Everyday I read through this thread which brings back so many memories
about our beloved sport and a great rider that I believe was a great
human being. For those of you that were not around in the 70's
with everything being so care free and the incredible racers such
as Anthony....you sure missed out on a great era!
But again I ask why does God take away the good ones?
God speed to you Anthony and hopefully there's a gold
Jag waiting for you at the gates of heaven. Peace....

I always enjoyed watching Anthony Sewell at the big races, he was so fast. It's very sad to hear of his passing.

Hello Rita and Charlotte,
It broke my heart to hear that Anthony had left us, yet my heart is
"Happy for Anthony" to be at peace, to be with the Lord...
Anthony was, and always will be a good soul, and I've only wanted the
best for him.
From the moment I met Anthony, I knew he could make a difference. I saw
in Anthony, a kindness towards others that is rare.
He was driven, striving for more, despite challenges in life, including a
health condition (that he only shared with a few), he did not use these
challenges to gain sympathy, but rather, as motivation to overcome hurdles
in life.
The time I spent with Anthony, racing, riding for fun, enjoying our time
on the set of CHiPs, will aways be precious to me.
It was truly a pleasure seeing and spending time with Anthony at
the Bellflower event on August 23rd, 2008. It had been so many
years since I had seen Anthony, yet the kind and gentle soul remained.
Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, and the rest of
Anthony's family during this difficult time.
All my best,
Danny Oakley

I have met many of my BMX hero's, however Anthony was one that I had missed. I wish I had been lucky enough to have at least once. His presence was felt all the way here in Hawaii. As kids we had many a debate over who was the best or fastest. Anthony was always one in the debate. It was easy to see just by size how strong or fast some of the pros were, and being in Hawaii not many of us became 6 foot tall. But then there was Anthony who seemed about the same size as most of us here. This was so inspiring that he was so fast and gave us hope to someday be great racers without being 6 foot tall.
I bid you a fond Aloha,
Jason Chang

QUOTE (The Red Baron @ Apr 6 2009, 05:33 PM)

For those of you that don't know, Anthony was an 'inner city' kid from one of the tuff areas of Los Angeles. I grew up not far from that area and was always told to avoid going in 'that' direction. 'That' area is where he called home and as far as I know he never left it. Life came hard for him and delt him some health challenges. They were not self induced, just a challenge to be delt with. And that is what he did. He never complained, he was too busy smiling.
He was given the opprotunity to race BMX, and as most of you know, he made the most of it. He took on all commers with his natural abilities and weather you liked him or not his shear spin speed commanded respect. Many of the fastest racers of all time were doomed to watch Anthony from behind but every one of those same racers were blessed to share in the glow of his wonderful smile that could not help but light the surroundings of wherever he was.
At this time, we know he died in his sleep. If we find specific reasons that are appropriate to share, it will be done. But know that he lived a good life, he was an asset to our community and to to the world, and he will be missed and also remembered.
With tears in my eyes, I am proud to call Anthony my friend.
Dennis Dain,
Anthony was one of the "all time, all timers". He was kickin' butt in what I refer to as the "hey day" of BMX.....biased of course, as this is when I raced. Thanks for the insight Red Baron.

I never met Anthony, but around 1979/80 he came to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and he was one of the reasons why BMX took off in these parts. In 1983, I was responsible for building a new track in Edmonton and it was named "Edmonton Jag BMX".
My deepest condolences to the Sewell Family.

I haven't been able to post for awhile and want to send my deepest condolences to the Sewell family. I wasn't super close to Anthony but he was ALWAYS a gentleman racing. If you beat him or he beat you he was right there to say good race. After a race once in North Carolina I think, A bunch of pro's were trying to get out sunday night and not have to wait until monday. I walked into Sewell, Bottema, Ruminer, and Toby. So we all decide to go to the bar and get a beer. I was 20 and the only one they carded. I made excuses like my wallet was in my bike box so I had to order a coke. Sure they made fun of me but I never lost my sense of awe of who I was sitting with. Hall Of Famers in my mind even then. I walked to my plane to Nebraska and just thought I was sitting next to Sewell and the others and it still feels like I'm looking up to Anthony. He was an icon and I feel fortunate to have got to race him in the Golden era. R.I.P Anthony. You were loved.
