- What are the rules behind avatars and signatures?
An "avatar" is the little picture representation that goes under your name. It is supposed to be a picture of you, so other members can put a "face with the name," however it is accepted practice to use an image which reflects you, or your personal style in some way (team logo, favorite rockstar, yoda, etc). Avatars may not be animated, and must not, in any way, be offensive to other members. VintageBMX is a community. As such, all members must make an effort to get along with each other, and make this an enjoyable place for all.
A "signature" is the area under each one of your posts. It is generally used to sign off your posts a certain way each time, by adding your name, or a famous quotation you hold near and dear. It may not contain images of any kind. It may contain a link, but only to your personal blog, team or track site (IMPORTANT! It may not contain a link to a commercial web site, forum site, online community, product site, or other such site).
Because of the fact that every post you make contains both your avatar and your signature, it directly affects the user experience of this site. As such we will exercise greater control over these items than we might over the personal photo attached to your profile (which still must meet certain acceptability guidelines, but are not as stringent as the aforementioned).
If we see a signature or avatar which violates these guidelines, we will take it down without notice. If your signature or avatar has suddenly changed, it has been removed by the administrator. This means you should not replace it with the same thing that was taken down. The administrators will not engage in "battles" with users over avatars and signature lines. If you continually post inappropriate material, your account will be suspended and/or banned from access. if you have a question as to whether an avatar or signature line is acceptable, please send it to a moderator in advance of posting it for direction.
These guidelines are effective immediately.

I just saw this. So I got rid of my signature, it was a bit overwhelming. I hope my avatar is still okay.

Yup, all good. Sig would have been ok (on a "grandfathered" basis) if it had been half as tall.

Some people may not know that my avatar is actually video of me that's been digitized.
I was getting ready for church one Sunday morning and I asked my wife to videotape me freestyling with my sweater vest on. She did, and well, the rest is history thanks for some really clever photoshop help from my buddy Steve.
Just kiddin!
My avatar is like a t-shirt tuxedo, it says......"I'm all business, but I also like to party".

Mike, I'm digging the VBMX captions under certain user's names. Very cool - I feel all important and what not now...
PS I'll amend my avatar tonite or tomorrow.

Thanks. I decided to change Vet Pro (at 3500 posts) to Hall Of Famer, cause I thought it better depicted the importance of those who post, post, post!
Why would you amend your avatar? Although I did like your old one better (was it your baby picture?).

Yeah, the old av was me at 4 or 5. I changed it because...oh nevermind why I changed it. Idi Amin just isn't "me" anymore.

I'm pretty sure the sig would be fine here, but my title probably wouldn't fly. LOL! I've thought of using that avatar many times but I'm pretty sure one of the mods would ban me over it.

Just got around to reading this thread. Say it ain't so! You gotta make an exception for me around October. The Oktoberfest girl groupies will be very disappointed.

I'm sure an accommodation can be reached vis a vis the Oktoberfest girl (though having never seen it, I cannot make any promises).

forum site, online community
I can understand the no-links-to-commercial-sites rule, because of advertiser commitments. But why prohibit links to other discussion sites? It's like the old days when all the BMX magazines had an editorial policy of pretending that there weren't any other BMX magazines.
(And by the way, this is purely an intellectual curiosity question. Personally, I think signatures should be removed entirely. Reading sigs repeatedly [especially in the same thread!] is like driving 100 miles behind a car that has a witty bumper sticker. Funny for that first mile, but the rest of the trip, not so much.)

We made some changes to our hosting that took effect sometime today. It is starting to propagate, and should be resolved in full by the morning. Meanwhile, you may have some unexpected results...and at times, may see a "park" page instead of the main page. Keep trying. On my iPhone, I have no problem...but ony home computer, I am not able to get on at all at present.
Sorry for any inconvenience!
