Full Version: I'm curious how much my Hawk XXL is worth!

Hey everyone, new here but i've been on multiple BMX message boards for quite some time. I was hoping someone could help me out, I'm trying to sell my old race bike after not using it for 6ish years. It's a hawk XXL that I bought 2 months before they went under. Frame was ridden a handful of times, and the parts weren't abused either. If anyone can give me a little insight on what I could/should get for the bike, it'd be appreciated!

i work in a shop and we tell people about half of what ya paid

Well, for one, I would love to have it. But I hear they had some problems. Like creaking. the cranks can be sold for $250 to $300. The frame for probably 3 - $400. Given the collectible wave of things and the relative rarity of Hawks, mixed with the coming economic collapse, minus the color, I think $750 or $800 if you had patience. It's a cool bike, but you have to consider what others are selling for before you chose a price.

You should be able to retire early and travel extensively.

This would be better in the mid school section

Welcome lippy,

As a "newbie", you may want to read the Terms and Conditions of Vintage. It is kind of a "no-no" to ask what a bike is worth. I am letting you know because you might get messed with a bit just for asking.

From the Terms and Conditions...

- What is my ____ worth?

The true value of vintage bicycles and components can be difficult to determine. Unlike other "collectibles", there isn't a BMX pricing guide. A fair price is one that will make you happy when you buy or sell something. If you are happy with a price, then that price determines the value of your item.

Bottom line: It's worth whatever you can buy it for or get someone to pay for it. VintageBMX.com is a resource for BMXers. It is not intended to be, nor should it be used as a pricing guide.

If you're not sure what that price should be, consider an auction. If you don't want to sell it because it's really worth more than money to you, we understand completely. We're more interested in the attachment to BMX, and the value of that is beyond money.

having not read the above (Terms and Conditions of Vintage rule.) in the past, now i have.. I being a long time shop guy, bmx lover, and a ebay seller, would think its worth half of you paid, maybe more or less depending on the market right now, times are tough and not everyone is willing to pay a ton for collectible stuff right now.

not sure where you are getting your prices but... last week a hawk sold on the bay without the 990 mounts for $152, the mounts went for $66, I was in on the game but it was to much money, then two days ago a hawk frame with 990 mounts went for $110 on museum, these are great frames wish I had one but they are not that expensive when they come up

Funny how items have become the most sought after Bmx items between most site members/collectors because they have sold for high dollar value (IE money) based on past Ebay auctions .. it's become collector staus rather than doing it all for "the love of Bmx". You see it time and again, a top Pro gets on the forum boards and most people just want to know is what valuable parts he still has in his old gear and is it for sale, they're not to concerned about the Bmx accomplishments.

In the Trash Talk section '81 Skyway Graphites sold for big money by an accomplished Schwinn Factory Pro and the item was not received from the buyer.. and the buyer refers to him as Mike "Paulson".

despite not reading any of the rules before placing this post, I feel for you, I to have sat long and hard looking at some piece of history I had and wondered what it was reallllly worth. I know what I paid for it, and how long Ive kept it, cleaned it and stored it, but how much is it worth when it comes time to set a price.

I almost feel like we should have price list section (open only to paid members of which I am not yet) where you could post stuff, and get peoples opinions, and post item pics/specs/final price. I know for one how price setting can be a labourious process, and most of the time, I end up having to do alot of googling, and searching for sales of exact models, or similar items, and past sales anywhere I can find them, and then try to set a reasonable price + shipping.

Even shipping prices are hard to set, becuase who knows where buddie lives, Ive sent stuff to South Africa, and recieved stuff from as far as Asia, and traded stuff with a guy in Germany. Mailing something halfway around the planet rasise alot of questions like, do you concider everything you use as cost? like if I buy chrome polish spray/chrome protectant to spray a frame down before I send it, do I count that as well? Or just add half the cost? Zip ties, bubble wrap, packing tape, cardboard, and so and so on.

blahhh, if it werent for the smile that crosses my face when I see a package in my mailmans hands, or that feeling of cruising up to school with my daugher and watching all the kids jaws drop as we ride up, Id have run screaming off into the forest years ago.

not my daughter, just a nice pic...you get the idea..;-)

here she is, pirate bmxer look with her new 24"..

PS: another brainstorm I had was what about sorting all the sale posts by part as well, and have atuto-bump for paid members posts?

Post this up in the Mid-school section. BTW, those Nuke Proof hubs are worth at least $500 on the market.

I don't think that would happen mykesbykes. Giving out this price knowledge doesn't sit well on a Bmx collector site which is what most vintage bmx sites have evolved into...If a newbie was told what his unknown items monetary value was really worth based on the Bmx market which is mainly Ebay, then all the collectors would have to pay that amount for it with "money"...so the previous QUOTE : "We're more interested in the attachment to BMX, and the value of that is beyond money" is a great way of skirting the value question when it arises from a newbie..Works way better than the "go find out yourself newbie because we don't want to drive up the price on a valuable item that collectors might be able to grab on the cheap from this dude or any others that might have something valuable they don't know about that could possibly be bought for cheap"...and that was a mouthful.
mykesbykes
I agree with you and the policy, my hope was something like an impersonal, unbaised, averaged, spreadsheet type listing, so you could type in handlebars, redline, chrome, and you'd pull up all the sales of that type of bar, with a pic hopefully, and specs, a member generated price guide maybe?
but with that said, Im perfectly happy with the board as is...;-)

Very cool bike.

This is the best answer, ask what you're willing to take for it.

Values on this stuff bounces all over the place depending on the amount of the specific item in circulation at the time of your sale.

Lippy unless you need the money I would hold onto it might be worth more years from now like the Hutchs ya never know.
GT_Pro_Performer
It's all about market trends....weather...the economy....etc. What it sold for 3 months ago could be 1/3 or 3 times what it sells for now. Hard to say.

I hate to say it....but Ebay is usually the best benchmark for pricing.

Don;t know what to tell you on value. I still race my xl at locals. As for creaking? Lube all components on assembly. I have had people ride my 20 and 24 and tell me they were very smooth and quite. Still have a new xl pol. 20 in the box. You must be tall those xxl frames had to be one of the longest frames ever built. My xl is as large as a lot of other xxl frames. Just slide rear wayyyy up in the drop out.

There are always many posts asking for the current value of the old BMX bike or part you have found, or are trying to purchase, etc.

The simple answer is we don't know.

As with anything, particularly anything old, it's value is judged by what someone will pay for it today. What one person will pay, is not necessarily what another person will pay. A simple rule of thumb is the value of your item is what you would pay for it.

Search ebay, or here on the for sale forum and you might gather a general idea as to the value of the item you possess. These values change daily, and are unique to each individual based what holds the most sentimental value to that particular person.

All it takes are two individuals going after the same item on the same day to drive the value of any particular item through the roof.

There is no Kelly Blue Book for BMX.

..............Doe's "ugly" fetch more money at auction..?..Cuz if it does, that bike should bring in thousands.....Ugly frame, with even 'uglier' cranks.....If it 'creaks' as well-I would drop it off at the first Police auction holding area..!
