Next to finding 1975 Mongoose frames, I think finding NOS Mongoose decals from the 70's is almost as difficult...

I was as happy as a little kid when these arrived from Jeremy K. in Hawaii. One of the nicest guys around, he has now scored two sets of these for me!

I thought a few of the Mongoose fanatics around here might want to see some pictures of these as I opened the pack.

Wow They look mint!

Nice...look mint. I think the gold seat stay bands were later in the motomag era...80ish.

I checked the earliest dates that the gold bands appeared and this is what I found out...

The Gold bands were being used on colored Teams and nickel Minigoose bikes in 1978. There are a few Team frames from late '77 that also have them.

They were also used on the first 1979 nickel Supergoose bikes...

Waza posted the different combinations that were being used after 1980.

Waza's Quote:

From around 1980, the 1/2 cromo goose frames had different color wraps, depending on frame color

white, yellow, nickel = plum
blue, black, red = gold

That seems to be correct, Pete. I think the ones used on the full cromo bikes (team, super, team mini, etc) were gold but they were prism...not straight foil like your NOS set.

I think the gold foil like yours would have been used as per your quote from Waza but I could be wrong blink.gif

Yup, I hear what you're saying '76. BTW, those builds are stunning!!! ohmy.gif

For sure there was some yellow/gold bands around in '78 on the bikes we've discussed... As early as '77 on some of the first Teams too.

I believe they were simply referred to as "stripes" in the old catalogues when they described the decal packs...

Anyhow, it's somewhat hard to tell if they were always prismatic back then from the old photos.

The ones in this package or obviously not, but I seem to recall JK telling me the owner of the bike shop - where these came from - held onto them from the late 70's. Not quite sure...

It always amazes me that no matter how many people study and collect these bikes, the minutiae is never quite certain and many details regarding them continue to remain nebulous.

It bodes very well for Skip and the incredible legacy he's left regarding such an important bicycle in the history of BMX.

Gooseheads... Forever united! laugh.gif
