I have a question that just came up with a build I am doing and just want some opions. I have been looking for a set of chrome Landing Gear Unstamped forks for awhile now. I have a Babyblue PK and it has a White LG on it now and I want to change the look to a race bike not the 1/2 race 1/2 freestyle look it has now. This is the question part: I just bought a set of NOS in the Orginal Box Chrome Unstamped Landing Gear and I mean NOS! They are so nice I don't want to use them! I did buy them for this but now after seeing them it's hard. It's not like there are 1000's of them outthere in the orginal box in mint condition so What would you do? Put Them away and look for another set ,Use them and take one more set off the NOS list? It's not a matter of cost for another set it's do I put them on the shelf for another 25+ years unused?

Yeah it's a show bike and I will never ride it but it's not a NOS frame it's been repowdered so it's a hard call and if I had a NOS Frame I would not build it. That makes me rethink useing this set of NOS forks.
mr coasterbrake
i can't help you with your decision, but...

i will say that i've bought plenty of NOS items with the intention of using them on specific builds - only to not be able to bring myself to use them.

Use them thats what they were made for. I buy parts used or in the bag/box and use them on whatever I have.

Just my 2 pennies Rob

Mark, you seem to be very attuned to the fact that they are NOS. Based on the opinion you have of the forks, I believe you would regret using them. For someone who had a more "don't care either way" attitude, I would say use them. It's different for everyone.

It's funny because in the last 5 years I have come acoss alot of NOS parts and it never bothered me to use them. I have taken brand new SE bars, Posts and yes some forks and used them on my many SE Builds but it was just something about opening a SE box with a set on pristine forks that have never had a nut near them (til me). It was like a time warp back too 83 and now I feel like that they should just be a collection piece. I know for some it's just a fork but some see it more as history and as MR.CB said it's only NOS once!

I have to say Build and Ride!! Thats what they were meant for.I know some feel otherwise but I have a different view on life after the past few years. My Brother died from a stroke at 39 and and a few friends have died in car accidents and other mishaps. You only live once! Bikes don't go with you.If you found out tomorrow that you have one more day to live, did Looking at these parts give you Satisfaction? Or memories of riding and thrasing? jmo

I had the same dilemma with a pair of Redline forks. I couldn't use them so I sold them to someone else. He had no problem using them.
waza007
use them on a show bike, only if you intend to use them "as they are"
If you intend to repowder/replate them, then go find a set that needs restoration

A year or so ago I bought a Judge blue, in the bag, nos Aerospeed disc. I was going to put it on my metal flake blue Judge with Aerospeeds. It is still in the bag and I am still using the chrome disc even though the blue one would be so much cooler. There is something hard about taking the staples off the bag and pulling it out... Now if I ever came across a second one, then my choice would be a lot easier.

I know I can't bring myself to rip open that nos package....show build or not.

Apollo, about 3 years ago I was looking for a set of Stamped LG and came across 2 nos sets A set of chrome and a set of black. I used both sets not thinking a second about it. It's ironic I sold both bikes they went on to Brian Hays the 84 Quad got sold to someone else but the 88 PK I told him if he was to sell it let me get first chance to get it back and I did. I now look back and wish I keep both unused and just found a set and restored. They do look Killer on the Polished PK but they are no longer NOS. They where from late 80's some of the parts we find and use are from the 70's and that stuff is getting hard to find in any condition let alone NOS and by NOS I mean New OLD Stock not Like New Only installed on a show bike nos. If that was the case this set of forks would already be on my PK. I do know people that take a 84 F&F out of the box build it and even ride it and that's really cool but that just leaves one less outthere. As for going out and ripping on a old school ride That's Cool but can't we use the stuff that has some life left in them and leave some stuff as NOS.

I believe someone here has a signature that reads something like.... it's only original once.
npsarider
if it was me i would use them ,but why dont you just have your white forks chromed nd save the nos fork . but whats the point of having nos stuff if you dont use it . put them on a build and show it off . my buddy only buys nos stuff and it just sits in a closet its just a waist to keep them like that .

I had a similar problem with a set of NOS Reedy pedals. I took 'em out of the box and was immediately unable to imagine riding them, so I sold 'em. Now I wish I hadn't. But whatever. Like 76 Mongese said. It's totally up to the individual. The old me couldn't do it, but the current me definitely can!

NO Brian, I did see your post on the vertical stamped forks but I don't have any as of now. I am looking for a 85 PK with vertical stamped forks. I will let you know if I find any.
Apollo
Used frames and parts I will ride all day long.
