I just read this on the s&m site.

"Clymer Lives
Friday got pretty crazy we had Sean Mckinney, Neal Wood, Jason Ball, Chad Johnson, Freddy Chulo, Midget Cory, and the one and only Dave (Can't Die) Clymer all here hanging out telling awesome stories.

For any one that knows Dave Clymer, you know he can't be stopped. About a year ago while working doing iron work he got catapulted off of a beam 30 feet in to the air and landed on the pavement. he broke just about everything in him, he was in the hospital for a few months. So he decided to show up on Friday riding a bike! He can not be stopped.

To illustrate what I'm talking about i heard a story from back in the day he was at a race and every time he went in to a berm one guy would pass him, so he decided that would just gap from the roller that led in to the berm all the way over to the roller out of the berm. So he did, he jumped the gap, about 10" wide and took first place. They tried to deny him the win but his tires never touched. Can't be stopped.

Dave's signature frame was the Holmes frame, we have decided that we are going to make a supper limited run of the exact frame he use to ride. They look like they will be available in about a month or so. We will also have the Fork, stem and headset to match. I can only imagine how excited most of you just got.

Chris said that they will be the same price as the New Dirtbike... $369.99

I think I paid around $300 for my Holmes f/f back in 1992 so not really that much difference there.

jaybrand
A chrome Holmes was $179.95 in 93.

That I dont know. I'm just relaying info I read elsewhere.

I can't wait to see this thing!

I am betting that $369 is just for the frame. American made frames cost alot, but are worth the money and the pride that goes with them.

If anyone wants to get in a Vintage Clymer mood while waiting for the frameset, here are some clips on You Tube. I'd link to them, but I'm a computer 'tard and it never works when I try to link to You Tube for some reason...
Search these:

The Ultimate Weekend POW/S&M section (1990)

Dave Clymer in S&M's Feel My Leg Muscles (1991)

Mission Trails KOD from S&M's Feel My Leg Muscles (1991)

Full Disclosure... I'm the guy who shot all this video

Did you know that the Holmes frame was named after porn star John Holmes because it was the extra long model? You probably knew that. Did you know that Moeller once tyed with the idea of making flesh colored top tube stickers with bulging veins? Bet you didn't know that one.

Good info, Steve!

Here are the links for anyone:

Mission Trails

Chris Moeller

Jimmy Levan

Dave Clymer

Alex Leech

I'm the one who put the clips up on youtube(not the Ultimate Weekend one, though I still have that on VHS). I left a comment on your blog when you mentioned these back in 2008(just left the comment a week or so ago), but to repeat myself, thank you , thank you, thank you.

And I think I speak for everyone here in the mid-school, you are ALWAYS welcome to share any stories or whatever here, especially S&M stories, info, whatever!

thewhitebear43
Thanks for putting up the links Matt. I've lived pretty much offline until a few months ago, and I'm a tard when it comes to computers. So basic things like linking rarely work for me. My name's Steve Emig, I was one of the P.O.W.'s, the only flatland guy of the bunch, and I edited the first two S&M videos, "Feel My Leg Muscles... I'm a Racer," and "44 Something." I'm currently doing a blog called "FREESTYLIN' Mag Tales" about my short stint working at BMX Action and FREESTYLIN' mags back in '86. I got laid off, and they hired Spike two months later. Anyhow, I lost 2o years worth of bike and other video footage six months ago. That was most of my life's work. So I've been writing like a crazy man (which many people think I am) to get my memories in a readable form for a few months now. Much to my surprise, a lot of people read it. I'm also starting to write some old school stories for the Dig BMX site. So that's the introduction.
I was roommates with Moeller on and off from about '91 to '95. I was there when he was running S&M out of the garage of a one bedroom apartment, up until he bought a condo and had a small warehouse. I've been driving him, Timmy (Jason) Ball, Barspinner, and other Sheep Hills locals around as a taxi driver for 4 of the last 5 years. Now A LOT of people have been wanting me to go off on Moeller, because there are so many crazy stories about him. He built S&M on crazy jumping, beer, and nudity in the early years. But he's trying downplay the past now that he's doing really well. The point is... if any of you have questions about those days, I'll try to answer them if I can. I'm not going to get into the personal craziness. But if you have questions about the company or the riding, throw them up here, and I'll see if I can answer them.
It's good to see Clymer getting a frame again...
thewhitebear43
Matt S. just aksed me a few questions, a couple of which I'll answer here in case anyone else wants to know.

What happened to S&M guys Crazy Red and Brian Hernendez?

I don't know. Crazy Red, (Mike Carlson) does a big tailwhip in The Ultimate Weekend clip linked above, and he does the huge 360 into the crowd in the Mission Trails clip. That was the first tailwhip landed in a video, in 1990. Anyone who's watched recent clips knows the influence that's had. Kids do tailwhips out of the womb nowadays. He just disappeared in the early '90's. I remember seeing him showing up at the POW House in '92 or so, then just vanishing from our radar. I don't know what Brian Herndez is up to. I never hung around him much. I thought he kept racing.

What's the deal with Greg Scott and Chris Moeller in the early days of S&M?

Way back in the dark ages of 1987, a couple of freestylers named Steve Emig (me) and Mike Sarrail decided they wanted to make a national zine about BMX freestyle, and maybe do a video. So they took the initials of their first names, and started S&M Productions. We made 50 T-shirts with a silohuette of a guy doing a turndown that said "S&M Productions We're Coming..." to announce the idea. Then we lagged and never got it going.
Little did we know that a couple of BMX racer/jumper guys had a similar idea. Greg Scott and Chris Moeller got tired of bending rear dropouts jumping, so they went to a welding shop called B&E, who made frames for several bike companies. Greg and Chris asked if they could get a bike made with two dropouts welded side by side to make them stronger. The welding shop said they could do it and made the guys a couple frames. That bike was called the Mad Dog, Moeller's knickname from high school wrestling. Then other riders wanted Chris and Greg to make them bikes with the double thick dropouts, too. Scott and Moeller took their last initials and started S&M Bicycles. For three or four years, they made a a batch of frames every now and then, and "sponsored" all the crazy jumper guys like Dave Clymer. They didn't have much money, but they had bikes with thick dropouts, uniforms, and all the best jumpers of the day. Now the story I've heard, mostly from Moeller, was that Chris wanted to put all the money into buying more frames and bars to sell, and Greg wanted to rent an office, get furniture, and stuff like that. So there was a basic incompatibility between them business-wise. Chris Moeller's primary influence in business is his Grandpa, who owned a construction equipment company. Grandpa had a saying Chris often repeats, "Partners are good... for dancing." Grandpa's belief was that business partners always ended up pissing each other off eventually. By 1990, it was pretty evident that Chris was the more serious about the business, so he borrowed $1200 from grandpa, bought out Greg, and changed the name to S&M Bikes. Chris got down to business, buying a batch of frames and bars, selling them as quickly as possible, and re-investing the money in more stuff to sell. In this way, he built what is now S&M and Fit bikes completely without debt, which is pretty dang amazing.
Matt S.
Steve,

Great info. As I mentioned, I was always curious about their partnership. Back in the day I always just assumed they were the best of friends. I mean, they WERE "S" AND "M"! But all the interviews in the past years with Chris Moeller, you hear very little about Greg(actually, as many have read, very little about the early days at all from Chris).

And so as not to get too off topic, I never knew that the Holmes was Dave Clymer's signature frame since it seemed everyone was riding the Holmes after it came out(except maybe Keith Treanor and Alex Leech?).

Here is one you might know, Steve. Who did the art for the Mad Dog, 1st Dirtbike, and 1st Holmes decals? I'm a little biased being an S&M fan, but the decals almost seem iconic now, perfect for the frames-at least the early ones.

Curious as to which Holmes stickers this new frame and fork will come with.

thewhitebear43
I don't know who did the early artwork for S&M. Chris did some of it, I think. He'd usually get an idea, then find someone to make a sticker out of it. I remember the rooster head tube stickers were like that. More sexual innuendo.
S&M was built on crazy antics, both on and off the bike. Chris would very much like to forget those days. He lives in the moment. But those days are legendary, and legends are not soon forgotten. I just wrote about Chris in my blog, "FREESTYLIN' Mag Tales."
Even though it looked way to long for him, Dave Clymer rode a Holmes, as did most of the racers. Keith Treanor rode a Dirtbike, and so did I. It had a shorter, more freestyle feel to it, except the head tube was too laid back for flatlanding.

hey steve emig,
is this a photo of the pow house?
i saved this pic to my computer a long while ago... i thinks its the pow house....
if so can you tell us who is in this pic and who's bike is who's in this pic as well?

thewhitebear43
Yeah, that's the POW house. I wasn't sure at first, but that's Clymer's brown car and Lonegran's blazer in the background. I think the VW truck was John Paul Roger's. It looks like Sal (Chris Sales) leaning over the truck. Not sure about the other guys. Might be Clymer in the blue sweatshirt. Not sure about the others. At any given time we had 1 to 10 people from somewhere else sleeping on the couches and floor. So those guys could be anybody. Looks like they're heading out for a group session, which means they're waiting for Lawan to get his butt movin'...

sorry to hijack the thread, kinda.. i'm been a standard rider for 15 years but i ALWAYS loved the s&m stuff, even to this day, along with the story behind the company as i've followed it since about '93

but yes, you couldn't have stated it more clearly with your quote,
the challenger international was always my favorite s&m frame but then again, i've never rode a holmes
nintendoninja
sorry to put this derailed train back on track but does anyone know when this new oldschool holmes will be on the streets??? wub.gif

I was thinking about trying to find some Holmes stickers if I was to ever get the new Dirt Bike with the 21.25tt... That would pretty much be a new Holmes...

Brian
Matt S.
Pics are up on S&M's site of some random pieces and the stickers. LOVE it that it will have the original Holmes stickers. Props to the one who decided that!

Not to put a damper on anything, but I hope it will be 1 1/8" frame and fork. I think if S&M came out with an EXACT replica of an original Holmes(1") and charged $350+ for it, I don't know, doesn't seem like something S&M would do, ya know, just cash in on the "richie" bmx collectors paying big bucks for old bmx bikes and parts to put them in a case or whatever. ohmy.gif

If I could swing it, I'd love to grab a new Holmes that looks like the old one but had a little updating.

Really? Think about it.. it's a US made frame AND fork.. chromed for 470. Most US made frames are 400.. forks 150.. chrome.. your right arm. 470 is a lot of cash, for sure, but when you break it down it's highly competitive.

Even the painted one.. it's like getting the forks for $30...

Here's another little known S&M tidbit. The cops in Huntington Beach are known for pulling over bikes on the 4th of July and confiscating them. So Chris had the welding shop make him one with a serial number that read F*** You, actually spelled out of course. The idea was that the cop would have to read it and write it on the ticket. That was '92-94, somewhere in that range. and Chris never got pulled over.

Boozer... PM me if you can. I'm in North Carolina at the moment.
