MadCowboy
Dont hit the brakes, you forgot the pads!!

Is that Scott Bratheiupt (sp?) signature I see on the top tube?

Sweet build d00d!

lol he beat me to it about the pads. I dont blame you. Hate to put pad marks on shiny new rim.

I love it--very nice use of parts!

It is really a bummer when you see something so nice as this and the only thing someone can think to say is the brake pads are missing! I guess not everyone knows you just finished it, and are still considering changing a couple of minor details, which is why every 't' isn't crossed and "i" dotted!

Even with the brake pads missing, you have built another great bike Matt, and it is my opinion that when building bikes, you have an eye for detail that is unmatched! I'm telling you--anyone who hasn't seen some of Matt's builds, you'd be very impressed by how he uses Chrome to balance-out the colors, and how when dealing with certain colors and other little details, he uses subtlety in his approach rather than flooding the bikes with those colors--which is always my first instinct to do, and why I believe I've learned a lot about what to do(and what not to do) by observing Matt's builds! You should post some of your other amazing builds for everyone to see too Matt!!!!!

I think the funniest part is that people notice the brake pads are missing, but I don't think anyone other than Tony noticed that it is no ordinary PK Ripper, but it is a '79 PK Ripper Prototype(one of only 5 made, and is the version of the PK Ripper that is drawn-up in the PK Blueprints as you can tell by the FMF-Style Dropouts)!!!!! That is what I noticed...not the missing brake pads!!!
MadCowboy
^^ <sigh>

chill dude. I think everyone here is well aware of the level of awesomeness in this build. The brake pads comments were in jest, and unknowingly posted at the exact same time, so there was no conspiracy to dog his bike.

BTW, I noticed the dropouts but I didnt feel inclined to tell him what he had, Im quite certain he already knows! I did ask about the signature to which I never got a reply though.

We arent as dumb as you think.
JMCGT
Thanks Randy...
Yes it was signed by Scot B on the top bar..
Its a bit hard to answer people when they tell you that your bike is missing the brake pad..??
Sorry cowboy, but you didnt feel inclined to tell me what i have, but what i dont have..
Makes we wonder why i post a bike sometimes, and i dont think Randy would call you dumb as he has a kind heart ...
Cheers Guys

Wow...just wow. Thats only the second PK I have seen with the FMF style drop outs, sweet! Choice of colors and parts adds very well to the era...except it would be double sweet if it had innovations forks..standard for all SEs in 1979. That being said, very awesome to have the forks in baby blue decals and the frame in gold/tan. All the SEs back in those days had mis matched colors like that. The November 1979 issue of bmx plus tests the PK with drop outs like that. I didnt know it was a prototype and that only 5 were made...can any one confirm that?
JMCGT
Thanks
yes apperently five were made and three still known..
I do have some raceinc forks but just couldnt seperate these as they came with the frame when i bought it..
and being the non drilled dropout LG's..thought i would keep them with it..
JMCGT
here is the 79 mag

Why is it hard to answer a question after I made a joke about missing a 5 dollar brake pad on a 3,000 dollar bike?

Did you miss the part in my post where I said "Sweet build d00d!"

Or the part where I agree with not putting pads on there when I said "I dont blame you. Hate to put pad marks on shiny new rim. "

Good god dude. Grow a sense of humor
ACGTO
Gee Matt. You're a stick in the mud aren't you!
broke L345
Matt, sorry I called your bike pooey tongue.gif

OK I'm gonna be serious for a seccond.

It's sad when you see a bike this nice and there are over 200 veiws and only 20 or so comments or questions. especially with something this rare. The guys that comment obviously love the bike otherwise they would just go to the next topic.

I'm sure you've written this elsewhere or maybe not but could you give me the parts list and history? I have seen the seats before but have no idea what it is. Was this the bike that sold on ebay with the blueprint? how'd you come by it?

Wow nice build! As someone who loves PKs it is really awesome to see such an early model (it doesn't get any earlier! smile.gif ) You have a priceless piece of BMX history there.
jbros125
I don't want to hi-jack your thread. Your bike is gorgeous!! Un-real detail. does anyone know where I can get that exact pad set? Been looking for awhile for brown vinyl SE pads. biggrin.gif
84profile
Matt, that is just an awesome piece of history. Like so many of your collection, you are very understated with it, again a credit to you...I totally dig the brown and the suede seat!

Those are very rare and can be pricey.

I would love to hear a history of the frame...and how you aquired it. I found mine on ebay in a very blurry photo...but I did notice the dropouts and knew I had to win it. I think I paid under 200 for mine, its been a few years.

Double Chevron
rarer than a rare thing in the rare things shop !!!
Love the way you built it, you made it justice smile.gif , but I'd rather see it with some brake pads too happy.gif

So heres two of the five that were made, who has the third one? I think its amazing that 3 of the 5 are still known to exist, what are the odds?

Alex, I think Brian Had one.

Really? Are you sure? I dont recall but then again, I forget alot of things these days.
BRIAN HAYS
Unfortunately, it wasn't me Mark and Alex. I tried very hard to buy this frame from Bill Hohmann before it was ever put on Ebay. He had emailed me pics of it and a 79 round top tube frame to see if I wanted them.

Randy and Matt got their info from me.This was the same time last year that the OM was out on "leave" and I talked to him about the FMF dropout frames. It was his info that said there were 5 of these built. Good hard fact? Nope, but the only thing we have to go on for now.

Randy and Matt, Really..... I knew from the start that these guys were just ribbib' ya. It's all in good fun. It's what BMX brethren do.
BRIAN HAYS
BTW, STELLAR build. Your choice of parts is right on. I dig it (even if it don't have any brakepads smile.gif )

Jeesh. Who's the showoff with the diamond drop frame, the only round top tube JU6 known to still exist with a couple of TRUE NOS other PK's mixed in. Trip to Ole Miss anyone??
johnnieboy
It's a stunner - particularly with those dropouts. I really like the mix of parts, shimano cranks with steel rat traps for instance. It's real.
broke L345
Johnnie boy, I think they are Campagniolo cranks (sp?) but I agree three pce cranks and rat traps are very cool.
JMCGT

Thanks guys
Yes Brian is spot on, the frame came from Bill, as i also got the round top tube 79 ..
Cranks are strada 170mm campys.. they were quite used so i gave them a polish..
bars are fmf tall, tuf neck stem, kkt pedals
7B's with bullseye hubs, was going for phils but they never turned up..must have got lost with the brake pads wink.gif
The seat is a seamless black suede..
tyres were an issue, got offered some comp 11's for $800 and deciced on the panracers,lol..

Alex yours looks awesome in the blue, heres a pic of my round top 79
did you have plans off fitting raceinc forks to yours..??
Matt

johnnieboy
Broke - thanks for picking me up.

Me dummy - you observant, or just know what you're looking at!

Early road race cranks aren't they?
jipster43
Dope.

Brian, i grabbed these forks from Alan
you may remember talikng to him about them a few months back..??

Jbros, pads are very hard to find especially in a set, you see alot of singles come up..
seen quite a few singles sell on the bay recently..

Yes Jonnie i believe they are, they have a step on both sides for the two chainrings..
So pretty sure they are a road crank.. smile.gif

No plans for building it right now, maybe someday, if I do, I have either fork to go with it. I have the round top tube pic saved to my computer, I love that build too...you build great PKs, they just look right the way you set them up and the color/parts choices...well done!!
JMCGT
Thankyou Alex..
GR8BNDINI
I've been meaning to post a comment about this bike ever since you started this thread a couple of days ago. But my feebile mind just cant come up with the right words to do this stellar build any justice (still cant). JMCGT, great work! This is a beautiful piece and a great representation of an old PK, in my world there just are'nt too many things cooler than an old SE in brown. good2.gif
Kurt.
Stunning piece of exotica Matt. Lovely job mate.

Hope you are gonna bring that baby to the Brisbane show so we can check it in the flesh!
osrlracer

nicanoia
Stunning bike...Everything's been said before, but loving the colours and details.
Were people lacing their front wheels like that back then too?
ripper185
Super sweet PK makes my RIPPER look like something the cat dragged in.
JMCGT
