Before watching adjust your sissy bars, lube your double telescoping forks, polish your motomags on your Webco's, put on your round motocross number plate and Kawasaki jersey. Remember the days of sidehack lore.

So Cal NBA Promo

I don't know if it was mentioned before, but this is quite an awesome Auld Skool Video.

Racer
Wow was that awesome. BMX before even I started (I started in 78).
Did you see how smooth and stylish David Clinton was?? Wow he was the Craig Reynolds of his time.
David for those that dont know was #1 in the Kawasaki jersey. Can anyone name the #2 rider or any of the other riders in Clintons moto?
I think the long haired guy may have been Dennis Dain for Gary Littlejohn or was that John Palfreyman or Eric Shimp or??
#2 must have been factory and famous also but cant put a name to him.

John McNiel
I hadn't seen that before - awesome!
I love how everyone just launches off of the jumps...man that's bmx.

You just want to crawl into that video and live it.
Reilley1
#2 is Bobby Encinas, the long haired guy is the late Billy Wouda, #14 is John George, #29 is JP, #27 is Thom Lund from the infamous Rick's Bike Shop team. The guys on the hack are JP and Dougie Palfreyman and the track is Yarnell. I forgot some of the other cats in the video but I know that the footage came courtesy Rick Twomey
Kazman
The production value on that is incredible. Wow.
Greyryder
Sidehacks! I've seen them before, but never in an actual race.

Seems like the tracks were a lot longer, back then. Better yet, they were made out of dirt.

Rick hit all the answers but 1 and he will either correct it or just laugh at himself. Rick is a total Rick's Bike Shop fan and for him to misquote himself is hystericical. The guys on the hack are JP (John Palfreyman) and Dougie "Takahashi" is the correct name. tongue.gif

Yes the track is Yarnell, up in Sylmar in the San Fernando Valley. It was filmed in 74 or 75. That is the track where Oz and Windy did mine and Steves sidehack interview in the 2nd issue of BMX Action magazine. Great track! We would walk the track on race day and just kick the bigger rocks out of the way. The loose dirt, sand, and small rocks were just part of the track.

Oh yea, good times!!!

Easily one of the best all time old school BMX videos out there... sun_bespectacled.gif

An amazing time capsule!

Huge props should go to Ben Joy for putting together Twomey's old footage for this Youtube clip.

Easily my favorite bmx vid yet . biggrin.gif Bring back the water gap jumps !

How come we never really had sidehack racing at East Coast nationals BITD? I'm sure I would have gotten one and recruited a good 10x rider like Scott Lowe down the street from me and kicked butt. Nobody was really selling them much. That's just unfortunate. Anyway, I've watched this vid over a lot. Watched it again this evening. I think it must be better than the Giro coverage. The heart beat is class work. I've got a pic of Larry here with his leather garden gloves on at Rockville Gude Dr. like in the vid. Back then the only tradition was MX tradition, so people were a little more creative in BMX applications.

I just watched it again. Got goosebumps. Back to the real world.

I had a hack I got from WWR team bitd Bob . We got to race it a little . Mainly at the Iron man classic and state races . I only recall about 5-6 hacks being arround the east then .

By todays standard, a sidehack is a dinosaur. (as am I) laugh.gif

On the negative side is that todays tracks are flat. In itself a dissability for one guy to have to drag around a passenger. The other thing is a hack is not convienent to transport to distant races.

On the possitive side, the 2 tracks I have ridden a hack on in the past couple of years have huge, wide, bowl berms. Lots of room to attempt to pass if you have experience in such matters. (those of you that have seen the video of Relilley and I at Roseville will understand)

But still, there is NOTHING that can compare to riding a hack on a downhill. Weather riding or watching, a hacks hayday was the downhills of the 70s.
Reilley1
Thanks Red...
Feel all stooopid now smile.gif

Yah, racing hacks is great fun but racing hacks downhill was an experience of a lifetime

5:30-5:45 is especially awesome. I would love to hear from present-day pros on a "what if" scenario. What if the next-gen tracks had the normal SX components, but the last half of the track like this, where you had to pedal, pedal, pedal through flat turns and such?

I would love to see this "Blended old and new school BMX" approach. I have a feeling some of the present-day "naturals" both from the US and abroad would see some mixing of the finishes, given the change in course.

OOoo, Ahhh!!! ohmy.gif

I like your thinking Mike.

That film makes me feel like a kid again. It shows BMX as it was. It really takes you back to the era. I want to ride those bikes again. Hell, I want to ride tracks like that again!

It was a very good production as well. Must have cost a fortune to edit that piece on old 1" or 2" reel to reel tape and clunky edit controllers. Much respect to the creators, wherever they are nearly 40 years later.

Hey, I'm on the same page Red and Mike! BMX needs some new (old) ideas.
The Red Baron
Hey TimL, do still have that footage of Reilley and I from the 07 Roseville hack race? smile.gif
TimL
Yes, I will have to send you a care package along with those Worlds photos!
jjwouda
All those involved in this video as well as the history they've made in BMX are amazing. I wish my father (Billy Wouda) was still alive to see all this and be a part of it. Seeing something like this brings a part of him back to me & I thank those who have helped make that happen good3.gif
The Red Baron
Hello young Mr Wouda. It must be a little strange to see this footage of your father show up on the internet. I remember racing your dad when I ventured up to the LA NBA tracks. Back then it was just another day in the life of a teen ager. I don't remember your dad having the attitude that so many of the valley guys had.

+1 That vid was too cool. I remember dirt like that, and how snakebellys just didnt cut it.

Hello there everyone..just wanted to say something real quick..I am Billy Wouda's daughter Jenelle..I think those of you who knew my dad was thinking I was my little brother Bobby Wouda..I will be sure to tell him that some of you guys said hi...just wanted ya'll to know. biggrin.gif
The Red Baron
I am so sorry Jenelle. As I said earlier, I raced your father in the 70s, but like a lot of us we went our seperate ways soon thereafter. I only found out about Billy's passing a couple of years ago. At that time I was told he had a son, I did not know about a daughter. I hope you are well.

I see you are in SoCal still (the high desert?). If you are interested in meeting some of your fathers old friends, there is a 'gathering' here in the SoCal area this weekend.
