Isn't it awesome? I raced last year on New Years Night for the first time since 87. All I had was a mid 90s mongoose cruiser that I bought a week before. It was cold, very late (races had to start after midnight for some reason) and the couple of 36 & over guys were only racing class. In fact, almost nobody was riding cruiser that night and I was bumped down to 10 & 12 yr old cruisers...on my first "race" in 21 years!! lol

I thought about smoking em out the gate, bustin out an awesome crossup over the doubles (actually no lip table jump with minor lull in the middle ..sigh) and wheelying the entire last straight for the win, but since it was the last race of the season and those little guys had probably been battling it out all year, I coasted the whole track. Kinda sucked for being first race back, but I had a blast just getting back out there again.

Something else funny happened that night. As I was unloading my mid 90's CHROME Expert Pro goose cruiser (see below) from the truck, a 10 or 12 year old kid and his father walked up to me and said...

"ooooh is that chromoly??" like they had just seen some ancient artifact they've only read about in history books.

Bewildered, I replied, "why yes it is. Why do you ask?"

The father chimes in to his son "and look, it's even chrome!"

I raised an eyebrow at these two and thought to myself..."wtf??"

then the father asked me "mind if I pick it up?"

im like "umm...ok go for it."

I soon realised that chromoly WAS some ancient artifact that people had only read in history books (old BMX Actions) and I was the only person there with a chrome bike! I dont know what was more stranger. Me having a chrome bike in this day and age, or this kid and having never seen one. Times have certainly changed.

ok..sorry for hijacking your thread with some stupid story about me. Welcome back to your childhood!!

Keep it up, bro. I picked up a mid school Haro and started out again recently as well. My daughter has raced once, and I am stoked to see her out there. This is a great sport, and a great way for a family to spend a day together.

That's great. Where did you take him? I'm curious because the closest tracks from Queens are either Howell, NJ or Shoreham (Suffolk County) and that pic of your son is not either one of those tracks.

NY - i'm glad you got back into it! I can't believe i ever quit either... are you going crazy like me??? My kid can't even ride yet and she has TWO micro-mini's in the house and i bought myself a starter cruiser since my cousin won't give me back my BOSS... now i'm freaking out because my bike is too heavy and i didn't win!!! (been looking at parts all day to order them ASAP to fix the bike up)

I guess once BMX gets in your blood it's there for good.... lol... I sure do miss my home track though... i have to drive an hour to get to yukon... Santa Clara was 3 miles from my mom's house...

good luck to you and your son! don't forget to have someone take pictures of you and videos!!! YouTube baby!!!!!

Thanks. I'm planning on taking my son to the National at Trumbull, CT, which is July 24 - 26. Being a former Queens guy, I guess I figured you'd go to Long Island (even though its Suffolk) before you'd go to CT. I guess they're equidistant depending upon what part of Queens you are in. If you live in Whitestone or College Point, CT is closer; if you live in Bayside (unless you live right by the bridge - Throgsneck) you might go to east to Suffolk County.

I live in New Hyde Park now. CT has races on Saturdays gives me a day of rest before heading back to work. Long Island races on Sundays. I'm old need to recover

I ran my first race since 1986 this past Sunday at CJBMX. I was the slowest one in my class (40-44 cruiser), but I had a BLAST!!

I lost about 5 lbs in sweat and I thought I was going to drop by the end of the first race, let alone the main, but I can't wait to go back again. It's killing me that we're going away this weekend and I'll have to wait another week.

Thanks for the complement. Sorry I did not talk longer. That tall guy had me going pretty good with my gates. Are you going to be there this Saturday? If you are hit me up.
