"PK" does also have another meaning outside of BMX and it might fit with these hipsters, at least alot of the ones I've met it does. But maybe SE should of called it something like "PK All Day" or a "PK 24/7".

Yeah man, I'm not hip enough to get the "PK" in the non-BMX vocabulary. Enlighten us.

I may have spoke to soon about "Kids" people under 20 older than 10, not riding BMX anymore... for the first time tonight in the spot that usually has the fixed gear kids practicing some form of trick, 3 kids... 1 on a 2009 SE retro Quadangle, one a 2009 Haro freestyler, and one riding a Chrome looptail BMX bike with no markings.... it was Awesome to see...
If the 80's were the "Golden Age" of BMX perhaps the "Silver Age" is on the way?

Sweet! Just remember your scene isnt the only scene. There are plenty of strong BMX scenes around the country. It isn't like it was in the middle to late 80s but BMX still has some legs left!

Well maybe it's a West Coast thing, "Puff Kill" or PK for short, Puff=Smoke Kill=the green skunky smelling stuff.
pcohen
Here is what urban dictionary says.

pk
abbreviation for pain killer
SWIM blew a couple PKs and went to la la land

pk
commonly used in video games
meaning to kill another player, PK is abreviation for Player Kill.
whiner - OMG U WHY U PK ME?
pker - cuz i wanted ur items

pk
In Cantonese swearing, sometimes referring to "pok gai", which means trip on a street or fall down because of tripping.

Again, I love to read your guys' thoughts & opinions. I have actually crafted many a design & modification from these threads. Example: A while ago I read about some peeps wanting shorter sizes of our retro bikes. So you know there's gonna be 2 sizes of PK Loops & 20" Quad Loops next year. Short dudes (like me) rejoice! 20.5" top tubes coming your way.

And I also read on here that Steve Smith wanted a way shorter rear end on the 24" Quad Loop. It wasn't until I read that that I realized that the back end on that bike was pretty stinkin' long. So Steve, you'll be happy to know that I shortened it from 16" to 15.35".

Ok, so back to the topic at hand. Yes, it's too late to make any changes. These bikes are getting produced in the beginning of July. And take note that at first, this bike was called the "Fixie Ripper." The first 4 samples we received had these graphics. I thought they looked cool & it sounded good to me. But as I did a bit more research into the Fixed Gear culture, I learned that putting the word "Fixie" in the name of the frame is equivalent to to putting the word "BMX" on a BMX bike. Like calling a BMX bike the "BMX Shredder" or something cheesy like that. So we made the change to "PK Ripper."

The official bike name is the DCxPK Ripper Fixed Gear bike. And believe it or not, there are PLENTY of dudes in their 30's that remember the PK Ripper that are now riding these Fixed Gear bikes. It's not just the younger teen generation on these fixies. And hey, if this is the first (and probably only) way that these young guns learn about the PK Ripper, then so be it! The end result is that the PK Ripper name lives on. And nobody can fault that, right? I mean some of these Fixie kids who have never heard of the PK Ripper or Perry Kramer are going to be SO stoked to have one of these "new" bikes with Floval tubing, the classic gusset @ the headtube, the LOOPTAIL(!) rear end, the Landing Gear forks. This new version of the PK Ripper might engrave itself into these kids' brains & hearts just like your PK Ripper did back in the 80's. Feeeeeeeeel me?

The PK Ripper legacy lives on.....

Todd, you rule. I really appreciate that a lot of thought was put into the name as you have stated here. But honestly, it's not a surprise. Your product speaks for itself. The retro bikes that have been coming out show that a lot of thought has gone into every part and color--no bean counters could have come up with this and, in fact, they would have shot it all down.

I do respect the opinions of others here in regard to the PK name, but I for one get what you are doing and may go so far as to get a "Fixie Ripper" myself. I think the bike will sell well too. I'm not into fixies and I kinda want one. Anyone new to fixies who knows anything about BMX will be drawn to it, and it just looks cool so I think there will be a big market for this one.

While I am at it let me throw in that I REALLY appreciate the quality of the new bikes. I was riding my OM the other day and it really hit me how solid that bike is.

Keep it up man!

I have a sneaky suspicion this fixed gear fixation (lol) will fall flat on its face. Pretty soon they will tire (lol im ona roll here) of balancing with their bars turned at 90 degree angles, riding around with their leg through the front triangle or riding barspin wheelies. What are they gonna do? Put pegs on them and start doing cherry pickers?

I remember riding flatland freestyle down at the Seal Beach pier in 1986. A bunch of old farts used to sit around and say the same crap about us.

Let the kids play. Bikes are fun, remember?

Haha those fixie tricks look like 1980s freestyle all over again.

Then now is the time for those of us who mastered all the 1980 tricks to get into fixie trick riding and make a killing by going pro. It looks like all you need to get started is one of these new PK Rippers, some girl pants and a tight black T-shirt. After I become one of the top pros (looks like there are maybe three tricks to master), I'm going to get "$et" embroidered on the seat of my girl pants like RL Osborn had on his leathers. Or maybe "Do a Trick" like Woody.

There is nothing else I could write that would adequately mock the lameness of that video. From the music to the actual footage of these clowns, it could be one of the lamest things I've seen on youtube, and that includes Swiss Alpenhorn concerts. I know, I know -- they're having fun and doing their thing, but damn... I just have nothing else to say.

The Euro-trashiness aside, this chick is the Kevin Jones of fixie trick riding. And at the very least, it is a chick, which dials down the fruitiness factor a little. At any rate, she can definitely give those tools in the first video (the Bike Jerks -- their own name, not mine for them, by the way) a lesson or two.

What does it mean "fruity"? Wait, let me guess...

Yeah, Euro-trash indeed. This costume is "tasty"...

But to hers defense i must state, that her skills are pretty awesome and lightyears ahead of those fixie-clowns.

I did some research, cause her name sounded somehow familiar to me. Her name is Ines Brunn and guess what - she´s German. What next? LOL

Mad Cowboy:

Remember, Woody, Martin, Buff and those guys were doing the tricks on those nasty road frames in Quicksilver, they invented those tricks. Let's see those poofy le bike jerques try ANY of those Quicksilver tricks.

At least Ines Brunn has her boomerangs, backyards, surfers, barstands and gut levers dialed (thanks to the previously mentioned FS riders and others not mentioned because it has been 20 years hence, forgive my ye olde memory).

Those "artistic cyclers" are definitely talented, I'll gladly give them that credit.

But WHAT is up with those lame-o fixed gear moves? (I won't dignify calling them "tricks")

Come on, a wheel balance? Sticking your foot through the frame? Leg over the bars? I could do all of that and more when I was 10 riding a Huffy back in 1980. What makes those guys think that is talent?

By the way, I'd love to see a video of Ines Brunn rippin' it up on a BMX bike.

I know! Such lameness associated with Perry Kramer makes my skin crawl.

Oh well. I love SE and I wish Todd continued success, but the PK Fixie concept is just plain misguided. I'm sure it will be a quality frame, but those fixie boys have no concept of the roots of the legendary name, PK Ripper means nothing to them, how many times can we say this?

Todd, please reconsider!

Jive, you guy hit the nail.

But as mentioned before, it´s a lot about business and making bucks. Todd seems to be a clever guy and knows that one should strike while the iron's hot.
And to be honest, those Fixi-Clowns are there to be taken to the cleaners. They deserve it.

Over here in Germany, singlespeed and fixie bikes are all the rage right now.
Especially in big cities like Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or Cologne, you can find them all over the place.
Those urban well-to-do hipsters are willing to pay more for a highend single speed, than for a car.

Fair enough.

I don't have a problem with SE marketing to Fixie-Tards (they already make mountain bikes and road bikes) just don't do it with the most famous BMX bike in the world. It's like calling a brand new Honda coupe a Galaxie 500...yes, they have wheels, other than that two are totally unrelated.

Sorry guys, but the integrity of BMX heritage should be maintained.

By the way, I scoped out a black/white OM Flyer at the LBS today....$460...sounds cheap and I don't know squat about the quality of new school components, but it looks cool.

The PK brand doesn't just do something for 40 year old dudes. I'm a 43 year old former 'powderpuff' racer, and I used to think the kids were staring at me because I'm an 'old woman' compared to them. Not so....

They're staring at my bike, and I think that's pretty frickin' cool. Not to mention this bike rocks, handles great, and since I accidentally got about two feet of air off the first jump I hit on my first day on a track in 25 years, I'm happy it was while I was riding the PK. Now I'm back racing again, and it's on a cruiser. I wish they had older womens' 20" classes, because I would tear it up on this bike. I might just enter a 17 and over race anyways.

I have mixed feelings about the use of a name with the history behind it that the 'PK Ripper' brand carries, but ultimately I know that MY bike is the real deal, lol....

Just my two cents.
PS: this bike does nice tailwhips, too. Remember when we used to do freestyle tricks on our race bikes? Well, we did up here in Poughkeepsie, anyways....

Yes I agree that SE and Todd are doing a great job with the PK, Quad, OM, Floval reissues.....I think they are truly fantastic.

It's just that PK fixie thing that gets under my skin, it's not right. Hey I have no objection to SE making fixie/road bikes at all....GT, Haro, crap everyone branched out to MTB and road....I don't mind that at all, you have to be versatile to survive in the bike industry. However, attaching the incredibly famous, legendary BMX name of PK RIPPER to a weinie road bike is beyond comprehension. Plus, it devalues the good PK name.

I am curious to know if Perry Kramer himself has any opinion on the matter. Afterall, it is his name affixed to the both frames. Seriously, WHO is going to "rip it up" on a fixie???

Todd, man....I love what you are doing with SE BMX, I really do, but I really wish you would reconsider the fixie name.
pcohen
Hey JiveHandle... You missed this in Todds reply on page 2 of this thread. If the man himself is stoked... it can't be all wrong.

While I get your point and am actually all for Todd and SE making lots of money so they can keep cranking out cool retro BMX stuff, how does using the PK Ripper name (a name that means nothing to the majority of the fixie crowd) sell fixies? Todd never answered me on that. I fail to see why SE building a fixie and calling it the Ripper or some other non BMX name would draw less than using the name PK Ripper. That is my point, there is not advantage to "throw the pearl to swine".
