Full Version: Rare Simi Motomags

It's no mystery that the handful of Magnesium Motomags Skip Hess gave to Rick's Bike Shop Team are the most rare of all Motomags.

With the expert Mongoose and Motomag knowledge of RCain and some other research I've looked into, it seems that the 2nd version of Simi Motomag 1's could be the most rare of all Motomags ever sold to the public.

The reason being is that Skip Hess was granted his Patent close to the end of the first "Simi run" and the molds were changed to reflect this new Patent number. Very shortly afterwards the Molds were changed again to reference the new Company headquarters being moved to Chatsworth. So very few Simi Motomags were produced with the Patent number.

I recently purchased a pair of Simi Motomags with the Patent number and they are the only ones I've seen. They are in very good condition but hard as I try, I cannot make out the Patent number...

So far, all I have is: "BMX PROD. SIMI CALF." and "MOTOMAG PAT. NO. 236?09" (I'm not 100% sure the other numbers I'm reading are accurate).

If anyone has a set of these and can make out the number, I would appreciate it. Also, maybe someone could read the numbers better than me just from these pics:

Second question... I also recently grabbed this very cool looking Mongoose saddle with a Redline seat post. I've never seen one of these or this set up so I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

The seat is stamped "Kevlar" and "Mongoose" and has a suede sort of brushed finish:

Oops... Wow, do I feel dumb!!! sad.gif

I just realized it's the same Patent Number for all Motomags : 236609 !!!

Never mind that mystery... blink.gif

Still can't find out anything on the seat though... Anyone?

Pete,

That Seat is late 1990s vintage.

Thanks Ken. I figured it was quite new school when I saw it.

What I was wondering was if it was something that was used for a racing bike or whatever. The tube is 7/8" and fits the older frames. It actually came on a very sweet Nickel Supergoose which seemed sort of strange... It's really nice though! Not 70's or anything for sure, but goes really well with a hybrid build containing older and newer components...

Anyone know what street those were made on? Being that I live in Simi and this is a pretty small place, it would be cool to know where all this Mongoose stuff started from.

Dave, Skip's original home office was on Greenleaf Court in Simi. Then it moved to Chatsworth on Lassen St.

The Motomags were always made at Cragar not at Skip's place. Check out Warren's site for more information on that: smile.gif
