they came and told the dynapepe ladies to stop giving out product so they did then they started giving out free shirts and hats, then they went to lunch when they came back they where told to leave to premises or they would be arrested. so they left with the police escort no wonder the nbl is lossing motos and sponsors we probley lost that one so its kinda like the triggle down effect so anyone out there thatwants to sponsor a sport don't go race nbl. very sorry run bussiness they have going!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I'm trying to understand why they would want anyone to stop giving away anything. Isn't that sort of a normal promotional tactic? Doesn't it help motivate the fans? maybe one of the people that had something to do with it, or understands the logic behind this could chime in.

If you are sponsored by Intense/DynaPep then you should at least spell your sponsors name correctly.

I always thought, that if it was in your pit's you could do whatever you wanted? you can go and get an energy drink from any of the sponsored teams in there pits! they all have samples... I was going to blast some of those shirts to the crowd before the main too! ....I dont know man......
bmxterry
Me neither, Darin.

It's Tampa And Sarasota for me. sun_bespectacled.gif Got to get my 20" races in. good3.gif

P.S. The tide is turning
DARIN HOUSTON
It seems to me it's the same political bs at every race.
It's not what ya know but who you blow.

NBL should be trying to grow the sport not arrest sponsors.
If the NBL worried about stuff that mattered instead of the bs, things might be better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lets all give a big thank you to DAVE MILLER, who worked hard all weekend, but they eliminated his job????????????????????????????? seems to me that there was plenty of work for Dave to do, since I saw him working hard all weekend. Maybe he was helping Erma, what a great guy.

The NBL is lucky to still have him donating his time.
bmxterry
Ditto.

Dave is one of the good guys.

Thanks for being there, Dave!
winonflats
it really did suck have one of our main sponsors kicked out after they stopped handing out stuff. I really think - the NBL really needs to take a step back and rethink on how they are doing buisness.
CedarBMX
I was not there nor do I have anything against energy drinks and handing out free samples, but maybe someone was concerned about what it was that was being handed out to kids. With all of the things on the market lately, who knows what you are getting. Most of the stuff is high in caffeine, guarana, taurine, etc. Would you have the same reaction if they were handing out free smokeless tobacco samples, or free cigarettes? For the tracks, sometimes it not an easy decision to have someone handing out samples, but you will see energy drink samples being offered at nationals in both sanctions, and some are sponsors for some teams. Maybe we should wait and hear the other side of the story, if there is one.
Ultimately, if they are free samples, you don't have to take them.
winonflats
nope they where not handed out to kids. and its only a shot.
CedarBMX
Maybe a sponsor conflict? What kind of race was this? ( I know it was NBL, but was it a regional or national?) Sorry, I don't really know.
DARIN HOUSTON
the stuff is vitamin b12 thats all the other drinks have alot more garbage in them than that.

the nbl blamed this on bawls but bawls had nothing to do with it at all. its always someone else falt never the nbl
drown1now
Man, I don't know all of this story (admittedly so)...but having an outside of BMX company (Dyna-Pep) come in and throw dollars at a team and at a race...to have them kicked out...well, just speaks to the state of current affairs in the whole NBL vs. ABBA feelings.

Seems to me that this team (Intense/Dyna-Pep) was out front a LOT at the last two nationals I attended (McDonough and Morristown).

Just saying.

And again...Darin, send all posts to me before posting here!

It was a pretty crazy weekend. Alls I have to say is the race was fun until I was approached by the wedding planner about our sponsor (he was an event planner) This guy came up to me telling us that we had to take down all banners and blowups from our sponsor because Bawls is sponsored by the NBL and it is a conflict. The funny thing is that we are sponsored by BAWLS and we were the first team ever to be sponsored by them and they don't have a conflict with Dyna Pep at all. Well the wedding planner told me that Erma told him to tell me not to pass stuff out or have our banners up. I personally went over to Erma in the trailer and she told me that she never said anything and this was the first she has heard about the conflict. 3 weeks earlier I got a media pass for the film crew for Dyna Pep because they were going to shoot a BMX commercial to promote their product and BMX. Unfortunately after all of the drama they cancelled the shoot for Sunday. Most races outside of Florida that we travel to we bring 20 plus riders and their families. In Florida we bring anywhere from 35 to 45 riders to every race. Anyone could do the math and know that we spend alot of money on racing each year. I'm just a little disapointed because everyone says we need to grow the sport but how in the heck are we supposed to grow the sport on just discounts from product sponsors? Teams are getting cash from sponsors to promote their products and that is what we have to do. The good news is that I talked to the head cheese at Dyna Pep and a representative for the SSA and we should be able to shoot the commercial at the Florida State Championship and keep on representing our sponsor with product samples. What stinks is Dyna Pep would have sponsored the NBL but I know now that that idea went down the drain but hopefully they will stay with the SSA in Florida.

Not playing the devils advocate here but maybe this was just a case of not paying vendors fees? Or mabye Bawls has an exclusive agreement to promote there (Crappy) energy drink and the NBL had no choice in the matter? Or it could be that this violates some type of local or state ordinance or health code and the police where just acting on there own. Darrin I can understand where your coming from but its kinda irresponsible to report on something with out knowing the who and why this action was taken and place blame. Leave that to CNN.

Ultimately, regardless of who is responsible, if the majority of the customers are unhappy, then that's a bad recipe for business. I am just curious as to how many times ya'll are going to be bitten by the NBL and then stick your hands back in its mouth? Every year, all of these changes are made, every year, no one is happy. The force is calling you.

As part of the High Springs crew I want to state that this was not our decision. I was not there when Erma spoke to TLACK but her direct comment to me was they had to go. They were issued a media pass (that was to take pictures). Product distribution and blow up displays constitutes a vendor which was not approved. It was explained to me that it was a conflict with their agreement w/Bawls. As track personal we were under contract with the NBL which if we did not follow could affect our payment from them.

On another comment, our "event planner" was nothing more then someone we hired to help us coordinate auxcillery services (trash, parking, vendors, city services, security) and fund raising for our local program. We have a very small but truely dedicated volunteer base that planned (and worked many hours to prepare the track) and carried out the successful event. With his help...we were even able to take some time (not much but some) to enjoy the event and watch our kids race.

I would like to publicly thank the NBL, SSA all the great # of volunteers from Florida and surrounding tracks that made this a great weekend!

free product is not vending in my eyes but maybe i can't see !!!!!!!!!!! I never saw a blow up display anywhere but in our tent, and they are our sponsor....BAWLS is our sponsor as well. the problem was not with the BAWLS people, its the NBL people.

Typical NBL B.S., If a team has a sponsor they should be allowed at the track, no matter what they give away.

But again we are talking about the NBL, Slow death that what this is the ABA is laughing all the way to the bank.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK NBL

I can see the nbl moto count going down !!!!!!!!!!! right down the drain.
If I had a job with the NBL I would be worried your job could be eliminated next!!!!!!!!JUST ASK DAVE.

DARIN HOUSTON
God forbid someone want to come give out free stuff.
The NBL needs to quit worring about getting every penny out of our pocket, weather a vendor or racer it's all about the money.

You can't even protest a race without money. whats up with that? Now I pay to race I pay to make sure they do their job too.Oh and I pay to give stuff away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nbl is a big joke I CAN NOT WAIT TILL ABA HITS THIS STATE AND THEN I WILL HAVE A CHOICE WHERE TO SPEND MY MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!It won't be long change is a coming sooner than you think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif

whats in dyna pep anyway?

anyone know the active ingredients?

just curious what all the hub-bub is about....

Darrin, you and Rowdy can boat with us anyday.

BMXMOM, I belive Darrin said its mostly just B12, not alot of stuff you cant spell or even pronounce!
bmxmom156
yea just looked on the website.. it explain what it does but does not say what is actually in it.

thanks! if it dosnt have caffeine sugar or that guarana stuff// thats what i was looking for.. maybe the bawls ppl didnt like the comp..

but what about a bike company that sponsors a team... that displays frames? are they not allowed to do that if just say another bike co like redline sponsors the event?? now they are not handing out free frames or whatever but in this day and age the more sponsors the better... no banners allowed either?

i remember when some teams used to hand out free powerbars at their pits if someoen came by/ samples no one had a prob w/that...

Our track actually has an insurance sponsor, and in the agreement it says specifically that no other insurance company can have signage or any other sponsorship at the track. That would include a vendor that showed up just for a state/national race. It would NOT include someone that showed up with a lizard on their uniform.

Ultimately it is up to the track (or in the case of a national the sanctioning body) who can post a sign or hand out product. I assure you that if someone attemped to do so at our track without prior permission they would be asked to leave. And that, Captain Spell Check, is how you run a business.

Note: All of the above is based solely on the info in this thread, so there may be lots of extenuating circumstances that would change my response, but slamming someone for protecting their business is typically unjustified.
bmx668
BMXmom 156 has a point. My team will be at St.Cloud next weekend and I'll have my sponsors EZ-up. Should I spray paint across the sponsors name or just rip the EZ-up down. God knows I don't want to be arrested for displaying my sponsors logo. Maybe I'll pack up my 15 riders and all their entry fees and attend a different race somewhere on the westcoast. The NBL apparently must have enough money coming from their sponsored bike manufacturer so they won't miss my money.

I'm not sure why I care about this at all, but what the heck. I'm obviously so brilliant that my opinion must be heard! (Yes, I'm kidding, please feel free to smile!).

My thoughts on the EZ-up vs BMXmom are that the two are separate. Having a tent with a name on it is no different than if it said Dallas Cowboys or Coca-Cola. Actually displaying products (like with the frame sponsor) is engaging in specific product promotion and can rightly be regulated by the event sponsor. If Company A pays $1,000 to display product, and Company B does it without paying, then Company A will not pay in the future. If the venue is valuable enough for a company to want a display, then the promoter can rightly expect compensation as the "creator" of the valuable location.

Ha ha..keep messing with the Florida boys..

"vendor fees"

"its all abotu the kids" hahaha
bmxmom156
well i think theres a difference betw vending and "displaying". some frame companies arent actually selling product, showing it under a tent is more like it( simply putting it)

i remember at the grands a few yrs ago there was an area ( not vendors row) that we had to take the frames down since our sponsor didnt pay a vending fee.(we were not selling/vending) this went for the tire co mpany next to us as well... they were not selling tires just displaying them. if you want to go to dans or j and r and buy them thats the customers choice. they were not for sale under the tent. i really dont see anything wrong w/that...

i was thinking of all the races where ppl had give aways... when we were at az they gave out the celly smelly wipes... dont know if they are nbl sponsors or not... at the grands they have tshirt tosses, does anyone else remember give aways?? i know bizzaro used to give the energy bars away bitd....

when my son was small the nationals were a place to walk around and get all sorts of free "stuff"... the kids didnt care as long as they got stuff... like a big goodie bag.....stickers were a biggy, deoderant( remember the bags of right guard?), k chains, occasional tshirts, visors, all sorts of goodies...etc...

didnt seem like they were so paranoid back then..

OR NOT!

What a contract does is to limit opportunities. See economic impact: If single sponsor with lock out clause is enough revenue VS new participants, marginal buyer at 10-1 leverage, the sponsor dollars translate into over all economic impact greater then new participant, take it...but you need to justify it/share or you'll have dissent. The numbers become huge very quick.

BMX teams work on shoe string budgets and the love of team owners..So from the data I have seen quick back of the envelope, sponsor dollars with team workouts go to the 15-1 range. Of course that comes from elbow grease or out of pocket funding..

There fore the "outrage" at giving free garb away with the justification of anti profiteering laws are laughable here.

Some team owners have been known to NOT require all team members run co sponsor parts to earn a better team deal. They had to renegotiate the contract for a different deal. The result of those requirement/mandates are lower ranked team members subsidized the top riders. That is eco system of business and there is nothing wrong with that. However after quick calculations it became obvious Gresham's law would take over and team size would be limited. A big team is more fun....so are big locals and big races.. Get the Joke. All mandates lower participation and increase costs.

The Houston's really love the team and will do anything for any of us. Even though some might take whatever they say in the wrong manner we personally love the support. They are very passionate about BMX and want it to excell in every manner. Unfortunately, it was my fault for not checking in on all basis and assumed that they would be cool about it because we have been giving out samples at the Florida State races. Oh well we live and we learn but we will still give out some samples for those who would like to become friends with us and visit our tent. laugh.gif
