So I have been looking at parts for sometime, and now it is time for a rims. Basically, for the " standard rider " such as myself, a set of pre-built rims could work ...... or do they? So many choices on Rims, Hubs, Spokes etc. The average rim set is about $300.00 give or take as where if the parts were all purchased separately on average:

Rims: (36 hole rims) $50.00 x2 = $100.00
Nipples: Alloy $15.00 x2 = $30.00
Spokes: Standard 14G. $0.50 x72 = $36.00
Hubs: Lets say $100.00 for a decent hub shall we? x2 = $200.00

Which brings us to a grand total of: $366.00 not including the assembly

So one could easily spend about $500.00 on this project. Does anyone feel this is worth it? Just curious on some input here. What are the pros/cons on this? How much weight does one save for the price? Is hub a $200.00 hub really better than a $75.00 hub? Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Man, I've had GREAT luck with the Sun Superstock wheels in both 20" and 24".

I'd say the fact that they run freewheel instead of being a cassette wheel may be their only drawback. But I don't mind that...I LOVE these wheels and have yet to bend one.

look over to the right under services, and call Kovachi Wheels, you'll be surprised at the custom wheelset he can get you set up with, and he has really good prices too IMHO.

It depends on how much you are willing to spend. And if you need it asap or are just poking around. I found an Answer Ti Expert Rear wheel for 80 bucks on Ebay. I was just waiting for a deal to pop up and it did.

Now hubs, it depends on if you want cassette in the rear and what kind of engagement you are looking for.

Man what this really boils down to is how much you want to spend. Myself I would go with pre-built if you just started racing. If you are really looking to get the most bang for your buck that is the way to go.

However, I would still call John Kovachi and see what he can hook up for you. He might be able to build you a wheelset that can handle your kind of riding for the right price.

Give John Kovachi a call. He can set you up with some nice wheels for a good price you may be surprised at what you can get. The wheels will run true and he will back them up. Prebuilts are fine but John's wheels will run true much longer. I have a et of 1 1/8 going through the 3rd kid on them. Never needed truing and still don't. I think I bought them from John in 2003. As for factory built the Sun superstocks worked great but I am sold on Kovachis customs. Nothing like some weight saved on wheels to get rolling quicker.

John is traveling this weekend to the ABA Delaware national so E-mail him. Another plus with dealing with John. He builds the wheels himself. I would bet that no one has built more bicycle wheels than John.

you should be able to get a decent pre built wheelset within your budget. keep in mind that if you spend a bit more you will get a better wheelset that you can always keep from bike to bike. building a good wheelset was the best thing i ever did, you definately notice the difference.

I had been considering these wheels: I like Kore. They were always decent in MNT bike stuff. From my understanding, they are under new ownership. I chatted with someone else here and he said he loved the hubs as well. The price is not bad, but we all know that price isn't everything wink.gif

kovachi won't let you down and nobody builds better wheels than he
the warranty can not be touched by anyone and you can take the wheelset to him 10 years later and he'll treat you like you bought the wheels 15 minutes earlier

Sun Superstocks are the way to go. $149.99. You'd be surprised how many AA Pro's are running them.

The extra price gets you a cassette hub. They are better but not so much that you'll really notice.

Go check with your local wheel builder see what he can do for you.
