Full Version: Custom made bars or modified Musclebike bars?

When I first got these bars I thought they were an old pair of Muscle bike bars that someone had welded a cross bar and gussets on after installing a Webco stem, but after I stripped them I realized that they were not chrome under the paint nor do they look like they were factory painted. After looking even closer I think they might have been custom made. The gussets were definitely brazed in by an amateur, but the main portion and the cross bar appear to have been welded by a professional welder or at least someone that knew what they were doing. They were not factory made for a single stem, there is a sleeve welded on the bottom to accommodate a single stem and from the looks of it that same person welded the cross bar in them after the Webco stem was mounted in place. One other thing that makes me think they were custom made is the tubing stripped clean and looks like Chrome Moly, it’s hard to tell in the photos but I don’t think they are mild steal.

My question is what kind of person or who would have had a custom pair of bars made back in 75? Box bars were out by 75 so you would have had to be into BMX pretty heavy at that time in order to have a pair of bars made. They are wider and taller than any factory BMX bars at that time, 25” wide and 10” rise. They did come from the west coast so it is possible but??????

I don't know what they are but they are very cool. I'd throw them on a stingray or a monoshock and run with it. I like 'em.

I'm thinking they weren't modified so much for extra strength Ken... Possibly more for the "extra lift" they could provide for jumping. Like a Wing Suit!

I totally agree. I love these bars; I have since painted them and they are on my 74 Squareback. I just wish I knew the story on how they came about. There was quite a bit of experimental stuff going on with BMX back in the mid 70’s especially on the west coast, I would like to see more of the experimental stuff.

Those guys are insane!

I don’t think you will get much air with my Squareback, this thing is a tank.

I will try and get some photos and post them later in the week. I’m not real happy with my choice of wheels though, it looks a little boring. It’s also very heavy, it almost weighs as much as one of my Krates.
