the step jump on the second straight and had to come back on the track in the next turn to take the lead back from the culprit... that track was downhill and smooth... and we had the weather to deal with as it went from balmy and warm on Friday to sleet and snow in the mains on Sunday... it was all good, but there was definitely some payback on and off the track for certain tactics.

I've been on the giving and receiving end on the track and had to rule on actions and protests as a track and state official... It is really interesting to read the adult versions of the adolescent testosterone venting BITD...

When it comes to racing, Crehan and unintentional are just two words that can never go together tongue.gif

I got put over the first berm in a main by Eddy King once. I think it was because a Zonie noboddy beat him in the first moto. I kinda pulled a go high and cut him off move in the first berm (by accident I wasn't that good) He says he just got a bad gate but I'd like to think I was just that good that day (it was my moment in the sun). Rubbins racing, but I would draw the line at an obvious intentional take out shot. Sportsmanship has to enter into it somewhere.

James had another nickname for a while; "Side Saddle".
On several occasions I saw him lean on another rider so hard that it appeared that James was sitting on their seat.....and he was still pedalling full speed.
