Full Version: What year were Araya Super 7X rims introduced?
VintageBMX.com > VintageBMX Talk > Mid School BMX
Pauly
I'm guessing early 90s, but I'm hoping late 80s?
kcmobmx
mid-90s, I remember 94-95ish...
Nbl 49a
Kcmo is correct on the dates there.. Super 7x's were the next model after the Rb-17 which was introducrewd in 92-ish. The Rb-17 was Araya's first double wall bmx rim.

i remember first seeing them in 93 at South Park on some of the GT team bikes, which if they were being spec'd for the new bikes, those would have been 94 models
DemonGT
late 95

gt team bikes didnt come with the super 7x's till 96

yeh i would say mid 90's, i rememebr when I first say these rims. And when I finally got a pair they were awsome and everyone had them.

ok, what about the plain 7x rims.. they were a double wall also right??
and when did these come into play

also when did araya actually stop making bmx rims, i know they still do wheelchair stuff
Dallis
I have some on my 20" still... lol
joelwitte
ya its kinda funny on my end too

i still rock a pair of what were sweet rims i bought back in 95 maybe
just rebuilt my hubs via crupi parts a month ago
araya super 7x, tnt revolver h/f hubs, dt swiss stainless double butted spokes and black alloy nipples

The 7X was a single wall rim. they started making those in the early 80s into the early 90s. Araya still produces rims for bmx today but they are not marked in the US.
joelwitte
really, i'd love to still use their hoops
where are they available? any ideas?
kcmobmx
do a google search and you will find their website. they should have a list of retailers there.
Dallis
I might sell my 48X Super 7's soon.
Secret Spin
i noticed the early araya super 7x's were labeled "special edition" instead of "super 7x"
during the mid 90's. i have a cruiser set laced to DK hubs and i have seen others labeled as such including some 20" ones.
Nbl 49a
Please correct me if I am wrong but to my knowledge all the 24" hoops were marked special edition and not super 7x. It has nothing to do with the date. All the 20" wheels were marked as super 7xs and both sizes are double wall and exactly the same. My Technique was sold to me as having 24" super 7x wheel (og owner removed the stickers) but to my knowledge they are special editions.

So is the "special" part just mean 24 not 20 inch?
Nbl 49a
To my knowledge yes. Special Edition is for the 24".

Stephen
Race Inc dude
how about something like this

on ebay now

Stephen,

You are correct with the Special Edition being 24" and Super 7x being 20"... Kovachi Wheels started building wheels with them around '95 and the best new suprise about them was that you could accidentally drop a nipple inside the double wall rim while building the wheel... and once you did that, it could be crazy tough to get out, but you had to or else the wheel would make the worst rattling noise when it spun... tongue.gif

Hey guys, I'm picking up a 24" today and selling off my 20". It has 48 spoke Super 7x's with DB hubs. I can take pics later but I'm not certain if it's worth parting the bike out vs selling it complete. I bought this wheel set new separate from the bike and rode on it once in awhile. I do know a few spokes are loose from time but I'd be happy to have them trued before sending. Any ideas on value?
Dallis
Wheels looked fine, but I'm getting them trued anyway. They still have the stickers on them and everything. I feel an eBay auction coming on...
Criscobath
I have a pair of Araya SEs on my XL24 and love them. Nicest chrome ever on a rim.
S&MMATT
super 7x's are my all time favs! i have recently laced a very old(96ish) set to my current hubs for my flatland bike. they are a little pitted and one has some brake rub, but i know they will last forever.
ricksimpson
I have an extra set for the right offer

Would you consider a trade for a 1 year old Beagle/Pugg mix?

i also know someone with a set of regular chrome 24" araya 7x single wall hoops from the mid/late 90's with the special edition stickers on them...i asked him if he did that and he said thats the way they came...i believe him cuz he's not the type to care about details like that...unless the place he bought them from new did that for some reason...?

i know i havent ever seen a super 7x decal for the 24" ones and they all got the special edition stickers....but i have seen a set of araya super 7x 20" hoops from around '93-'95 that also came with only the special edition stickers...i think they came that way in 20" too at very first.
RodneyR
Still racing on my special ed. 24s ! Super nice chrome.no pits . Araya did a great job with these!!

i'm still riding mine. 48's on a 20". i need to sell these and get something with 36h and micro drive. the wheels are by far the heaviest part of my bike right now. and by heaviest, i mean relative to what's commonly available. oh, or maybe it's the og redneck.

gawd my bike was a tank in the 90's and it so shouldn't have had to be. too bad that's pretty much all that was available. i feel so liberated with the uber new school stuff.
