Does anyone remember seeing a kid with a freewheel for the first time? or buying the kit for coasterbrake?

On a BMX bike, around 72-73 but mostly on rat BMX bikes, then it became popular when people like Skibel Sr, Tom Derosier and Steve Rink started using them on little kids bikes and then it spread to the older guys

My first freewheel was a converted coaster Motomag.

I remember the three things I absolutely had to have on my first real bmx bike was a diamond frame, tubular forks, and a freewheel. I'd hear a kid roll by with his freewheel clicking and my heart would skip a beat. I was so stoked when I finally got my DG I swear I pedalled backwards twice as much as I pedalled forward.

You made me lol about pedaling backwards. I remember 2 older guys from the area who had real freewheels. I got the kit for my coaster brake kmart bike with yellow mags. Man I thought i was cool.

I went to my first race at the old Flemington track in N.J. back in 1979, and I saw all these kids with freewheels and alloy wheels. I had Tuffs and a coaster brake on my Rampar, and I felt so out of place.
I also noticed how bad it sucked to use a coaster brake and get back up to speed.
I was so stoked when I discovered the JB freewheel adaptor thing. It never quite worked 100% right lol, but it was a freewheel good2.gif

My neighbor had a blue & chrome Race Inc. if i remebmer right, it was around '82-84 & everyone thought it was the coolest ride. Looking back now, it probably was. That and the used Proline i got a few years later.

After my first race on a real track around 1982. Got a kit to convert my red Tuff IIs. It didn't make me any faster but, I just "knew" I could run with the big boys.

Did you put it in your self? I remeber doing it and thinking there is no way this will work , but it did.

First freewheel, the coolest thing that could ever happen to a bmx bike bitd. I wanted that freewheel so bad, and the first lap after getting a new back wheel with freewheel, I smacked the finish line double hard enough to bend the back wheel up against the frame. No amount of stomping and boulder smashing could get it back in shape...ha..so the second freewheel was an even cooler experience.

First one I saw was the cassette type on a pair of Tuffs. It was my brother's Redline.

Nah, My LBS did it. Gave me a little baggie of leftovers.
