Been following the vintage scene for a while now and havent been able to afford get into until now. I came across these 2 bikes on CL.

first one is an old mongoose with faded blue tuffs. Its kinda rough but it has some potential

Seond one is pretty clean californian with peregrine(?) mags. Looks to be about half stock..

also got tioga handlebars with a diamond back stem on it.

I fianlly got something vintage!! w00t!
MadCowboy
If someone knows what year the bikes are off the top of their head, Id love to know. Save me the time to research it.

thanks

Looks like OGK (GT) mags to me.....nice scores!!
MadCowboy
Well I have an old dyno with some OGK mags that have a different design to them. I thought the old GTs came with peregrines with this same spoke design? Thats purely from memory and I certainly could be wrong.

these say OGK on the dyno.... Ill take a closer look on the californian

edit: and looking at them now, they have the same design around the hub area. You are probably correct then

What kind of forks and decals did the 79 come with? The Tange forks and motomag decal? Did all of them come stock with motomags around that time? thanks for the help Ken.

edit: i guess some came stock with tuffs? Did they have the motomag decal on them?
aluv
awesome scores man! good deal.

second look, I agree, those appear to be GT mags. Save'em for your freestyle build!
MadCowboy
After looking closer, the mags on the californian do not say OGK anywhere on them. I even took off a tire and looked in the tube area.

The ones on the dyno definitely say OGK on the plastic in between the spokes.
Ken Pliska
For 1979, Ashtabula, Tange, DeCoster, or even Mongoose Forks are correct. The bulk of them had the Motomag decal even though they were sold with Motomags, Tuffs, HD Steel Femco or Arayas, Lesters and other wheel options at most Schwinn dealers.

mongoose forks? As in the ones that came on the later models...like the californian there?

when did they come out with those forks? I thought those came out a few years later.
Ken Pliska
The early Mongoose forks from the late 1970s, not the ones from the California era. They are very similar to the DeCoster and would be found on the early Team Goose models as well. They were available in the late 1970s.

Nice score!

Peregrines don't have reflector tabs, and they only have one rib per spoke. There were a lot of look-alike mags that came on stock freestyle bikes, that's probably what your Californian has.

What's the stem on the '79? Looks like an Anlun (it may be stamped Haro or Group 1).

Check out the restoration forum, I think there are some tips on restoring those blue Tuffs.

damn good eye you got there. Thats exactly what it is. It has Anlun stamped on the top. The bars i have no clue the type. The cranks I believe are the stock Ashtabulas. They have "A 79" on the bar beween the bearrings. I think the sprocket is a schwinn, or thats what one of the gooses in the museum says it is on one that looks exactly the same.

ive been checking out the resto tips for the tuffs and the frame in that section. Not sure I trust the dying tip. Dyes seem to wash away. I think the light sanding is the way to go on them. Will get better informed beforehand, for sure tho.

thanks for info!

After browsing this forum for 2 years with an overwhelming amount of envy for you guys, I finally get something of value (to me) and you ask if Im gonna sell it? lol snowballs and Hades comes to mind.

Now if someone offered an 82 nora cup GT (my holy grail) for it, it would be in a box within the hour, but that aint likely to happen. Sorry my friend, I doubt I will be giving this up anytime soon.

Not trying to insult you my friend just simply stating that if ya wanted to sell i would be interested thats all. I already have an 84 cali built up nos, I just like mongoose plain and simple so sorry if I ruffled ya feathers.

No offense taken, bro!

I aplogize if I sounded like I did. I didnt mean to. You certainly didnt ruffle any feathers. It actually felt good to have someone want something that I have, for once.

Surprisingly, ive had more offers on the spray bombed dyno than i ever would have expected. Ive had it hanging in my shed for a few years and never really considered it "a score". I wasnt into the freestyle scene so it hasnt ever been anything of value to me. It just goes to show, one man's trash is another man's treasure.
